Inspired by Jeff Donaldson's dizzyingly complex painting JamPact JelliTite (for Jamila), George Lewis's Flux for 16 players was written during the composer's residency at Oberlin Conservatory, where the work was composed in 2014 and premiered that year by the Contemporary Music Ensemble. Dedicated to the memory of Wendell Logan, the composer who founded Oberlin's jazz program in the late 20th century, the score is also inscribed with gratitude to the students and faculty of Oberlin, in particular Timothy Weiss, conductor of the Oberlin CME.
The wild, 12-minute score leaps unexpectedly between musical ideas and calls for a wide range of extended performance techniques: quarter tones, multiphonics and percussive effects in the winds, glissandi on the piano strings, exotic bowing techiques, and more. The score includes full performance notes and is available for purchase as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. Performance materials are available on hire.

The Song of the Earth, composed in the summer of 1908, is Mahler's best-known and most personal work. Reflecting drastic changes in his life, its immense emotional density is very moving. Until the very end, Mahler continued to refine the extremely differentiated instrumentation, as is evident in numerous retouchings in the autograph score and engraver's model. It is therefore all the more regrettable that he was neither able to perform his Symphony in Songs himself nor that he was involved in its printing. Unfortunately, in the posthumously published first edition of 1912 and the subsequent editions edited by Erwin Ratz and Karl Heinz Fussl, many questions remained unanswered, while other were answered in a dubious way.The edition is the first text-critical one of the work on a scientifically sound basis. It offers not only a more reliable musical text, but also systematically and lucidly prepared information on the sources, their transmission and evaluation. All editorial decisions have been documented in a transparently comprehensible manner - in particular those leading to new audible results. Work-related notes on performance practice, which for the first time include Mahler's conducting indications, offer valuable, indispensable interpretive aids. In addition to the regular five clarinet parts, the set of parts includes two additional parts (3rd clarinet/Eb clarinet, bass clarinet/3rd clarinet in places where the latter plays Eb clarinet) to allow performances with only four clarinets. The completely revised piano reduction reproduces the orchestral texture true to the score without losing sight of playability. Both Mahler's piano autograph and the piano reduction by Woss, which was commissioned by the composer himself, served as an inspiration for this.

Dualities by Emily Howard is a contemporary work for an ensemble of 14 players. The work is an expression of the fascination with the juxtaposition of extremes and explores relationships between emotion and reason, constructivism and spontaneity, complexity and simplicity. The resultant musical structure is an accumulation of transitions between contrasting soundworlds. Dualities was commissioned by Ensemble 10/10, the Contemporary Music Group of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic who gave the first performance on 5 October 2005 at the Eleanor Rathbone Theatre, University of Liverpool. Little is known about the actual composition process of Lemminkainen and the performance and publication history is rather complex, resulting in a first complete printing of all the four movements en suite through the complete edition of Jean Sibelius Works only in 2013.In summer 1894 Sibelius went to Central Europe, carrying among others a plan for an opera freely based on the Kalevala in his mind. But during this trip he reassessed his composing: I think I have found my old self again, musically speaking. I think I really am a tone painter and a poet. As a result he abandoned his opera plans, but musical parts may have found their way into the Lemminkainen pieces which he started composing during that time. Definitely the overture had, it is now known and loved as The Swan of Tuonela. Lemminkainen became popular from the beginning and has attained a fixed position in the concert repertoire.

Commissioned to write a piece for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, Davies provided a musical General Assembly of his own: a bright overture based on an Australian aboriginal song which gives rise to 'national anthems' of various kinds and instrumental colourings. Finally the 'anthems' are combined, 'if not triumphantly', Davies says, 'at least in a manner whereby they get along together'. The first performance took place in June 1995 in Nottingham. It was given by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Peter Maxwell Davies. Score (miniature). Duration c. 14mins.

Niccolò Piccinni (1728–1800) was one of the most significant figures in Italian and French opera during the second half of the 18th century. His Diane et Endymion, a three-act tragédie lyrique based on the mythological tale of love between a goddess and a shepherd, was first performed in Paris in 1784. The overture reveals the composer’s mastery in capturing both the grandeur and intimacy of the drama. After a stately introduction, graceful melodies and lively contrasting sections with vibrant orchestration set the tone for an enchanting and emotional musical journey.

Concerto for flute and orchestra. Study score edition. First performed at the Flanders Festival in Brussels 12th October 2001. Composer's Notes: I have been very familiar with the flute since my earliest pieces. I like the sound in which breathing is ever present and with timbral possibilities that befit my musical language: the instrument's body makes it possible to write phrases that go through grinding textures coloured with phonemes whispered by the flutist which gradually go towards pure and smooth sounds. Kaija Saariaho Duration 18 minutes. Solo part is also available on sale. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire only.

Ravel's multi-layered homage in Breitkopf UrtextIn his homage Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is less specifically interested in Couperin than in French music of the late 18th century. In his preface, editor Jean-Francois Monnard explains how Ravel paid a moving and intensely personal tribute to the events of World War I with his multi-layered work. The orchestral version goes back to the original, eponymous piano suite (1914-17). Then, in 1919, the composer selected four pieces from this source, orchestrated them with all of his grace and artistry; the result provides a charming contrast to the pseudo-Baroque musical idiom, and places the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when the three dance movements of the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production. The underpinnings of Monnard's edition are provided by the most important sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work. This is the fifth major Ravel work now available in print from Breitkopf Urtext. An homage to Francois Couperin, but most notably to the French music of the late 18th century. In his multi-layered work Ravel assimilates the events of World War I in a moving and intensely personal way.

The five first of the six symphonies by Erkki Melartin (1875-1937), dated from 1903 to 1916, represent the National Romantic Finnish musical heritage based on Austo-German orchestral tradition. Melartin himself thought of Symphony No. 3 as his testament and a description of a battle towards enjoying life, since the time of its birth was a period when Melartin's own life nearly ended. He had fallen ill of tuberculosis, and partly had to give up his work as a composer and teacher of music theory in order to recover from the - at the time often fatal - disease in a local sanatorium. At the premiere the symphony had an impact on its audience, as it indeed seemed to describe the joys and sufferings and the final peace of mind of the composer. The new editions of Melartin's symphonies have born as a project of Erkki Melartin Society with support of the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The performance materials are available for hire from Fennica Gehrman.
