The Four Quiet Voluntaries include a sprightly allegretto, a lyrical air, a lilting pastorale and variation and a theme on an Irish air. They fall within the abilities of moderately accomplished musicians.Eric Thiman was a 20th century composer, teacher and Organist who was also an advocate of amateur music-making. He was a prolific composer of church music and Piano and Organ works, and his craftsmanship and gift for melody were much admired. He was director of music at the City Temple in London. As an educator, he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and he wrote many books on harmony, counterpoint and musical form.

Being a fascinatingly unique composer, Olivier Messiaen pushed the conventions of composing to its very limits. The composer''s music remains ever-popular and The Technique of my Musical Language provides the key and necessary knowledge into the study of his delightful music. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of 11, where he won many prizes. As a passionate ornithologist, as well as organist and composer, many of Messiaen''s works depict bird song. His music is rhythmically complex and harmonically and melodically distinct, often using modes of limited transposition. It is for these reasons that the composer compiled The Technique of my Musical Language. The book contains text with musical examples, describing unique elements of his music, such as ametrical music, his rhythmic notations and his modes of limited transposition, among many others. For all fans of Messiaen, The Technique of my Musical Language is essential to the understanding of the composer''s much loved music..

Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College, Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions, including vocal music, both sacred and secular, and orchestral works before getting involved with the university's Musical Society. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge.
