In the keys of D Major and G Major, this is a perfect piece for first year players as all fingered notes occur on the D and A strings (D and G for bass). The violin 2 and viola parts are doubled, as are the cello and bass parts. Despite the numbering, the overture Leonore No. 2 was Beethoven's first effort to precede his only opera with an adequate introduction. It had been composed last minute and in between the rehearsals for the premiere of the opera Leonore oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe (Leonore, or The Triumph of Marital Love) on 20 November 1805 at the Theater an der Wien. This comprehensive, programmatic work was met with incomprehension at first performances just like the opera itself. Beethoven felt compelled to re-write Leonore completely and presented it under its new title Fidelio. In 1806 he revised the overture to such an extent that a symphonic sonata movement emerged; with another incorrect numbering, Leonore No. 3 has gone down in music history and above all it has achieved a regular place in concert repertory. And in order to complete the confusion: written in 1806/07, only Overture No. 1 is Beethoven's chronologically last effort to write an overture for Leonore, before he - many years later - put an end to this infinite subject with the so-called Fidelio overture for the third version of the opera. After all, thanks to the search after a dramaturgically convincing beginning of the opera, the music world has been enriched by four quite different orchestra scores. The music text of the present score is based on Volume 11 of the Supplements to the Complete Edition. The performance material of the Fidelio and Leonore No. 3 overtures is available in Breitkopf Urtext editions..

Written to help students develop their spiccato bow stroke, this energetic piece is a joyful celebration from the very first measure. The left hand challenges are minimal, allowing the players to focus on controlling their bow on and off the string. A contrasting call-and-response B section in minor mode briefly slows the pace down before the party resumes again. Over time, the overall tempo can be increased as the students become more and more proficient with this all important bow technique. Correlated to Sound Innovations, Book 2, Level 2. (2:30).

Based on the classic fiddle tune Goin to Boston, this is a great hoedown number for strings. It comes complete with several special techniques found in all fiddle music, including bluesy note slides, shuffle bowings, hand slaps, and foot stomps (specific performance directions for each are included in Frank's score notes). Some easy double stops are also included, but Frank advises that they be assigned only to advanced students and incorporated gradually as players become more familiar with the music.

Beethoven did not work continuously on this symphony and interrupted his work a couple of times. As the sketches show, he presumably wrote down first ideas in the autumn of 1800.No other autograph material has survived. As Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven, bitterly reports, Beethoven gave him the autograph, but it was unfortunately stolen by a friend, out of pure friendship. In April 1803, the composition was premiered publicly, together with the first symphony and the third piano concerto with Beethoven himself as soloist. Although Beethoven's first two symphonies are still influenced by Haydn and Mozart, novelties can already be discovered. The second symphony starts breaking away from traditional forms and lets us surmise the monumentality of Beethoven's innovation. The editor, Armin Raab, critically illuminates the transmission of the work and its sources. He also clears up a wide spread belief in older literature, that this cheerful work might have been composed parallel to the Heiligenstadter Testament. The practical performance material by Breitkopf & Hartel is based on the music text of the New Beethoven Complete Edition and constitutes the authoritative reading of Beethoven research.

Right at the beginning of the overture, Telemann comes up with a surprising idea. After the -'bare' entry of the wind section, the string tutti do not join in the playing until the third bar. The 'harlequinade' often appearing in Telemann's overture suites obtains its attraction not least from syncopes and from a permanent change of tone colour. The 'Espagniol' whose title prom-ises a bit of urbanity turns out to be a saraband, the 'Bourree en Trompette' justifies its name by the tone repetitions typical of trumpet music. In the context of the whole, the 'Sommeille', a harmonically unusual movement in C minor, is almost a piece across the border. Even in this gently rocking piece, Telemann is not at a loss for unobtrusive wit when he lets the upper parts die down shortly before the end, only a single bass tone represents the last chord.

Fireball was originally composed for the television broadcast of the bike race, Tour de France, for CBS Sports. The footage that inspired me featured dozens of bike racers at top speed racing down a mountain road. The stress and competition forces the riders into extremely dangerous situations reflected in the music. Thank you to Lynne Latham for the great ending idea. (2:25).

Apart from his numerous instrumental works, Carl Stamitz left also four horn concertos. For reasons of the playing technique, the concerto was transposed down a semitone in the present edition. This work is especially characteristic of the personal style as well as of the epoch-mak-ing reformations by the Mannheim School.

Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, often referred to as the first composition of the modern era, is one of Debussy's most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources, and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Baerenreiter's new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which, however, contains many engraver errors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration, countless discrepancies are revealed.

Stratoscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). But also sheer reality in the fourth movement when the composer translates into music the damage caused toour planet by us human beings. Stratoscape: a fantastic view of Planet Earth!
