Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme NoteWind-Drumming was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble.The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations; the mystic exotic impact of Latin-American drumming and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute).The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth ofrainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living a lament on the damage done to the tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders

Score-Silvestre Revueltas' ‘Sensemaya’ was written in 1937 for chamber orchestra; one year later the composer transcribed it for a huge orchestra of twenty-seven wind instruments fourteen percussion instruments and strings. The rhythms are laid out precisely and have considerable visceral impact very much in a manner that recalls Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. However Revueltas' masterful orchestration and ability to evoke the ancient Maya civilization with decidedly modern music are uniquely his own. It is a unique orchestral spectacle something only Revueltas could have written and in its way it is one of the most brutal works of its time. The workbegins with a low note in the bassoon as the percussion plays the sinuous syncopated rhythm that drives the work. Soon a solo horn enters playing the first of this work's two major themes a muscular ominous motif. Other horns join the first one to play the theme growing louder and more emphatic but rigorously yoked to the underlying rhythm. Eventually the horns blast as loudly as they can with obsessive trills on the bassoon far underneath and the violins enter with the slashing second theme. The horns take up this new theme and bring it to a climax after which the music returns to its opening texture. This recapitulation brings with it a mood of foreboding. The rhythm becomes even more obsessive and finally the music reaches a massive climax during which both themes are played overlapping sometimes in part and sometimes in whole by woodwinds brass and violins in what sounds like a musical riot. The coda feels like the final dropping of a knife.

Malcolm Arnold's one act ballet score Homage To The Queen was commissioned in 1953 by the Royal Opera House Covent Garden to celebrate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The ballet was conceived and choreographed by Frederick Ashton with designs by Oliver Messel and was danced by the full company of the Sadler's Wells Ballet with an illustrious cast that comprised Nadia Nerina as Queen of the Earth Violetta Elvin as Queen of the Waters Beryl Grey as Queen of Fire and Margot Fonteyn as Queen of the Air. The conductor of the ROH orchestra was Robert Irving. Homage to the Queen was first performed on the night of the coronation 2June1953.One of the towering musical figures of the 20th century Sir Malcolm Arnold has a remarkable catalogue of major concert works to his credit including nine symphonies seven ballets two operas one musical over twenty concertos two string quartets and music for brass band and wind band. He has also written over 132 film scores and among these are some of the finest works ever composed for the medium: Bridge On The River Kwai Inn Of The Sixth Happiness Hobson's Choice Whistle Down The Wind and David Copperfield.

Musicians Wrestle Everywhereis a concerto scored for ten instruments Flute Oboe Clarinet Bass Clarinet Horn Trombone Percussion Piano Cello and Bass. The piece is a continuous thirteen minute movement withinfluence coming from the composer's experiences whilst walking around South-East London in an urban street environment. Sounds that influenced the piece include wind turbulence rain showers birds wind chimes and trafficnoise. Work commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group first performance was given at the Adrian Boult Hall Birmingham on 5 March 1995.

Genesys Fanfare was written for and performed by the members of the Brass and Percussion sections of the Flint Symphony Orchestra. Later the work was rescored for full orchestra and ultimately for concert band in this present arrangement. This band version was first performed in 2016 by the combined Wind Ensembles of Texas Lutheran University conducted by Beth Bronk. The musical ideas for this fanfare are straightforward - the theme is a rhythmic representation of the name of the institution that commissioned the piece - Genesys Hospital. The asymmetrical repetition of the spoken rhythm however yields a refreshingly compelling pulse which drives the music all the waythrough.

Born in Havana Cuba in 1895 Ernesto Lecuona is arguably Cuba's greatest serious composer. He was a gifted pianist who wrote hundreds of songs and piano works before he died in 1963. Most of his music is composed in a rich authentic Cuban style. The most famous of his works is Malagueña the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia for solo piano which was first published in 1928. Malagueña has been recorded as a popular song (with added lyrics) as a serious piano work (even by Lecuona himself in the 1950's) and also as a jazz standard (Bill Holman's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the early 1960's.) Over the years it has been arranged many times for variousother mediums ranging from symphony orchestra to field arrangements for drum and bugle corps.In 1976 James Barnes arranged Malagueña for the University of Kansas Marching Band. A few years later with permission from the publisher he expanded this original arrangement into a full work for symphonic band called Prelude Fantasy and Fandango on Lecuona's Malagueña. After several performances in the spring of 1978 (most notably at the MENC Convention in Colorado Springs) this work along with over 200 other Barnes manuscripts lay fallow in the KU Band Library. While packing up his office belongings when he retired from The University of Kansas in 2015 Barnes came across this long languishing Prelude Fantasy and Fandango which remained in condensed score. In the fall of 2016 he completely re-composed the opening portion of the work reduced the number of required percussion and disposed of the two harps in his 1978 version. This new setting features evocative thinly scored extended solo passages for clarinet bassoon and flute before the full wind band concludes the work with a powerful dramatic setting of the main themes of Lecuona's masterful Malagueña.

Music from the last movement of the Ninth Symphony. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. The European Hymn is the hymn not only of the European Union but of Europe in a broader sense. The melody has been taken from the Ninth Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1823. In the last movement of this symphony Beethoven set music to the 'Ode to Joy' by Friedrich von Schiller from 1785. This poem sprang from Schiller's idealistic vision of men who become brothers – a vision Beethoven shared with him. In 1972 the Council of Europe adopted Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' as its anthem. The well-known conductor Herbert von Karajan was commissioned to arrange three instrumental versions – for solo piano, wind orchestra and symphony orchestra. Without words, in the universal language of music, the anthem is an expression of the idealistic values of freedom, peace and solidarity which Europe stands for. In 1985 the heads of state and government adopted the hymn as the EU's official anthem. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states, but rather celebrates common values as well as unity in diversity. from Symphony No. 1 - The Lord of the Rings. Johan de Meij?s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. This transcription for brass band, arranged by the composer has the following movements: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria and The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm), V. HOBBITS. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
