Modern and Contemporary Music. Par . Now finally in English too: The third part of the organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing follows on from part two with contributions by Guy Bovet (on Jehan Alain), Hans-Ola Ericsson, Anders Ekenberg, Markus Rupprecht (Olivier Messiaen), Hans Fagius (Maurice Duruflé), Jeremy Filsell (Marcel Dupré), Bernhard Haas (Arnold Schönberg, Ernst Krenek, John Cage, György Ligeti, and others, plus the latest developments) and Armin Schoof (neoclassicism). As in the first two parts of the organ method, here too a representative selection of composers is discussed. Alongside mainly personal recollections (e.g. from Hans Fagius) there are analytical essays (including by Jeremy Filsell). Bernhard Haas has organised one section of his text as an introduction to the playing techniques and aesthetics of new music, beginning with pieces which are easy to play. This English edition contains new chapters by Kevin Bowyer (The Development of New Organ Music in Britain / Contemporary Organ Music in North America). Laukvik?s organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing has now become established as a standard work. It is aimed at organists who want to incorporate the latest thinking on historical performance practice into their interpretations of works. The three volumes provide a practical introduction in a detailed, scholarly and comprehensible form, by giving organists as precise a picture of the interpretative traditions and aims of previous and modern/ contemporary eras as possible. The editions are aimed not only at organists, but also at organ teachers who are looking for a manual to use in their teaching. / Date parution : 2022-05-03/ Recueil / Orgue

Louis Vierne (1870-1937) studied privately with Cesar Franck and was appointed titulaire organist at Notre-Dame (Paris) in 1900. Numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA made him well-known outside France.Vierne?s Organ works are masterpieces of Organ music and are firm favourites in the virtuoso Organ repertoire. In particular Vierne raised the form of the Organ symphony to a stylistic peak. The famous collection of ?Pieces de Fantaisie? comprising 24 fantasy pieces in four volumes (Livres I-IV) has become internationally known. With their varying degrees of difficulty the pieces are suitable for bothprofessional organists as well as advanced pupils and students. The collection comprises mainly individual movements which are suitable for use on many different types of occasion. The ?Pieces en style libre pour orgue ou harmonium? comprising 24 pieces in two volumes are shorter and technically easier. Belgian Organist composer Organ reformer and teacher Guy Weitz was born in Verviers and studied in Paris but fled to London in 1914 at the outbreak of war where he lived the rest of his life. A brilliantly accomplished and respected Organist he was personal Organist to the Archbishop of Westminster and for fifty years was the Organist at the Farm Street Church in Mayfair London.By most accounts he was tricky irascible person who wrote demanding post-Romantic music mostly in the French style including two symphonies for Organ. In Paradisum is one of his lesser-known works beginning in C minor with a series of rising motifs to arrive at a tranquil middle interludescored entirely in the bass clef and ending with an untimed bar of pianissimo echo viole and voix celeste figures before returnting to tempo primo and Orchestral textures. It is a piece that requires some application to get to the heart of perhaps not unlike the composer.

When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.

The “Little Organ Book” perhaps the most celebrated collection ever...(+)
The “Little Organ Book” perhaps the most celebrated collection ever of chorale preludes owes its title to J.S. Bach’s application for the post of Cantor at St Thomas’ Church in Leipzig. Lacking an academic degree Bach wanted to demonstrate his qualifications as a teacher through his compositions – including his Inventions Sinfonias and the “Well Tempered Klavier”. This also led him to append a misleading title to the most ambitious project of his time at Weimar: he called this collection of chorale preludes - originally meant to number 164 pieces - pieces for an “aspiring organist”. In fact the44 completed compositions of the “Little Organ Book” are demanding masterpieces which give an impressive display of the full range of the so-called short chorale prelude. This new critical edition returns for the first time to the format of the principal sources dating from Bach’s time in that most of the pieces are reproduced on two systems rather than three.
