In his Organ Symphony No. 8 'In Memoriam', following an idea of the cathedral organist Silvius von Kessel from Erfurt (and dedicatee of the work), Enjott Schneider carries on where Anton Bruckner left off, processes themes from the latter's Symphony No. 8 variatively and contrasts it to 'Haus-Choral des Erfurter Doms', 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme'. Bruckner's material is used as a starting point and further developed by Schneider in four movements: typically enough, the initial movement is called 'Metamorphosen' before an almost eerie atmosphere is created in a 'Scherzo sinistro'. The twelve-note series (in the third movement), embedded in a transcendental mood, eventually develops into the chorale which, now as main theme of the finale, amalgamates with Bruckner's stylistic moments and leads to a magnificent end - an exciting and rousing piece of music.

Written in the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Malcolm Archer reflects the mood of national celebration in his new march for organ The Royal Standard. The title alludes to the famous emblem of royalty that flies proudly over Buckingham Palace when the sovereign is in residence. Befitting its subject, this stirring music is in the high ceremonial style of Elgar and Walton, as colourful as the royal banner in blue, red and gold, but with a modern flavour too in its syncopated main theme. Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College, Malcolm Archer needs no introduction as a church musician, conductor, composer and recitalist. The piece is of intermediate standard, and is suitable for a variety of instruments with two manuals and pedals.

Organist Richard Hills introduces this reissue of a neglected Edwardian classic with a timely note on performance-style, the composer and his works. Varied in colour and mood, and written with an idiomatic command of the instrument, these Three Impromptus reinforce the impression of Coleridge-Taylor not only as a versatile presence on the Edwardian scene, but also as a composer whose music is an enduring part of our British musical heritage.

The three movements that make up Nocturnes, Book I are programmatic pieces that take as their points of departure a painting, the rhythms of a great city, and a poem. 1. The Starry Night is a written down improvisation based on Vincent van Goghs famous picture of the same name. The tonal material is a quite literal transformation of the visual elements of the painting: the melismatic cadenzas mirror van Goghs swirling starlight, and the powerful chords were suggested by the sinister trees that shoot upward to puncture the skys patterns. 2. Stovers Rag is a product of the ragtime revival of the early 1970s, when many composers tried their hand at writing concert rags. The New York night, which was not without its sinister element in those days, is expressed in an updating of the classic ragtime format. The piece looks backward as well, with the old French Baroque basse de trompette making an appearance in the trio section. 3. The Song of Shadows taps the nostalgic mood typical of the poetry of Walter de la Mare. The poem of the same name pictures a lone musician on a winter night, an dog sleeping before a sinking fire, and, at the end, the spirits that are summoned by music. The opening melody, played on an 8 flute with tremulant, suggests the blues-tinged sound of an alto saxophone, and throughout the movement the organs capacity for sustained tone is used to suggest and atmosphere of dreamy timelessness. The pieces were written in 1971 and first performed on July 2, 1972 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, with the composer at the console.

Few baroque composers were ever able to create work as sunny, as joyous as Vivaldi did in this beloved Gloria. The contrast of mood throughout the work as it moves through the drama of the Mass to its satisfying double final movement shows the composer at the height of his powers.Vivaldi composed this work in Venice in about 1715, during his fruitful time at the Ospedale della Pieta. In his lifetime this priest, composer and virtuoso Violinist achieved enormous musical success. Considering his great popularity in the modern era, it is difficult to believe that public appreciation of his work declined after his death and that the Gloria languished undiscovered forcenturies. It wasn't until 1957 that the restored work was heard again in its entirety. Since that time, this moving and joyous Gloria has been recorded more than one hundred times and perennially appears on concert series around the world.

Concerto in One Movement for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (“Alaska”) was written for Madeline Schatz and the Arctic Chammber Orchestra. In one movement, the moods and tempos shift from a broad sustained beginning to a lively and rhythmic section, followed by a quiet, slower middle section. A brief organ cadenza introduces an extended, again lively and rhythmic final section. Although the organ is prevalent almost throughout, there are also important statements and colorations in the orchestra. One may recognize a few borrowed musical references: a rhythmic patter of the Inuit; the first phrase of the “Passion Chorale” from the 16th century composer Hans Leo Hassler; and the traditional Hebrew melody, “Yigdal.”.

Three Autumn Sketches after a Watercolor by Maria Willscher (2017) are dedicated to Hans-Peter Bahr. The music is inspired by a watercolor painting by Maria (Neumann) Willscher (1922-1998) entitled Herbststimmung. The three movements explore moods and colors of autumn as reflected in the painting. In the first movement, Herbststimmung (Autumn Mood), a musical line falls under gentle undulation. A central section is a wistful chorale. The second movement, Herbstfarben (Autumn Colors), reflects on the subtle variety and gradations of autumn colors with constantly shifting armonic colors. The final movement, Sonnenuntergang (Sunset), is inspired by the serenely beautiful colors of an autumn sunset, imagining the sun's departing rays illuminating the autumn landscape. Mr. Stube's many years as organist show in the colorful registration and comfortable writing for the hands and feet. The Passacaglia theme uses all 12 chromatic tones in a neo-romantic lyrical style that is sustained throughout the work. The textures are transparent, but indeed the movement builds to a satisfying climax and tapers down to a quiet ending. The Toccata is great fun rhythmically, and poses a challenge to the organist with a nimble pedal technique. A contrasting lyrical theme provides a contrast of mood and color and the work ends with an unusual calm.

Overture to Uncle Vanya (2022) is an overture to an imaginary opera based on the play of the same name (publ. 1898) by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov (1860-1904). The music is not directly programmatic but rather, in the typical manner of an overture, ruminates in a compact form on moods, themes, scenes, and characters from the play itself. Actual opera overtures have historically had their own life as independent concert pieces, and thus the attempt here is to present an atmospheric picture, even without an opera or play following it.Organ Duration: 9' Composed: 2022 Published by: Zimbel Press.
