Commissioned for the 2017 Montréal Organ Festival, Concordia Salus: A Fantasy for Organ received its name from the motto of the city of Montréal, of which the Latin component translates as salvation through harmony. The work divides roughly into 3 sections. The first section introduces two main contrasting themes. The second section develops the main material through a series of gestures that have an improvisatory feeling--something akin to an extended cadenza. The final section of the piece recapitulates the primary thematic material through bold, triumphant, and fanfare-like statements, culminating in a tipple forte, full organ sound.Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Distributed Composer.

This matching pair of stirring marches is the latest addition to Stainer & Bell's popular 'Light Organ' series. Joe Marsh writes with a particular flair for rhythmic heft and swing, and his work shows the great British tradition of martial music for the instrument alive and thriving in the hands of one of its most noted practitioners, who is also President of the Sunderland Theatre Organ Preservation Society.

“Toccata and Lament†was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral, Rochester, NY, USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure – a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents – already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder, a composer and professor of music theory, has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction, universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters. The heart of the piece is a dirge which, using the Baroque doctrine of the affections, relates to Eastern European cultural history in and around Vilnius, a history marked by the predations of 20th-Century war.

The northern New Mexico landscape is replete with many churches and chapels which have served for centuries as a cornerstone of faith for the indigenous and colonial peoples. Each region and place of worship has its own colorful history, often the stuff of legend. Three Chapels (for organ manuals) takes its inspiration from the lore and history surrounding some of these holy sites. Chimayó is a place of pilgrimage and healing for the sick; Acoma a place of tension and fusion between two distinct cultural theologies; and Rosario a place of great ceremony for one week of the year Published by: Zimbel Press.

Originally one of three pieces for solo organ (Trois Pièces pour Grand Orgue) Théodore Dubois, the majestic Hosannah has been arranged for organ and two trumpets by composer/arranger Richarl Siegel. The piece contrasts stately, chordal sections with more florid (but never complicated) passages, all being brought to a regal conclusion. The trumpet writing is accessible and capable. High school or other intermediate-level players will be able to perform this piece. Optional parts for timpani and cymbal are included, which will add an extra level of brilliance to this fine transcription. It is suitable for any festive celebration. As a prelude on Palm Sunday, this piece would provide a noble opening to Holy Week. As an Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday postlude, it would be a sonic reminder of Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, leading to his triumphant victory over the tomb. For Organ, Two Trumpets, optional Timpani, and Cymbals.

The formal structure of this organ chorale with solo clarinet follows a Jewish death prayer. The solo clarinet represents the chant of the traditional prayer leader while the organ plays the response of the congregation of the synagogue. The piece ends with a cadenza of the solo clarinet to which an optional organ improvisation can be added.Barbara Heller dedicated this chorale to the memory of Elke Mascha Blankenburg (1943-2013). Talking about her before the first performance, the composer said: 'She was open-hearted with a really tender soul, very trusting. Her creativity knew no limits; she was also an almost fanatical campaigner for music by women. In the music you will hear now I have attempted to convey some aspects of her personality: charming, loving, obstinate, committed, volatile, tragic, crazy, untamed, tender and anguished.' The various sections of this chorale may be performed in a correspondingly contrasting manner: searching, hesitant, visionary, focused, volatile, accusatory, hopeful, etc., with use of rubato and powerful contrasts in dynamic and tone quality.

Two Contrasts (2018) is dedicated to Timothy Miller. The two movements (which may be performed together or separately) form contrasts to each other in a number of musical ways. However, in addition to the differences, there are also connections of motivic material that link the two movements together. Sharagan refers to a style of monodic hymn in the Armenian Orthodox Church. Madrigal alternates between declamatory, expressive music and buoyant, dance-like music. The Partita, composed in 1971, is inscribed “For the Rt Hon. Edward Heath, M.P., Prime Ministerâ€. Its five movements enjoy the almost improvisatory freedom that is characteristic for Howells' writing, yet they are bound together by a kind of cyclic feeling engendered by a fairly consistent use of an original mode: it descends from C to C as follows: C, B, B flat, G, F sharp, E, E flat, C. The Partita exploits both the melodic and harmonic implications of the mode.

Karl Straube wrote to Rheinberger about his penultimate Organ Sonata, published in 1899: Your 19th Sonata made a tremendous impression on my audience. The first ballade-like movement in particular was greatly admired by the public. In the middle movement, marked Provencalisch, Rheinberger used a theme by Machaut, whilst the third movement, with its somber improvisatory-like introduction, is very convincing.

Written for the magnificent organ of Saint Sulpice in Paris, this virtuosic work is both explorative and passionate. Watkins utilises the full tessitural and dynamic range of the instrument to create a work that is at times tentative and at others fantastically, openly declamatory.

Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) was Finland's first Finnish-speaking organ virtuoso and the founder of the Finnish organ school. His compositions for organ remain at the core of Finnish organ repertoire, besides being an integral part of our cultural history: some of them reflect important events in Finnish music or society at large. Merikanto was an innovator. His organ works were the earliest extensive concert pieces written in Finland that demanded high technical proficiency and made use of the most recent developments in organ building. This critical edition of works for organ by Oskar Merikanto was edited by Jan Lehtola D.Mus., organist and Merikanto scholar.

Song of Hope, composed by Kay Johannsen the Kantor of the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart in 2016, is a Fantasia in G minor based on a six-measure melody. It is improvisatory in style and has a melancholy basic character. Over the course of the work, the melodic idea is varied rhythmically several times, and is heard in the treble, tenor and bass registers. Against a quiet basic pulse, the accompanying harmonies appear in the manuals and pedals mostly in subtly matching rhythms, reminiscent of a saxophone soloist with a discreet supporting jazz band. The dynamic of the piece grows from piano to a fundamental forte, and for the conclusion a fine pianissimo is required. Song of Hope is composed for two-manual organ, with a duration of four-and-a-half minutes. The expressive harmonies and the hidden swing of the music communicate directly with audiences, including those with less musical experience.

Composed by Jehan Alain, Three Pieces is a set of upper intermediate / advanced works for organ, with pedal-use. The first piece, ?Variations sur un theme de Clement Jannequin (Variations on a Clement Jannequin's Tune), should be played?in the same way as Couperin's Preludes: freshly and softly. It contains four distinctive parts: Affetuoso, Maggiore, Fuggato and Grave. The second piece is called ?Le jardin suspendu (The hanging garden) and features three different parts that can't be played separately. The last piece, Litanies, is quite religious and consists of the repetition of lamentations. Its introduction in vivo is played only by the right hand, then followed by a?Lirico ma sempre vivo part. These are followed by switches between the main tempo and some vivacissimo parts, sounding declamatory. This third piece ends really harmoniously. Jehan Alain is a French organist who became famous with his Suite for Organ. Student of Marcel Dupre and Roger Ducasse among others, he kept composing all his life. One of his most famous international pieces is Litanies.
