Thanks to its skilful combination of Romantic melody and sparkling virtuosity, Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto op. 3 has been one of the most popular works of its genre since its Moscow premiere in 1905. No wonder, for the virtuoso double bass player Koussevitzky had composed it for his very own instrument. As early as 1906/07 a first piano reduction was published in Moscow, followed by a second in 1910 in Leipzig. However, both contain so many mistakes in the solo part that there is still uncertainty about the correct musical text in many passages to this day. The double bass player Tobias Glöckler has therefore prepared his Urtext edition using several sources: as well as the manuscript performance material and the piano reductions published during the composer's lifetime, he has also studied recordings with Koussevitzky as soloist - thereby finally producing a thoroughly-researchedUrtext edition of the orchestral score and piano reduction of this classic of the double bass literature. As with all double bass concertos published by Henle Publishers, this edition also contains the piano reduction by Christoph Sobanski in two keys (E minor and F sharp minor) for performance with solo or orchestral tuning.

Carl Vine's Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Vine describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent piano trio The Village) evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related, but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible, creating a series of fleeting glimpses---what Prokofiev called visions fugitives---abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.

Julian Anderson's new Violin Concerto - his first ever concerto - extends the conventional exploration of relationships to the spacial. Beginning off stage, the soloist's physical location changes throughout the work, altering the dynamic between soloist, orchestra, and conductor. The work was written especially for Carolin Widmann.

This newrevised edition of the composer’s2010 concert version represents the first appearance of the work in print in any form. Lord intended it for his own use in live performance, as a companion to his celebrated Concerto for Groupand Orchestra. It is a brilliant showpiece for thecombined forces of rock band and orchestra, taking inspiration from the keyboard suites of J.S. Bach. This new full score is edited by Jon Lord’s long-time musicalcollaborator, the conductor Paul Mann, and makes use of many previously unavailablesources including the manuscriptscores of the original version and a copy of the score corrected in consultation with the composer following the2010 premiere. It can therefore be said to represent as closely as possible Jon Lord’s final thoughts onthe work. Hardcover full score. Text in Polish, German, and English. This edition of the works of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz is based on critically examined sources. It includes all his compositions. The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.

Hartke's cello concerto, Da Pacem, takes its title from a Latin hymn that begins “Grant peace in our day.” It is a reflection on these unsettled and unsettling times. As the work's protagonist, the solo cellist journeys through a considerable variety of musical landscapes. Movements: I. Da Pacem (Fantasia) II. In diebus nostris (Scherzo) III. Quis pugnat pro nobis? (Introduction, Elegy, and Envoi) Commissioned by Oberlin College and Conservatory; the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; the Aspen Music Festival, Robert Spano, Music Director; and American Composers Orchestra.

My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilege (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. The two-movement form of the Concerto for Orchestra derives from a symphonic sonata structure, reshaping the traditional four-movement form and combining this with aspects of sonata form, a tradition that goes back to Liszt, Schoenberg and Sibelius:1st movement (i) exposition of ideas - dramatic and sudden (ii) scherzo and development 1 - resolute2nd movement (iii) adagio - calm and unhurried (iv) development 2 with recapitulation - intense and energeticThe Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim with the support of Die Landesbank Baden-Wurttemberg for its first two performances on 31st March and 1st April 2008 conducted by Friedemann Layer. Some of the most exuberant music from the Baroque period comes to us from George Frideric Handel, composer of Messiah, among many other masterpieces. Handel's Allegro from Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1, arranged by Deborah Baker Monday, is a perfect example of his most joyous music and is an excellent choice for concert or festival. The four-measure melodic theme in G major occurs throughout the piece and is passed among all instruments. A half step figure is also a common motive with easily accessible fingerings provided. This piece features simple quarter and eighth-note rhythms. The accompanying parts are interrelated, and rhythmic independence is limited. (2:00) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1858 and performed the work's debut in Hanover, Germany, in 1859, to mixed reviews. The work initially began as a sonata for two pianos, then a four-movement symphony. Under the counsel of friends Julius Otto Grimm and violinist Joseph Joachim, Brahms landed on a three-movement piano concerto. After its fifth performance in December 1861, with Clara Schumann as piano soloist, the work still received mixed audience reception. It has since grown in popularity and has been recognized as a masterpiece. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Piano.
