Instrument : organ Nombre de Pages : 62 This School of Organ Playing presupposes a certain technical facility on the piano. The pedal exercises at the beginning are rudimentary and should be practiced in all keys, gradually accelerating the tempo. The studies are graded according to their polyphony, beginning with simple two part exercises, followed by those in three and more parts. This acquaintance with the strict principles of polyphonic music, and the introduction to effective part writing, with a knowledge of harmonic form and architectonic values, provide the essential background for the correct performance of polyphonic music, especialle the fugue. The most important musical forms have been used to illustrate the various possibilites of registration and its relationship to style (colourful, individualistic and smooth playing). The studies are so arranged that earlier technical points, etc. are constantly reviewed, through comparison of style and form, in order to fix, or refreshen, the ideas in the student's mind. It is very important that the evolution of organ music from vocal music should be made clear to the student the very beginning, both musically and intellectually. He will be shown the technical evolution of organ music during the centuries and thus prepared for an artistic execution and interpretation of old and new words, especially for the incomparable art of our great Johann Sebastian Bach. Traditional church Organs are no longer the exclusive domain of Bach and the like - popular styles have conquered the “king of instruments” and found wide-ranging forms of expression. The only thing missing to date is a broad selection of suitable pieces. This is where Jazz Inspirations For Organ steps in. This comprehensive collection of moderately difficult pieces by various composers and organists offers “classical” swing jazz blues and Latin numbers side by side with rumba ragtime and calypso. A chorale prelude on Silent Night rubs shoulders with a Swing Fughetta and Latin for Lefties. The collection's great attraction lies in its personal treatment of the various themes. The editors are experienced organists fully conversant with the timbral possibilities of the pipe Organ. Their suggestions regarding registration are valuable tips that allow organists to develop their own style and be creative.

Toccatas and various compositions (Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, Secção dos Reservados, Ms. MM 60) Editors: Andrea Macinanti, Francesco Tasini Series: Alessandro Scarlatti. Complete Works for Keyboard Publication Date: 2007 Pages: pp. 144 The third volume of Alessandro Scarlatti’s complete works comprises ms. MM 60 kept at the Coimbra University Library (Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal – Secção dos Reservados). The -manuscript contains pieces specifically ascribed to Scarlatti, as the title in c. 61r shows: Sonate / Per / ORGANO / Del / Sig.r / Alesandro Scarlatti. The section following a new heading in c. 107r – TOCCATE / per Organo – can also be considered Scarlatti’s work; a confirmation of this assessment stems from cc. 107v-109v, Toccata, and 109v-110v, Fuga in G major, both of which pieces also feature in the Higgs ms. (New Haven, Yale University, Misc. Ms. 164) as well as in ms. Add. 32161 (London, British Library) and, moreover, the same Toccata is also comprised in ms. 3958 in Münster’s Diözesanbibliothek (Santini Collection). The extensive initial section in ms. MM 60 cc. 1r-38v, with no indication of authorship, is included in an Addendum; its excellent-quality musical writing is perfectly in keeping with Alessandro Scarlatti’s style, though at the moment the music cannot be attributed to him with any degree of certainty; the music resembles some of Gaetano Franzaroli’s Risposte d’Organo, also comprised in the same manuscript.
