Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

Each of the pieces in this distinctive collection by David Kidwell is a mash-up of two hymns presented in creative combination. Some of the hymn pairings share a liturgical season, some share a subject, and some share similar musical traits. Across the settings, the hymns are heard both separately and then in simultaneous combination.

This version of Cortege and Litanie by Marcel Dupré was written for organ. For upper intermediate players, this 8 page composition is written with 4 sharps and includes the use of the pedals. The piece, initially written for a small orchestra in 1922, was created for a play. Dupré integrated it into one of his piano recitals and was later asked to arrange it for other instruments. These scores therefore exist also arranged for piano, orchestra (in 4 and 16) and for the conductor. In terms of composition, the piece is divided into two: “Cortege,” which title describes a solemn procession, begins in E major and lasts twice as long as the introductory theme; and “Litanie,” which is describing the prayer sung during a procession and which follows the “Cortege” part to then be joined by it. Marcel Dupré is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the work of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Messiaen, Langlais and Cochereau among others.

Chen Yi describes her dramatic study in the organ’s sonorities: “From the bronze drum set on topof the totem pole, I imagine that our ancestors played the powerful low percussion instrument,to unify the rhythm in their group dance; from the delicate and magical decorations carved onthe drum and the pole, I imagine that the beauty of the totem poles is presented in multilayerswith various timbres from different manuals (keyboards) and pedals, and the ineffable universe isharmonized in the powerful and brilliant grand chords fully sounded from the organ.†The publicationincludes registrations, fingerings, and pedaling provided by James Higdon. TOTEM POLES wascommissioned by the American Guild of Organists for its 2018 biennial national convention. The primitive power and the spiritual mysteries of the ancient totem poles are permeated into the rich palette, and brought out from the sonic giant, the solo organ. From the bronze drum set on top of the totem pole, I imagine that our ancestors played the powerful low percussion instrument, to unify the rhythm in their group dance; from the delicate and magical decorations carved on the drum and the pole, I imagine that the beauty of the totem poles is presented in multilayers with various timbres from different manuals (keyboards) and pedals, and the ineffable universe is harmonized in the powerful and brilliant grand chords fully sounded from the organ.

Two Contrasts (2018) is dedicated to Timothy Miller. The two movements (which may be performed together or separately) form contrasts to each other in a number of musical ways. However, in addition to the differences, there are also connections of motivic material that link the two movements together. Sharagan refers to a style of monodic hymn in the Armenian Orthodox Church. Madrigal alternates between declamatory, expressive music and buoyant, dance-like music. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 8' Composed: 2018 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Sonatina No. 2 (2013) is dedicated to Robert Behrman. The opening toccata consists of bouncy and vibrant music surrounding a lyric chorale. The title of the second movement, Sharagan, refers to a style of monodic hymn in the Armenian Orthodox Church. The third movement is a gigue indebted to Buxtehude, though with a contemporary harmonic flavor. Sonatina No. 3 (2014) is dedicated to Johan-Magnus Sjoberg. The opening movement is an ostinato (quasi-passacaglia) with a heavily syncopated theme. The second movement, Dirge, is quiet and expressive, with a rising scalar figure in the bass that increases in speed. The final movement is a dancing toccatina with a bit of a scherzando character. (Both of these sonatinas can be played with manuals only. Optional pedal suggestions are provided in a few places.) Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 14'30 Composed: 2013-14 Published by: Zimbel Press.

The Partita, composed in 1971, is inscribed “For the Rt Hon. Edward Heath, M.P., Prime Ministerâ€. Its five movements enjoy the almost improvisatory freedom that is characteristic for Howells' writing, yet they are bound together by a kind of cyclic feeling engendered by a fairly consistent use of an original mode: it descends from C to C as follows: C, B, B flat, G, F sharp, E, E flat, C. The Partita exploits both the melodic and harmonic implications of the mode.

Robert Helmschrott, born in 1938, was professor at the Munich Musikhochschule where he was also headmaster from 1995-2003. He wrote numerous choral and orchestral works and is one of the most important German representatives of contemporary church music. His work 'Salut' is a one-movement concert piece which is rewarding for both players. After a lengthy introduction for solo trumpet, both instruments present fireworks of brilliant idiomatic figurations, yet also make sure that pensive, lyrical tones get their fair share too. A rewarding concert piece of ca. 8 minutes' duration.
