Explore Middle Eastern sounds with this work that combines traditional folk songs with original music. After a haunting opening, authentic Middle Eastern percussion instruments create the groove that accompanies the folk song Ala Dal'ona. As the orchestration builds, original themes are juxtaposed with existing material before an extended percussion ensemble takes center stage. The final folk song, Tafta Hindi, ultimately morphs into an ostinato over a magnificent presentation of the original theme found throughout the work. A dynamic work for symphony orchestra!

Composer's Note Once, we had a joint conception to create a concert telling a life story. The premiere was planned to take place on the Acropolis in Athens. It was intended to be a large event, a hybrid of a mystery play and an opera. Krzysztof Kieslowski would be the director, Krzysztof Piesiewicz was responsible for the script, and I was planning to compose the music. We thought it might be the first of a series of musical performances, to be developed in various interesting places around the world in the next few years. But it was life that authored a different ending: Krzysztof Kieslowski died in March of 1996. The first part of Requiem for My Friend is meant as a farewell to Krzysztof Kieslowski. I dedicate this music to him. Zbigniew Preisner.

It was at the suggestion of the conductor of the World Premiere, Mariss Jansons, that Jorg Widmann refers to musical characteristics of Beethoven's 7th and 8th Symphony. His starting points primarily are specific fast types of movement in the Beethoven works which he translates into his tonal language. Widmann has chosen the same instrumentation as the Beethoven symphonies and takes on the task of causing a similar 'stir and rhythmic pressure' (Widmann) with these economical means.

The future of our fragile world is in our hands. As Sir David Attenborough stated on the Climate Conference in Glasgow on November, 1st, 2021: ... We are already in trouble. The stability we all depend on is breaking. This story is one of inequality, as well as instability. Today, those who’ve done the least to cause this problem, are being the hardest hit. Ultimately, all of us will feel the impact, some of which are now unavoidable. ... We’re going to have to learn together, how to achieve this, ensuring none are left behind. We must use this opportunity to create a more equal world and our motivation should not be fear, but hope. ... . We must be more caring about the wonderful place we live in... our unique home: Planet Earth. This music is both a shoutout to take care of our planet and a hymn to the beauty of this place. The composition is suited for stage as well as for the enjoyment in music school orchestral practice.

This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar's moving, poetic setting of the eponymous poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman is about a dying man and his journey beyond death to God. Before the eyes of the listeners, a musical image of the soul is created which flies past mocking demons to God with its protecting angel at its side, is allowed to look at God briefly, then faces the purgatory confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio, and for large choirs it is a thrilling alternative to the established repertoire of Requiem settings. Its popularity is thanks to the suggestive, often sensuous power of the music, the great choral scenes of the demons and the angels, and the three impressive solo parts. All previous editions were reprints based on the historic first printed materials, which are inconsistent. By contrast, Carus has produced a modern, newly-engraved edition, compatible in all sections, which takes all the sources into consideration and evaluates the autograph manuscript in detail. For this edition the complete orchestral material is available on sale, and the vocal score and full score contain both English and German singing texts. The full score is also available digitally.*,A milestone of late Romantic choral music, and a standard work in Great Britain*,First modern score with a full Critical Report and complete performance material- English and german singing texts

Invention is an exciting work for high school or college orchestra that features an accented, multi-metered main theme, contrapuntal writing, a fugue, a reflective melodic interlude, and an optional extended violin cadenza. The title refers to the process undertaken by great inventors such as Thomas Edison and Leonardo Da Vinci. In this work, the composer reflects the many emotions and processes an inventor might experience as he is working on his creation: the spark of inspiration, the excitement of a new project, trial and error, frustration and anger, intensity, and, at last, success!

This piece, arranged by Dorothy Straub, celebrates the excitement of a very short horse race. Using songs that are sung before each of the three races---songs of Kentucky, Maryland, and New York---the orchestra takes on the role of the winning horse, with the accelerando being the final race to the finish line. Though timely now that the amazing horse, American Pharaoh, won the Triple Crown in June of 2015, this piece was written prior to that event to celebrate all the horses that compete. (6:30).

Behold, A Savior! is a portrait of a promise and a portrait of the fulfillment of that promise. Throughout this musical, Jay Rouse and Rose Aspinall skillfully weave scripture and dramatic first-hand accounts of the birth of Jesus into beloved carols and original songs. Each monologue and song will take you on a journey—from the longing of Zechariah, the joy and acceptance of Mary, and the courage of Joseph to the accounts of the shepherds and wise men. Designed with flexibility in mind, these songs and stories can be presented individually across the Advent season or in their entirety for a special event. An optional introduction and closing narration, accessible solos, and gorgeous orchestrations add to the flexibility and will make this one of the most practical collections in your library.

Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext
ISBN 9790004213698. 6.5 x 9 inches.
Like Hamlet Overture, originating at about the same time, Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, composed in 1888, focuses on the human existential question: To be or not to be - triumph over fate or triumph of fate? The per aspera ad astra dramaturgy underlying the symphony culminates in triumphant certainty. If Tchaikovsky was initially euphoric, then severe self-doubts befell him after he conducted the premiere in St. Petersburg. These doubts demonstrably led him to make interpretative changes for the Hamburg performance in 1889, including a cut in the finale. Only with the extremely positive response to this performance did his doubts dispel. Nevertheless, Tchaikovsky himself never again conducted the 5th symphony. It was only posthumously established in the repertoire through Arthur Nikisch's commitment. The new edition's textual criticism takes into account besides the autograph and first edition also the first edition's orchestral parts, together with the piano arrangement produced from the autograph by Sergei Taneyev. In addition to thoroughly clarifying dynamics and articulation, the source comparison also corrected many errors and solved problematical passages, such as, for instance, the trombone entry in m. 372 of the finale. Considered, moreover, for the first time has been the composer's doubts about his work and its ambiguities, frequently successfully suppressed in the history of its performance and reception. Tchaikovsky's conductor's copy is unfortunately lost, hence his alterations made for the Hamburg performance are not precisely known. They have survived only indirectly through remarks that Willem Mengelberg left to posterity, for which he could draw on Tchaikovsky's conductor's score and oral references by the composer's brother Modest. So, anyone wishing to deal seriously with the work's certainties will not be able to do so in the future without having also to deal with its uncertainties.Tchaikovsky's Hamburg Symphony in the Urtext.

Like his subsequent non-certo For Marcos Balter – also composed during the upheavals, political and otherwise, of the year 2020 – Tyshawn Sorey's For Roscoe Mitchell for cello and orchestra is a single-movement work that imagines a non-adversarial, non-hierarchical relationship between the soloist and the ensemble. The 20-minute piece is named in admiration of Sorey's friend and collaborator Roscoe Mitchell, the Chicago-based bandleader, composer, educator, and performer. Cellist Seth Parker Woods gave the world premiere in November 2020 alongside conductor David Robertson and the Seattle Symphony, who commissioned the piece.

Following a stately introduction that reflects the massive grandeur of medieval cathedrals, the orchestra takes off with an energetic original theme that culminates with the inspiring classic hymn, “Praise to the Lord.†The substantial use of multiple meters keeps everyone alert, including the conductor. Optional notes are provided for less experienced ensembles to make this playable in first position (except basses). Technically conservative enough for 3rd year groups, musically and rhythmically interesting enough to hold the attention of advanced players. This flexible piece will work for concert, contest, and sacred settings.

Hartke's cello concerto, Da Pacem, takes its title from a Latin hymn that begins “Grant peace in our day.” It is a reflection on these unsettled and unsettling times. As the work's protagonist, the solo cellist journeys through a considerable variety of musical landscapes. Movements: I. Da Pacem (Fantasia) II. In diebus nostris (Scherzo) III. Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, often referred to as the first composition of the modern era, is one of Debussy's most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources, and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Baerenreiter's new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which, however, contains many engraver errors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration, countless discrepancies are revealed.

Flodden by Sally Beamish is a 28-minute work for soprano and chamber orchestra with texts by R.S. Craig, Jean Elliot and J.B. Selkirk, with two interludes in between. It was written in 2013 for the 500th anniversary of the tragedy at Flodden Field, a battle which led to casualties and losses of historic proportions. Sally Beamish decided to set the texts and to write for soprano to express the grief of those left behind -- particularly the women and children. The orchestration throughout the work is spare and angular; characterized by stark exposed solo lines, nervy ornamentation, and blurred string textures.
Flodden was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, supported with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation, RVW Trust, Cruden Foundation and Hope Scott Trust. It was first performed in September 2013 at Hamilton Town House by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Joseph Swensen, with soprano soloist Shuna Scott Sendall, and was shortlisted for both a Royal Philharmonic Society and a British Composer Award.
The full score (EP 72932) is available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Library. The performance material can be hired.
