Organ Symphony No. 2 (2017) was written for and is dedicated to German organist Philip Hartmann. In all of my works that employ larger-scale forms (not just organ compositions), I am continually looking for different ways of providing the form and structure. My first organ symphony (2013) comprised three larger movements that charted a progression from dark to light. By contrast, this second organ symphony comprises 12 shorter movements that together build a larger structure out of varied emotional states. Although the movements are different in character, there are connections of harmony and motive across them. One goal behind this work is that it be suitable for effective performance on almost any organ, small or large. Most organ symphonies require a large instrument. By contrast, this piece can be played effectively on even a small organ with a limited number of stops (even a one manual organ with an octave pedal board). It can also be very effective on a large symphonic organ with many different colors and a huge tutti. Registration is left to the performer's discretion, and the organist is strongly encouraged to use the full extent of whatever resources are available. Commissioned for the 2017 Montréal Organ Festival, Concordia Salus: A Fantasy for Organ received its name from the motto of the city of Montréal, of which the Latin component translates as salvation through harmony. The work divides roughly into 3 sections. The first section introduces two main contrasting themes. The second section develops the main material through a series of gestures that have an improvisatory feeling--something akin to an extended cadenza. The final section of the piece recapitulates the primary thematic material through bold, triumphant, and fanfare-like statements, culminating in a tipple forte, full organ sound.Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2017 Published by: Distributed Composer.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. However, his prominence within the organ repertoire remains absolute with sublime works, including his Variations on a Noel. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's Op. 20, the Variations on a Noel for organ was composed in 1922. It is based on an old Noel (Pastorale) in D minor. The variations displays contrast through tonality, rhythm, timbre and harmony, among other aspects. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Variations on a Noel is no exception.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

Born in 1965, Thierry Escaich studied in Paris where he obtained eight first prizes for Organ and Composition. His performances and works during his professional career have also received various distinctions, Three Sketches for Organ being no exception. Composed in 1991, Three Sketches is very modern, exploiting tonality, rhythm, harmony, and many other elements to a virtuosic level. Esciach's is a great improvisation expert and Three Sketches reflects aspects of this through use of complex rhythms and developed melodies. With a typical performance lasting around 11 minutes, the Three Sketches are called, 1) Tournament, 2) Ritual, and 3) Variations on a Memory. For all advanced organists seeking to vary and expand their contemporary repertoire, Esciach's Three Sketches is an exciting addition to the repertoire..

Dedicated to Joseph Bonnet who was the organist of the St Eustache Church in Paris, this piece is quite difficult (upper intermediate/advanced level) and requires the use of different keyboard divisions and pedals. Lasting around 16 minutes, this wonderful work is quite architectural and will astonish you by its grandeur. It is the perfect piece to include in a recital. Joseph Jongen was a Belgian organist, composer and professor of harmony and counterpoint. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome and composed numerous pieces including music chamber works, symphonies, concertos and songs. His most famous piece is the Symphonie Concertante (1926).

Bednall's creation, rooted in the tradition of French organ improvisation, tenderly evokes the mysterious beauty of Wells Cathedral's remarkable 'Jesse Window'. The radiant music ebbs and flows calmly, moving through freely expressive passages of rich harmony, before closing with gentle murmurs at the top of the instrument.

As part of the Hannenheim Edition, the pianist Moritz Ernst also presents, in addition to the anthology of all the surviving piano sonatas of Arnold Schoenberg's master-class pupil, the edition of Hannenheim's two previously known organ works. The early Phantasieis imbued with a late Romantic harmony interspersed with chromaticisms, which reveal influences of Wagner and Strauss, but also of French organ romanticism. More typical of Hannenheim's personal style is the classical three-movement Sonata with its all-pervading serial technique; the last movement presents itself as an extensive passacaglia with 10 variations and is steeped in complex polyphony.

Following its edition of the beautiful Messe Sainte Cecile by Gounod in an arrangement for Coro SA and organ (CV 27.025), Carus presents a further sacred work by this composer: his Te Deum for soli, choir, two harps and two organs (choir organ and great organ). As Peter Kaiser, the editor, has expressed in his foreword, this work from 1886 realizes a strict, almost ascetic musical language, an inward awe and praise of God.. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2332600.
