Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms harmony and melodies  L'Ascension for Organ is no exception to the composer's popular distinctive style. L'Ascension was originally composed for orchestra by Messiaen in 1932-1933. The composer described the work as Four Symphonic Meditations and the sections are; 1) Majesty of Christ praying that His Father should glorify Him 2) Serene Alleluias from a soul longing for Heaven 3) Alleluia on the Trumpet Alleluia on the Cymbal and 4) Prayer from Christ ascending towards HisFather. Messiaen arranged L'Ascensionfor solo Organ a year later. The first second and fourth movements are arrangements of the orchestral version however the composer created a new third movement; Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ which is its own glory. L'Ascension is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

Neuf méditations pour orgue-Written in four volumes ?La Nativit? Du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen was written in 1935 and depicts his Roman Catholic faith. Written for Organ this piece is considered “one of the great Organ works of all time” and as a real masterpiece as said by R. F. Goldman the American composer. Divided into nine movements each of which portrays a concept related to the birth of Jesus: 1. La vierge et l'enfant (The Virgin and Child) 2. Les bergers (The Shepherds) 3. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

As a famous contributor to classical Organ music César Franck's (1822-1890) catalogue is extensive. Moreover being an organist himself his Organ Works are significant and remain ever-popular to this day. When French organist Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) compiled the series of Franck's Organ Works it was well-received and to this day remains popular with all organists. The second volume includes a favoured selection of Franck's works including a Pastoral Prayer and Finale.
