The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale preludes, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspried organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in six volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe.More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.comList of Composers

Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. Joan Cabanilles was cathedral organist in Valencia and the towering figure in Spanish organ music of the late 17th century. His brilliant and diverse musical language, rooted in the traditional sounds of Spain, has not managed to reach a large audience outside the Iberian peninsula, although he is often called “a musician of European statureâ€. The aim of this three-volume Urtext edition is to grant access to his most appealing works. To this end, all available sources in the libraries of Astorga, Barcelona, San Lorenzo de el Escoreal, Felanitx/Mallorca, Jaca and Montserrat have been examined and newly evaluated. If Cabanilles’s oeuvre consists primarily of tientos, organ hymns and versets, the third and final volume contains three versos, three pasacalles, two galliards, two toccatas and such special forms as Paseos de tercer tono, Diferencias de FolÃas and a Jácara.„This is an excellent resource for organists interested in exploring this satisfying repertoire.“ (Brian E. Harlow, Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians 1/2018)

This volume presents 64 Pastorale compositions for organ (harpsichord/pianoforte) of the 18th century from Germany, Bohemia, Austria and South Tyrol. Charming melodies shaped by natural notes, bordoun basses, a lyrical-cheerful or sensitive tone - these are some of the common characteristics of the works in this collection. Several of them are connected to the custom of the Kindlwiegen or cradle song. Those in search of new discoveries will also find a number of first editions here. Almost all of the pieces can be played manualiter and range from easy to moderate level of difficulty. Together, both Pastorale volumes display an impressive kaleidoscope of the different national characteristics of the pastorale and offer a rich repertoire for organists, not only at Christmas time.

Variations on a Theme of Haydn (2017) was written for organist Christoph Hintermuller who asked for a work based on the national anthem of Germany. The anthem's tune was written in 1797 by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). (In English-speaking countries, Haydn's tune is sung as the hymn AUSTRIAN HYMN, usually with John Newton's text Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.) The music consists of five contrasting variations plus a recapitulation of the opening variation. The first variation is broad and festive; the second variation is pastoral in character; the third has a scherzando character; the fourth is marked hypnotic and atmospheric; and the fifth is a quasi-musette. The first variation returns as a finale before a brief coda. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The three movement Concerto da chiesa is the last organ work by Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984), composed a few months before his death. The premiere was performed by Clemens Ganz, then organist at the Cathedral of Cologne, in memory of the esteemed teacher and college colleague. The three-movement composition is an unmistakable 'Schroeder' work: emphasis of linearity according to high baroque standards, conciseness and sometimes impulsive gestures of the themes and rhythms, layers of parallel chords within a freely tonal modern harmony, not forgetting the plasticity of form and the motor functions which are surprisingly energetic for an eighty-year-old.

This volume contains three evocative pieces for organ. They were written as individual works and are not a suite, although there may be contexts where it would be fine to perform more than one of them within the same program. The decision was made to publish them together because they all involve varying degrees of freedom and non-traditional notation.Organ Duration: 20' Composed: 2023 Published by: Zimbel Press.

In composing Celestial Wind, Sirota was inspired to write a brilliant toccata based upon Acts 2:2-3: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven of a rushing and mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Sirotas aim was not merely to imitate the sound of rushing wind and flames, as to evoke the sense of awe and ecstasy that must have been felt by Jesus disciples at this manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

Schneider's Organ Symphony No. 1 is in the tradition of the French organ symphonies (Widor, Vierne, Durufle). With its general tendency from the desperate dark to the comforting bright, the symphony brings up the air of the praying and pleading of suffering people as a theme. The 'pater noster' as archetype of the prayer is cited in all movements.
