Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm, colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes..

Prior to 1991 Ukrainian master composer Yevhen Stankovych's works were regularly censored or banned by Soviet authorities. The ballet “The Agony: Rasputin” (originally titled “Prometheus”) was one such work. This suite from the ballet highlights Stankovych's uniquely pronounced affinity with the vernacular, blending folk motifs with orchestral colors in multilayered polyphony. “Rasputin” was first performed with its original music and libretto in 1989 in Skopje, Macedonia.

Ravel's multi-layered homage in Breitkopf UrtextIn his homage Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is less specifically interested in Couperin than in French music of the late 18th century. In his preface, editor Jean-Francois Monnard explains how Ravel paid a moving and intensely personal tribute to the events of World War I with his multi-layered work. The orchestral version goes back to the original, eponymous piano suite (1914-17). Then, in 1919, the composer selected four pieces from this source, orchestrated them with all of his grace and artistry; the result provides a charming contrast to the pseudo-Baroque musical idiom, and places the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when the three dance movements of the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production.The underpinnings of Monnard's edition are provided by the most important sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work. This is the fifth major Ravel work now available in print from Breitkopf Urtext.An homage to Francois Couperin, but most notably to the French music of the late 18th century. In his multi-layered work Ravel assimilates the events of World War I in a moving and intensely personal way.

The question Why add music to such perfect poetry? preoccupied Schumann long and intensively. His first compositional approach to Goethes Faust began in 1844, but it was not until 1851 that he finally completed the Scenes. At Liszts suggestion, Schumann added an overture in 1853, a symphonic instrumental introduction which atmospherically evokes the action of the Scenes but has no direct thematic reference to them. As an independent overture, the work has been played relatively rarely in concert halls to this day; the general prejudice towards Schumanns late works was no doubt partly responsible for this. The first Urtext edition of the overture was based on the autograph score that was revised by Schumann and served as the principal source. It should give new impulses to the future reception of this work which Paul Dukas hailed as a miracle, from beginning to end.The Faust Overture in its First Urtext Edition.

Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini, each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra, are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher), which serves as the program's closer, demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts, however this concertino can be performed individually to great effect as a short concert opener.
