French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. His Complete Study of the Fugue is an excellent introduction to the important technique. The book is in two parts, the second giving focus to elements such as the subject, the coda, modulations, the pedal, and structure, amongst other aspects. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Complete Study of the Fugue is no exception.

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Following its edition of the beautiful Messe Sainte Cecile by Gounod in an arrangement for Coro SA and organ (CV 27.025), Carus presents a further sacred work by this composer: his Te Deum for soli, choir, two harps and two organs (choir organ and great organ). As Peter Kaiser, the editor, has expressed in his foreword, this work from 1886 realizes a strict, almost ascetic musical language, an inward awe and praise of God.. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2332600.

The Mass with Christmas hymns, Missa carminum is available from Carus in a orchestra version and in a version for choir and organ. The unique feature of this work is that each movement of the Ordinary employs a well-known Christmas hymn as an instrumental cantus firmus. In the score the text of each hymn has been included in the appropriate passage, so that the Christmas signature tune may be performed vocally, for example, by a one-part children's choir. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.9193300.

The present publication finally closes the gap in the availability of the three church oratorios of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900). With this late work, which he considered his most important, Heinrich von Herzogenberg set the musical high point of the 15th Conference of the German Church Song Association in Strasbourg (1899), and also of his entire career. The celebration of the harvest provides an interesting look into the stylistic diversity of church music at the end of the 19th century, and shows the composer's aptitude for dramatic presentation in a special way. Reprint of the first edition. Friedrich Spitta recommended to Herzogenberg that he set Gerhard Tersteegen's text Gott ist Gegenwartig on the occasion of that poet's 200th birthday. Besides the obbligato organ, Herzogenberg restricted the instrumentation to strings, two trumpets, three trombones and timpani, and thus achieved a majestic quality which corresponds to the text. Carus published the original version of Bruckner's Te Deum for soloists, choir and large orchestra (Carus 27.190) in the fall of 2015. In order to make this work available for performance by smaller-sized ensembles [und einem weiteren Benutzerkreis zuganglich zu machen] Carus now presents it in an arrangement for brass quintet and organ. The brass parts are orientated essentially towards those in Bruckner's orchestral version, while the organ part follows the original string parts. [Damit kann nun auch unter eingeschrankten Bedingungen dieses grossartige Werk in einer adaquaten, stimmigen Form zur Auffuhrung gebracht werden.] As the voice parts (soloists and choir) in this reduced version are identical with those of the original the vocal score and choral score of the latter version can be used. This work is available (in the original version) in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Charles Gounod composed this Requiem under the impact of the death of his four-year-old grandson, Maurice. According to information handed down, while finishing the details of this work he was overtaken by death. It was published posthumously in various constellations by his pupil, Henri Busser, but the only complete version from the pen of Gounod is the version for large orchestra, which is published here for the first time in a critical edition. Gounod's Requiem, unlike many contemporary settings of the Mass of the Dead, is not characterized by darkness and terror. Rather, with all of its trepidation - expressed through a marked chromaticism - an atmosphere of hopeful expectation, of trust in the grace and equity of the divine judge predominates. This confidence finds its expression in the choice of the fundamental key of C major, which is rather unusual for a requiem. The work was given an impressive performance on the occasion of the first anniversary of Gounod's death in the Parisian church of Sainte-Madeleine under the direction of Gabriel Fauré and it was highly acclaimed by the contemporary press. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2731500.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming from the heart, was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections. The leading Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4068900.

When Joseph Haydn assumed the position as music director of the Court of Esterhazy in 1766, following the death of his predecessor, Gregor Joseph Werner, he began by composing his first and most extensive Missa solemnis. The title Missa Cellensis (later also known as the Cecilian Mass) and the date of an autograph score suggest that this work was probably commissioned by Prince Nicolaus Esterhazy for the 600th anniversary of the pilgrimage church Mariazell located in Styria. With regard to the scoring as well as form, this Mass is still in the tradition of the late baroque number mass. In contrast to previous mixed versions based on various sources, the new edition follows the authentic (original) version using the most reliable sources. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4060400.

Man that is born of woman hath but a short time to live is one of the central biblical texts dealing with the transitoriness of human existence. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. For a performance this piece could easily be combined with the Salve Regina by Pietro Cassati (Carus 27.703) from the Vienna series. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2770500.

The names of Michael Haydn's masses are associated either with a specific commission or with the composition's dedicatee. Thus, Haydn composed the Missa in honorem Sti. Gotthardi, also known as the Admont Mass, for the Admont Abbey located in the region of Styria, Austria, where Gotthard Kuglmayr was the Abbot. The mass combines formal concentration with liturgical function. The songlike melody, the unity of the motivic material, and the balanced harmony of solemn and lyrical passages show how intensively Haydn concerned himself with the genre. Due to its length and its orchestration the mass can be considered a type of missa solemnis. Fugues and fugal movements are completely missing from the Missa Admontis as is any kind of contrapuntal (including imitative) composition. In so doing, Haydn assured that the required understanding of the liturgical text would be achieved. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5453000.
