Often listeners respond very well to settings that demonstrate a sense of humor and fun without being irreverent. David Schelat walks that tightrope admirably in this collection of hymn tune arrangements. There is a variety of moods and techniques here, as well as a few that present more challenges than others (LLANFAIR, for example, which has pedal flourishes). A great new collection to have around.

Lovely and imaginative, this is a further example of Davide Mutti's gifts as a composer. Each verse is treated differently, with the middle one more chromatic in harmony. The organ is used in a colorful manner.

In the tradition of French toccatas, David Halls has written a brilliant showpiece for concert or voluntary. A contrasting central section is rich harmonically and contrasts with the flow of sixteenths in the outer sections. Demands a fine technique, but worth the practice!

Kuhnau's Magnificat in C major is - apart from his Biblical Sonatas - considered to be his most ambitious and best known work. However, as recent research has revealed, there are indeed many other large-scale works among his oeuvre which are largely presumed lost today, apart from those that were published as first editions. Until now, only insufficient or erroneous editions of the Magnificat have been available, a piano reduction has not been available at all. Beyond that, editor David Erler has succeeded in tracking down new evidence on the authorship of four Laudes (insertion movements for performances over Christmas) and to carry out their altogether new placement in the main work. He was able to prove that Bach's Magnificat directly succeeded Kuhnaus's work and that the use of such Laudes was common in Leipzig's parish churches and beyond.

Like telling a story, David Cherwien has crafted a five-movement partita that highlights the text of each stanza of this well-loved hymn by Susan Palo Cherwien with the original tune SURGE ECCLESIA by Timothy J. Strand. The second movement tells of wafting incense, and the aria of the fourth movement cleverly includes the hymn melody in retrograde, highlighting the text Rise, remember well the future. The final movement is a joyful and festive toccata. The five movements can be played in sequence or as standalone pieces during worship.

This useful anthology of hymn partitas and variations is the work of six composers: David Lasky, Douglas E. Wagner, David P. Dahl, Edward Landin, Robert F. Swift, and Andrew Senn. Each composer writes in a distinct style and has chosen a familiar hymn tune as the basis for their work. In their entirety, each partita is suitable for use in recital or as an extended service prelude. For shorter service voluntaries, individual variations may be excerpted or combined.
