Austria ?s imperial court chapel was active far beyond the confines of Vienna . It developed a rich musical tradition of its own, with composers of the stature of Heinrich Isaac , Jacob Hassler , Johann Jacob Froberger , and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer .

This volume consists entirely of première publications from the ?uvre of composers working at the imperial court during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, including the complete keyboard output of Giovanni Valentini and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and a Toccata 2 di toni in g ( FbWV 130) by Johann Jacob Froberger.

Altogether it contains twenty-two compositions with a detailed preface, many facsimiles, and a critical commentary. The pieces range from easy to moderately difficult and are equally suitable for use in church services or concert performance.

Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. Replaces BA 5171 Volume 1 of Bach' s organ music presents some of the most frequently played organ pieces altogether. Here they appear in a new engraving based on the New Bach Edition (NBA). This updated edition takes into account the latest findings of Bach scholarship: Thus, for example, a newly-discovered copy of the first edition containing inscriptions in Bach' s own hand could be incorporated into the musical text of the Schübler Chorales. For the Orgel-Büchlein, Bach' s autograph manuscript remains the principal source. Yet a glance at its early dissemination among his pupils reveals an abundance of readings that give interested organists insights into how perhaps Bach' s most famous collection was played at that time. From 1772 onward, Mozart wrote 17 short single movement works called Epistle Sonatas , designed to be played in the Eucharist service between the Epistle and the Gospel. The Epistle Sonata in C (K.336) was the last of these, written in 1780. Shortly afterwards the Archbishop decreed that a motet or hymn should be sung instead, and they fell into disuse. The Epistle Sonata in C was originally scored for two Violins, Basso Continuo, and Baroque Organ. It has been arranged for solo Organ (with pedals) by Nigel Davison. / Orgue

Mendelssohn produced an early work for Organ in 1837, but it was a London music publishing firm who commissioned the first of his mature Organ works. The second half of the commissioned pieces are published in this volume. Mendelssohn himself saved all his manuscripts and they have survived in libraries in Berlin and Krakow, providing the subtitle of this book.Eleven movements are included here, all written in 1844 and 1845. What were originally commissioned as 'Voluntaries' were changed at the composer's request to 'Sonatas'. Whether one considers these movements as drafts and sketches or as distinct musical entities in their own right, the works are not identical to the final, printed versions. For those who appreciate or study the Mendelssohn Organ oeuvre, this volume is of immense interest.While the Organ never completely fell from grace as the instrument of church and religious music, it is the editor's belief that in the century dividing JS Bach from these works of Mendelssohn, fashion and church practice had greatly diminished its importance and few works of real note were produced. Freie Orgelwerke - BuxWV 136-153, 158. Par BUXTEHUDE DIETERICH. This edition is the result of Harald Vogel?s many years of practice as an organist and musicologist. The music text is based on a reevaluation of 17 th - and 18 th -century manuscripts containing the free organ and keyboard works by Buxtehude. They originated during a transitional phase between the traditional letter tablature and the staff notation still in use today. Since many works have survived only in transcriptions for staff notation, the editor was confronted with a high error rate, which he carefully analyzes in the ?Einzelanmerkungen?. During the preparation of the edition, the editor always kept sight of the performance practice, but still, the image of the sources is never distorted (e. g. by superfluous rests, beaming not conforming to the sources and the unhistorical adjustment of time signatures) and stays very close to the compositional notation, the letter tablature. The flexible use of three staves and the differentiated distribution of the voices on the staves allow for an approximation in reading conventions of historical notation with its resulting information about hand division. Grouping the free organ repertoire into works with obbligato pedal and works for manuals, this edition is organized in two volumes. The first subvolume (I/1, EB 9304) contains the Preface and the Preludes, whereas the second subvolume (I/2, EB 9305) contains Toccatas, Ostinato works, alternative versions and a comprehensive Critical Commentary (in German only). Volume II (EB 9306) contains Buxtehude?s free organ and keyboard works (manualiter) with the corresponding texts (Preface and Critical Commentary). Until 1971, Harald Vogel worked on a dissertation (with Georg von Dadelsen, Hamburg) on ?Die Fuge um Bach?. Besides the description of the ?inclusion? of triple measures into the C notation and the irregularities of the ?voice mutation? in the polyphonic structures, this also included a discussion about the justification of the ?inner textual criticism?. With the inner textual criticism, deviations in parallel passages are unified. The North German fugue style, reaching a peak in Buxtehude?s work, is characterized by a constant diversity of details in subject and polyphonic progressions. One of the ?indicators of the fantastic style? is the dissolution of the polyphonic structures at the ends of the fugues, evident in Buxtehude?s work. In this edition, a musical text is presented that avoids the uniformity of detail not conforming to the sources. However, there are many examples of transcription and cursory errors, which are analyzed in a methodical systematic manner. The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspired organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in eight volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe. Critical Complete Edition Of The Works Of Miloslav Kabelác V/13. Par KABELAC MILOSLAV. The four small-scale preludes of Miloslav Kabelác's op. 48 were commissioned in 1966 by the second 'Prague Spring International Music Competition” in the category organ. They are written in proportional notation, which the composer preferred ever since his Symphony No. VI of 1961. For practical reasons one of the editors, the leading Czech organist and Kabelác authority Jan Hora, has transcribed the graphic notation of the note-values into standard notation.
