Robert Helmschrott, born in 1938, was professor at the Munich Musikhochschule where he was also headmaster from 1995-2003. He wrote numerous choral and orchestral works and is one of the most important German representatives of contemporary church music. His work 'Salut' is a one-movement concert piece which is rewarding for both players. After a lengthy introduction for solo trumpet, both instruments present fireworks of brilliant idiomatic figurations, yet also make sure that pensive, lyrical tones get their fair share too. A rewarding concert piece of ca. 8 minutes' duration.

Shining rays stream from the 'Messe de sainte Cecile'. At first people were dazzled, then bewitched, then overcome. This is how the composer Camille Saint-Saens described his impression of what was probably Charles Gounod's best-known setting of the mass. The work written in 1855 in honor of the patron saint of church music, soon became well-known beyond the borders of France and acquired a degree of popularity like almost no other sacred composition. In the Messe de sainte Cecile, Gounod combines sublime simplicity with operatic-dramatic elements and a colorful, effective orchestration. Critical edition in proven Carus quality. Bruckner described his setting of Psalm 150 (1892) as “my best festive cantata of all”. With its monumental Halleluja theme and the great fugue on “Alles, was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn”, the psalm setting has a pronounced festive character. For this edition, Marius Popp has transcribed the orchestral writing for organ. Originally scored for large orchestra and large choir, this festive cantata can now also be performed by smaller choral forces in a sacred space. The fascinating combination of filigree motifs, powerful passages and chromatically bold complexities are expressed in a completely new way in this arrangement. An exciting setting of one of the most popular psalms for more experienced choirs to perform in festive church services or concerts. The vocal and choral scores from the original version (also available as Carus 27.410/00) can be used with the organ version.. The names of Michael Haydn's masses are associated either with a specific commission or with the composition's dedicatee. Thus, Haydn composed the Missa in honorem Sti. Gotthardi, also known as the Admont Mass, for the Admont Abbey located in the region of Styria, Austria, where Gotthard Kuglmayr was the Abbot. The mass combines formal concentration with liturgical function. The songlike melody, the unity of the motivic material, and the balanced harmony of solemn and lyrical passages show how intensively Haydn concerned himself with the genre. Due to its length and its orchestration the mass can be considered a type of missa solemnis. Fugues and fugal movements are completely missing from the Missa Admontis as is any kind of contrapuntal (including imitative) composition. In so doing, Haydn assured that the required understanding of the liturgical text would be achieved. Score available separately - see item CA.5453000.

The composer and organist Paul Siefert, baptized in Gdansk on 28 June 1586 and died there on 6 May 1666, belongs to the 'North German organ school'. Thanks to a grant of the town council of Gdansk, Siefert spent the years from 1607 until probably late 1610 studying in Amsterdam where he got important ideas and suggestions as a pupil of Sweelinck. After his return he became deputy organist in Gdansk. From 1611 to 1616 he worked as an organist first at the church in the old town of Konigsberg, then at the Warsaw court orchestra. On 23 September 1623 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Gdansk in succession to Michael Weyda where he worked until the end of his life. This edition of his organ works contains 13 fantasias, two chorale preludes and a motet as well as a detailed description of the work in the preface and in the critical report.

Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who today is becoming increasingly well known, achieved recognition during his lifetime as a composer of operas, among them the first Swedish national opera, Gustaf Wasa. In addition he wrote a large number of sacred compositions for the Court of Dresden, where he was employed for many years, including the present Missa in D minor, which was still performed well into the 20th century. This work, probably composed for Christmas in 1794, displays a decidedly pastoral character in the Gloria and Agnus Dei and moreover, is distinguished by charming solo woodwind parts. Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. From his Pater noster for soloists, choir and orchestra, written in the form of a cantata, in which the original Latin text is combined with the new German translation of the President of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, Stefan Heucke has taken an almost seven-minute German version for mixed choir and organ for practical use and newly arranged it.The text version of Norbert Lammert uses a direct and concise language which reinterprets several archaic expressions of the traditional translation: 'Dein Reich kommt, wenn dein Wille geschieht, auch auf Erden'. Stefan Heucke set the choral parts in major/minor-mode homophony in a deliberately simple way. The organ basically supports the choral setting and expands it rhythmically and harmonically now and then.

The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir. Reprint of the first edition. Friedrich Spitta recommended to Herzogenberg that he set Gerhard Tersteegen's text Gott ist Gegenwartig on the occasion of that poet's 200th birthday. Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College, Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions, including vocal music, both sacred and secular, and orchestral works before getting involved with the university's Musical Society. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge.
Part of the'Four Intermezzi Op. 189' Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known 'Londonderry Air'. The traditional Irish tune was first collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross, and is recognised all around the world by the Irish Diaspora. Duration ca. 6:20.

The cantata is one of the few surviving vocal works which Wilhelm Friedemann Bach composed during the eighteen years which he spent as organist and director of music at the Marktkirche in Halle (1746-1764). This cantata, published here for the first time in more than 250 years, was written to introduce the autumn sermons in 1752. A musically and technically demanding composition, it consists of two substantial choral movements, partly concertante and partly polyphonic, based on two biblical utterances. They surround a sensitive, while at the same time strictly contrapuntal, duet for soprano and alto with basso continuo in which God's sweet teaching for the soul is described as the true manna of the faithful, forming a link with the sermons which are to follow. In the compactness of the musical construction and its intensity of expression W. F. Bach was clearly following in the footsteps of his father in this work. Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light,' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personal comfortand solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual, artistic and intellectual. The work opens and closes with the beginning and ending of theRequiem Mass, with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum, O Nata Lux and Veni, Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in the work and includes an extended canonon et lux perpetua. In Te, Domine, Speravi contains, among other musical elements, the cantus firmus Herzliebster Jesu (from the Nuremburg Songbook, 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on fiat misericordia. O Nata Lux and Veni,Sancte Spiritus are paired songs, the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited, jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna, which reprises the openingsection of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia. --Morten Lauridsen.

Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1036400.

Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007600.

The Requiem of Gabriel Faure is now available in two versions: in the symphonic version which was completed in 1900 and in a version with small orchestra of 1889. The symphonic version of Gabriel Faure's Requiem, published in 1901, was the product of a 13-year compositional process. Starting from the original five-movement form for strings, harp and organ, the composer wrote two additional movements, one after the other, and expanded the instrumentation in various stages for later performances. The present reconstruction of a version with small orchestra differs from other such attempts in that for the first time it presents the work not in a mixed version, but rather in the unified form from 1889. This is distinguished from the final version both in musical terms, as well as through the fact that it forgoes the use of flutes, clarinets and bassoons, while employing only two horns instead of four. With a critical Report with information about the source situation and the edition, and containing the individual readings (alternative readings, etc.). Since in 1889 the Offertoire was still without the choral section the present edition contains the Offertoire of the final version as appendix. Now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731100.

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

The Reformation Symphony was composed in 1830 for the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the founding of the Lutheran confession of faith. In the fourth movement, Mendelssohn quotes, elaborates and varies artfully the Luther-chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott [God is our fortress], erecting a musical monument to the reformer Martin Luther. After an initial confl icting reception, the Reformation Symphony meanwhile is established fi rmly in the concert repertoire. EB 8058 is intended for performances with organ. It can also be used for the preparation of the chorus and soloists for performances with orchestra. With regard to the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, this version for solos, choir and organ by Torsten Sterzik originated to pave the Reformation Symphony's way into the church as well, restoring the text to Luther's chorale in the fourth movement and additionally including the third movement, its arioso solos being sung by a soprano and a tenor solo.

The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score available separately - see item CA.3111700.
