String teachers have long turned to Ensembles for Strings to fulfill the need for easy to intermediate ensemble pieces for student string players. Familiar classical melodies are arranged here for 2 3 4 or moreplayers - even string orchestra. Each piece is scored to be playable in first position and in such a manner that maximum results will be achieved regardless of the instrumentation employed. All of the material has been carefullyedited and bowed and was performance tested by the string faculty at San José State University.

Everyone remembers the tune by its subtitle 'Going Home'. This lush song is creatively scored with your intermediate orchestra in mind. Although there appear to be some exposed woodwind passages in this familiar melody they are generously cross-cued so that the work is playable solely with strings and piano. The Austrian late-Romantic composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) is nowadays recognised as one of the greatest composers of his time. A successful conductor during his lifetime it was only after Mahler's death that his own compositions began to enjoy widespread popularity. Composed between 1887-1888 Mahler's celebrated First Symphony received high critical acclaim as a groundbreaking work which took the imagination and narrative of a symphonic poem and gave this the cohesion of earlier structures from the genre.
