This suite has been taken from the music of the Christmas tale of the same name. The instrumentation can be easily realized with four woodwind instruments, two brass instruments, timpani and strings. The 'Tanz der Holzpuppen', a foxtrot, is suitable as encore showing the humorous musician Hindemith who, in 1920, wrote to the Schott publishing house with a wink: 'Can you also make use of foxtrots, Bos-tons, rags and other kitsch? Whenever I cannot think of decent music, I write such stuff.'.

Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90-92 might rightly be dubbed his “Paris Symphonies Part II,†as they were commissioned in 1788/89, likewise by the Société Olympique, for which Haydn had already composed his six “Paris Symphonies†nos. 82-87 just a few years earlier. Ironically enough, Haydn would later sell these three a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein who requested he “receive 3 new symphonies from him.†Regardless of such mercantile entanglements, Haydn shows himself to be at the full height of his mastery as a symphonist in these works. Completed in 1788 according to the autograph manuscript, the Symphony in E flat major no. 91 astonishes, even for Haydn’s standards, with its many idiosyncrasies, such as the Baroque, contrapuntal theme of the first movement or the strings of trills in the slow variation movement. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy scorean ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Haydn arrived in London at the beginning of February 1794 for his second stay in England. Two movements of the Symphony in G major Hob. I:100 had already been completed by then, and the finished work was premiered on 31 March. The trumpet fanfare in the second movement and the use of “janissary†percussion gave the symphony its nickname “Military Symphony,†which Haydn himself even used. Its success in London was enormous; in 1794/95 alone, the work was performed nine times and thus quickly became one of the most popular Haydn symphonies of all time. To everyone wishing to become more acquainted with this symphony, let this inexpensive study edition be commended - with reliable commentaries on its genesis, sources, and edition as well as an unassailable musical text taken from the Haydn Complete Edition.

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic ouvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Probably composed in the winter of 1791/92, the Symphony in D major no. 93 was, with its easily accessible (butby no means simple!) musical structure, perfectly tailored to London tastes, which demanded melodic clarity and expressive pathos. The Baroque echoes of Handel in the slow introduction to the first movement and in the festive mood of the finale with its timpani and trumpets would have been well received - no wonder the symphony had to be repeated multiple times in the same season after its performance in 1792! This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. The E-flat-major Symphony no. 103 was composed in 1795 as the penultimate of the London Symphonies. It owes its epithet to its unique beginning; a solo drumroll in the timpani ushers in the slow introduction. This opening bar, marked with Haydn's heading “Intrada†and a pause, even inspires many a performer to venture a short timpani improvisation. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. The energetic, surging B-flat-major Symphony no. 102 belongs to the group of the last three symphonies premiered in early 1795. Exceptionally, Haydn here dispenses with the clarinets that are otherwise generally featured in his late symphonies. The instrumentation of the Adagio is also unusual, in that Haydn includes trumpets and timpani, both muted. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. To this day, the G-major symphony, first performed in March 1792, numbers among Haydn's most popular works. It owes its English nickname “Surprise†to the striking tutti chords in the Andante, which apparently caught the audience off guard. Haydn had consciously incorporated this effect at a later stage - and was thus subsequently also perfectly willing to authorize this nickname that had been dreamt up by a London musician. This popular work also spread rapidly through German-speaking countries, where it is still firmly established in the repertoire as the “symphony with the drumbeat.†This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. * 1 * 1 * 1 - 1 * 1 * 1 * 0 - P. Tchaikovsky spent the summer and autumn of 1880 at his sister's country estate in Kam'ianka, Ukraine, where he sought peace and relaxation. But after a short time the desire to work took hold of him again. âI'm sketching a symphony or string quintet just now; I don't know where it's going yet,â he wrote to his friend and patroness Nadezhda von Meck. In the end it turned out to be a Serenade for String Orchestra, which numbers among his most beautiful inspirations and is today a central work in the genre. The four movements captivate with their diverse moods â be it the Mozartian first movement âin the form of a sonatinaâ, the elegant Waltz, the melancholy âElegiaâ or the rousing Finale. For this new source-critical edition it was possible to consult the autograph in Moscow as well as the early printed editions into which Tchaikovsky sometimes entered a number of minor revisions. Clear the stage for the new reference edition of this indispensable work of the string-orchestra repertoire!

Haydn’s Symphony in C major Hob. I: 90, dated 1788 in the autograph, belongs to a group of works that he composed between the Paris symphonies (Hob. I: 82–87) and the London symphonies (Hob. I: 93–104). It thus belongs to the last symphonies he wrote before his journeys to England in 1791–92 and 1794–95. Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. After the first sketches had been put to paper in 1815, Beethoven only finally put the finishing touches to his last completed symphony in 1824. With its extended finale in which soloists and choir perform, building the bridge to the symphonic cantata with their invocation of fraternity, it marks a caesura in the history of the symphony that echoed long into the nineteenth century. The main theme of the ode “To Joy†by Friedrich Schiller, set to music in the final movement, has become one of the most popular melodies in all of classical music and today serves as the official anthem of Europe. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and furnished with a new preface, this recently prepared edition reflects the latest in Beethoven scholarship. Now,in this study edition, it is available to everyone at a reasonable price and in a handy format.

Haydn’s Symphony in G major Hob. I:81 comes from a series of three symphonies completed in late 1784 (nos. 81, 80 and 79, presumably in that order). No autograph score survives for Hob. I:81, thus our Urtext edition is based on copyists’ manuscripts and first editions. As with so many of his symphonies, Haydn wrote this one to provide new music for his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn.
