Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang†symphonies along with the London and the Paris symphonies belong to his most popular works today. The “Sturm und Drang†works contain not only masterpieces such as the already published “Farewell-Symphony†and the “Maria Theresia†symphony but also gems such as the recently published “La Passione†symphony (2013) and now the Symphony in B major No. 46.The publication of this symphony represents a continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large vocal compositions, operas and symphonic works. The Symphony in B major is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn†and is published with a full score and large format performing material on sale.

On letting go(Concerning the selection of the texts) In the selection of the texts, I have allowed myself to be motivated and inspired by the concept of 'letting go'. This appears to me to be one of the essential aspects of dying, but also of life itself. We humans cling far too strongly to successful achievements, whether they have to do with material or ideal values, or relationships of all kinds. We cannot and do not want to let go, almost as if our life depended on it. As we will have to practise the art of letting go at the latest during our hour of death, perhaps we could already make a start on this while we are still alive. Tagore describes this farewell with very simple but strikingly vivid imagery: 'I will return the key of my door'. I have set this text for tenor solo. Here I imagine, and have correspondingly noted in a certain passage of the score, that the protagonist finds himself as though 'in an ocean' of voices in which he is however not drowning, but immersing himself in complete relaxation. The phenomenon of letting go is described even more simply and tersely in Psalm 90, verse 12: 'So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom'. This cannot be expressed more plainly.I have begun the requiem with a solo boy's voice singing the beginning of this psalm on a single note, the note A. This in effect says it all. The work comes full circle at the culmination with a repeat of the psalm which subsequently leads into a resplendent 'lux aeterna'. The intermediate texts of the Requiem which highlight the phenomenon of letting go in the widest spectrum of colours originate on the one hand from the Latin liturgy of the Messa da Requiem (In Paradisum, Libera me, Requiem aeternam, Mors stupebit) and on the other hand from poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Hermann Hesse, Rabindranath Tagore and Rainer Maria Rilke. All texts have a distinctive positive element in common and view death as being an organic process within the great system of the universe, for example when Hermann Hesse writes: 'Entreiss dich, Seele, nun der Zeit, entreiss dich deinen Sorgen und mache dich zum Flug bereit in den ersehnten Morgen' ['Tear yourself way , o soul, from time, tear yourself away from your sorrows and prepare yourself to fly away into the long-awaited morning'] and later: 'Und die Seele unbewacht will in freien Flugen schweben, um im Zauberkreis der Nacht tief und tausendfach zu leben' ['And the unfettered soul strives to soar in free flight to live in the magic sphere of the night, deep and thousandfold']. Or Joseph von Eichendorff whose text evokes a distant song in his lines: 'Und meine Seele spannte weit ihre Flugel aus. Flog durch die stillen Lande, als floge sie nach Haus' ['And my soul spread its wings wide. Flew through the still country as if homeward bound.']Here a strong romantically tinged occidental resonance can be detected which is however also accompanied by a universal spirit going far beyond all cultures and religions. In the beginning was the sound Long before any sort of word or meaningful phrase was uttered by vocal chords, sounds, vibrations and tones already existed. This brings us back to the music. Both during my years of study and at subsequent periods, I had been an active participant in the world of contemporary music, both as percussionist and also as conductor and composer. My early scores had a somewhat adventurous appearance, filled with an abundance of small black dots: no rhythm could be too complicated, no register too extreme and no harmony too dissonant. I devoted myself intensely to the handling of different parameters which in serial music coexist in total equality: I also studied aleatory principles and so-called minimal music.I subsequently emigrated and took up residence in Spain from where I embarked on numerous travels over the years to India, Africa and South America. I spent repeated periods during this time as a resident in non-European countries. This meant that the currents of contemporary music swept past me vaguely and at a great distance. What I instead absorbed during this period were other completely new cultures in which I attempted to immerse myself as intensively as possible.I learned foreign languages and came into contact with musicians of all classes and styles who had a different cultural heritage than my own: I was intoxicated with the diversity of artistic potential.Nevertheless, the further I distanced myself from my own Western musical heritage, the more this returned insistently in my consciousness. The scene can be imagined of sitting somewhere in the middle of the Brazilian jungle surrounded by the wailing of Indians and out of the blue being provided with the opportunity to hear Beethoven's late string quartets: this can be a heart-wrenching experience, akin to an identity crisis. This type of experience can also be described as cathartic. Whatever the circumstances, my 'renewed' occupation with the 'old' country would not permit me to return to the point at which I as an audacious young student had maltreated the musical parameters of so-called contemporary music. A completely different approach would be necessary: an extremely careful approach, inching my way gradually back into the Western world: an approach which would welcome tradition back into the fold, attempt to unfurl the petals and gently infuse this tradition with a breath of contemporary life.Although I am aware that I will not unleash a revolution or scandal with this approach, I am nevertheless confident as, with the musical vocabulary of this Requiem, I am travelling in an orbit in which no ballast or complex structures will be transported or intimated: on the contrary, I have attempted to form the message of the texts in music with the naivety of a 'homecomer'. Letters of the composer have come down to us only on a few of Haydn’s symphonies, amongst them the “Laudon†Symphony Hob. I:69. In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets. Also, the symphony requires two bassoons, but no flutes, corresponding with the available musicians at the court of Esterházy between 1775 and 1776. In continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and G. Henle Verlag, this edition is based on the Urtext of the Complete Edition “Joseph Haydn Works†published by G. Henle Verlag.

Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the “English symphonies†as they are stylistically closely linked to the “London Bachâ€, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ‘Leicht und nicht vil Concertirendâ€, meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

This edition clarifies a performance aspect of Haydn’s Symphony in G major that has long been misunderstood: in m. 1 of the second movement (Largo) the viola, violoncello and several wind instrument parts are marked “soloâ€, indicating that they play important motifs or themes and ought to stand out. Contrary to other editions, the “solo†marking in the violoncello should not be construed as indicating a solo instrument with the remaining cellos doubling the basses. Rather, the cellos should play as a section so as to stand out all the more clearly.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydnâ€. The complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang†symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies is now available from Bärenreiter.

The occasion for the composition, described as a âsuite in the old styleâ, was the 200th birthday of the Norwegian-Danish poet Ludvik Holberg (1684-1754), which was celebrated in Bergen with several festive events. Initially, a piano version of the work was written in August 1884, but the composer already had the arrangement for string orchestra in mind, which he made just one month later. As a starting point, Grieg chose baroque dance movements from Holberg's era, but skilfully combined them with elements of his own tonal language, such as chromatic progressions and dynamic swells. The orchestral version of the âHolberg Suiteâ, which was very successful right from the beginning, is still one of Grieg's most popular compositions today and now enriches the Henle programme for string orchestra.

Brahms composed his Triumphlied for eight-part chorus, solo baritone and orchestra as a direct reaction to the victory of the German army in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the consequent founding of the German Empire. Similar to the German Requiem completed shortly before, Brahms himself compiled the text from the Bible, in this case from Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelations. Because of the somewhat melodramatic tone of the composition and the nationalistic background to the works genesis, in recent years the Triumphlied has seldom been heard in concert halls. Unlike overly-patriotic occasional works such as Richard Wagner's Kaisermarsch, the Triumphlied is true Brahms and is a musically rich composition. This study edition takes the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition (HL 51486030), thereby representing the highest scholarly precision. The Appendix contains an exciting new discovery, a previously-unknown early version of the 1st movement in C major, which was only rediscovered in 2012 in Bremen.

The premiere of this work in December 1813 ranks among the greatest successes Beethoven ever celebrated in public as a composer. One reviewer wrote at the time that in its themes the new symphony was “so favourable and easily comprehensible that every music lover falls for the powerful allure of its beauty.†The incisiveness of the themes is fundamentally related to the basic ostinato rhythms, which help shape each movement’s distinctive character. Richard Wagner even called the composition, with its ecstatic finale, an “apotheosis of the dance.†Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and furnished with a new preface, this recently prepared edition reflects the latest in Beethoven scholarship. Sandwiched between the popular Symphonies Nos. 7 and 9, the relatively short Eighth Symphony finds itself in a difficult position even now. Right after the premiere in February 1814, one critic opined that it had made “no splash.†At first glance it makes recourse to already outmoded forms and genres, even reviving a minuet for the third movement (in lieu of a slow movement) after an Allegretto scherzoso. But Beethoven engages intensively with music history, breaking apart traditional procedures and patterns and finding new, surprising solutions that make his Eighth a milestone in symphonic history. Based on the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and furnished with a new preface, this recently prepared edition reflects the latest in Beethoven scholarship. Debussy wrote these two short dances to a commission from the instrument-making firm of Pleyel, which was keen to use famous names in the marketing of its newly-developed chromatic harp. The dances are also playable without problem on the pedal harp, which was to replace the chromatic harp on the concert platform. The archaic style of the pieces, including modal harmonies, used to express a “sacred†rite and a “profane†dance of joy, points to the enthusiasm for antiquity of Debussy himself and of the artistic world around 1900. This is Henle's first critical edition of the pieces, and is based on careful checking of the autograph and first edition.

Composer's Notes: “In writing this work I wanted to compose something which was both timeless and contemporary, both sacred and secular. The title (Sacred Songs) is therefore slightly misleading as the three poems are concerned with political repression in Latin America and are deliberately coupled with traditional religious texts to emphasise a deeper solidarity with the poor of that sub-continent. It was my interest in Liberation Theology which made me combine the poems of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina with the texts of the Latin mass in Búsqueda (an earlier music-theatre work) and has now led me to attempt a similar synthesis of ideas in Cantos Sagrados. The voices in Ariel Dorfman's poems belong to those who suffer a particular type of political repression: the 'disappearance' of political prisoners. Ana Maria Mendoza's poem about the Virgin of Guadeloupe tackles the same problem by asking a more fundamental cultural and historical question.â€.

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Hailing from 1791, the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity, “The Miracleâ€, was bestowed erroneously, for the miracle - that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert - took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless; from the subtle relations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements, to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies, Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Thanks to its skilful combination of Romantic melody and sparkling virtuosity, Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto op. 3 has been one of the most popular works of its genre since its Moscow premiere in 1905. No wonder, for the virtuoso double bass player Koussevitzky had composed it for his very own instrument. As early as 1906/07 a first piano reduction was published in Moscow, followed by a second in 1910 in Leipzig. However, both contain so many mistakes in the solo part that there is still uncertainty about the correct musical text in many passages to this day. The double bass player Tobias Glöckler has therefore prepared his Urtext edition using several sources: as well as the manuscript performance material and the piano reductions published during the composer's lifetime, he has also studied recordings with Koussevitzky as soloist - thereby finally producing a thoroughly-researchedUrtext edition of the orchestral score and piano reduction of this classic of the double bass literature. As with all double bass concertos published by Henle Publishers, this edition also contains the piano reduction by Christoph Sobanski in two keys (E minor and F sharp minor) for performance with solo or orchestral tuning.

Bach's harpsichord concerti, extremely popular among pianists, are presumably reworkings of pieces originally written for the violin. Bach, however, succeeded in transferring the diverse idiosyncrasies of violin technique to the keyboard with such ingenuity that most of today's pianists also include these concerti in their standard repertoire. The first concerto in D minor is perhaps the most popular - not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. Now, as a prelude to a series of all of Bach's harpsichord concerti, G. Henle Publishers presents a piano reduction and study edition (score) of the D-minor concerto. None other than András Schiff, the outstanding Bach expert, has provided fingering suggestions.

With his first horn concerto, the merely eighteen-year-old Richard Strauss succeeded in producing a captivating masterstroke. To this day, the concerto is beloved throughout the world (not only) by horn players, and together with Mozart's masterworks, numbers among the essential pieces in the instrument's repertoire. Peter Damm, former principal horn for the Staatskapelle Dresden and world-class soloist, has not only performed the concerto publicly over 170 times himself, but has also presented pivotal research findings and publications on its genesis. Prepared after reviewing all surviving sources, the Urtext edition he has edited may thus been regarded as the edition of reference. The orchestral score, available in a practical study edition, eliminates innumerable errors from the first edition.
