Promising Discovery When a recording of this Symphony No. 17 by Friedrich Schneider appeared in 2002, it attracted some attention. Now, Breitkopf & Hartel presents the work that, like all Schneider's symphonies, had remained unpublished, for the first time in a modern edition. The composer does not use a pathetic-heroic tone as suggested by the key, but follows the urgent, roving, and cantabile character that the key has possessed, especially in early Romanticism since the Sturm und Drang. It is reminiscent of Franz Schubert who ventured a very similar reinterpretation of the classical symphony. With this work Schneider succeeds in designing a remarkably coherent and carefully developed composition. A gain for the repertoire, since the symphony, composed in 1822 and premiered that year in the Leipzig Gewandhaus, shows so much merit.

Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016) was one of Finland's internationally most successful composers. He made his major breakthrough with the Symphony No. 7, Angel of Light, in the 1990s, but his output includes numerous classic operas, concertos, chamber music and choral works. Over his extensive career, he progressed from Neo-Classicism to strict dodecaphony to free-tonal Neo-Romanticism, combining modernism with mystical romanticism in his later works. According to the composer, the role of the composer is to be mediator, a midwife, who helps the music become alive on its own terms; Listen to what the music wants to tell you, he told his composition students, sense where it wants to go. Rautavaara rose to great international fame with the success of his Symphony No. 7, Angel of Light (1995) powered by the prize-winning recording (Helsinki Philharmonic, Segerstam, Ondine label) later the same year. Many high-profile international commissions followed, creating yet more prize-winning recordings. To mark the 25th anniversary of the work's premiere - in its original form as the Bloomington Symphony - by the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and conductor David Pickett, Fennica Gehrman is publishing an entirely new edition of the symphony based on all available sources, including the composer's manuscript and his markings in various printed scores. New York Overture was commissioned by the New York Chamber Symphony and composed for the rich and bright sound that this orchestra reveals under Gerard Schwarz’s wonderfully buoyant and energetic leadership. Having worked with these intense artists many times before, I found it easy to imagine, in a single vision, a dramatic overture cast in a traditional and serious manner. My impressions and memories of New York provided a direct catalyst. Woven into the overture are a number of ‘hints’ derived from well-known melodies which have endured as popular romanticizations of New York’s manifold personality. Coupled with these ‘hints’ are my own Tin-Pan Alley and jazz experiences, presented and transformed throughout the melodic and harmonic fabric. Whoever attempted to compose a Latin mass in the middle of the 19th century had to compete with great models and traditional composition techniques. Bach's Mass in B minor and Beethoven's Missa solemnis, but even his earlier Mass in C major (performed by Schumann) are among the key works of a great mass tradition in the reception of High Romanticism. For Lilburn's only full-length choral work, Prodigal Country, the composer set three poems to music – Robin Hyde's Journey from New Zealand, Allen Curnow's New Zealand City and Walt Whitman's Song of Myself. From the early works redolent of the influence of Sibelius and Vaughan Williams, to the electro-acoustic pieces of his later years, his works have been instrumental in establishing a genuine vernacular in New Zealand classical music.

A rewarding extension to the repertoire Friedrich Schneider, remembered in the music world almost entirely through his oratorio Das Weltgericht (The Last Judgment), bequeathed at his death in 1853 an oeuvre of over 1000 works, among them 23 symphonies. Breitkopf & Hartel, whose association with Schneider began as early as 1805, is now publishing for the first time an edition of his Symphony No. 16. The symphony composed in 1818 is impressive proof that outside of Vienna the romantic symphony was also developing then. To this day Schneider's extensive symphonic works are almost completely unknown. Russian composer, Alexander Glazounov (1865-1936) was director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory for a large part of his career. As a prolific composer, his works were always well-received, Concerto in E-flat for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra being no exception. Glazounov's compositional style was particularly significant due to his successful reconciliation of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russian music. The Symphony No. 1 (originally in five movements) was first performed in Budapest in 1889, but the premiere as well as two further performances in Hamburg and Weimar turned out to be a fiasco. After 1894 Mahler removed the Blumine-movement. Until the last performance under his direction in New York in 1909, Mahler made revisions again and again. This edition strives to present a, for the performance practice, reliable music text of the final extant version that in 1910 Mahler corrected and deemed accurate for the new print. Spiritual AffinitiesSchumann had already worked on Byron's Manfred as a law student, and the topic fascinated him from that time on. Perhaps he discovered a spiritual affinity to himself in the romantic hero's inner conflict? In any event, he decided on a stage rendition of the drama with incidental music, an entirely new genre that he had been dreaming of for some time already. He conducted the overture - it dates from 1848 - for the first time as a separate piece in March 1852. In addition, he followed the preparations for the first edition of the complete performance material very closely, which was published by Breitkopf in Leipzig that same year. The Breitkopf Urtext edition of the Manfred Overture is based on this first print of the score and parts revised by Schumann. At the same time, this edition also marks a new chapter in the expansion of the collection of Schumann overtures that have already been published by Breitkopf (to Hermann und Dorothea op. 136, Szenen aus Goethes Faust WoO 3 and Genoveva op. 81).Audiences should be ready for something new and unheard of, wrote Robert Schumann to Franz Liszt in late 1851, referring to the world premiere of his Dramatic Poem Manfred.
