As is the case with 'Trauermusik', there now exists an organ version of its sister work. Heribert Breuer, choir director and professor in Berlin, arranged the score for the organ, thus opening up further possibilities for this expressive piece. It is perfectly suitable for church concerts and can be performed without great difficulty.

Pedals only and Large Tam-Tam. The Kraken is a work for organ pedals with the player also playing a large tam-tam (or the player could also be joined by a percussionist.) It is based upon the poem by the same name by Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892.) The Kraken is a mythical Norse sea monster. The opening lines of the poem give the setting for the music, which starts on the lowest possible pitches and works upward to a frenzy in both instruments: Below the thunders of the upper deep, Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea, His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep The Kraken sleepeth.

The three movements that make up Nocturnes, Book I are programmatic pieces that take as their points of departure a painting, the rhythms of a great city, and a poem. 1. The Starry Night is a written down improvisation based on Vincent van Goghs famous picture of the same name. The tonal material is a quite literal transformation of the visual elements of the painting: the melismatic cadenzas mirror van Goghs swirling starlight, and the powerful chords were suggested by the sinister trees that shoot upward to puncture the skys patterns. 2. Stovers Rag is a product of the ragtime revival of the early 1970s, when many composers tried their hand at writing concert rags. The New York night, which was not without its sinister element in those days, is expressed in an updating of the classic ragtime format. The piece looks backward as well, with the old French Baroque basse de trompette making an appearance in the trio section. 3. The Song of Shadows taps the nostalgic mood typical of the poetry of Walter de la Mare. The poem of the same name pictures a lone musician on a winter night, an dog sleeping before a sinking fire, and, at the end, the spirits that are summoned by music. The opening melody, played on an 8 flute with tremulant, suggests the blues-tinged sound of an alto saxophone, and throughout the movement the organs capacity for sustained tone is used to suggest and atmosphere of dreamy timelessness. The pieces were written in 1971 and first performed on July 2, 1972 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, with the composer at the console.

Rather than leave the best wine to the end for once, I mention first a fine Adagio by Leslie Betteridge... which would make a splendid piece for any elegaic occasion or memorial service. Loosely based on two plainsong themes, one of which is the opening from Missa pro Defunctis Introit, this rhapsodical work builds up to an exciting climax, and is not too difficult: the writing is warm and rich, and organ colour needs to be exploited , although the instrument need not be large. --RSCM Church Music Quarterly.

The Rottenburg Toccata develops the choral melody of 'Sankt Martin, dir ist anvertraut' in the virtuosic style of french romantic toccatas. The work is articulated in three sections with contrasted textures: opening variation of the melody with sextuplet figurations, middle variation with a peasant rhythmicalcharacter in the minor mode and conclusion presenting the choral melody on the pedal.

Of Things Hoped For begins with a modest arching phrase, supported by a descending pedal line. The ensuing meditation develops a new melismatic idea along with toccata elements, leading to a grand statement. A dance follows, based on the melisma, which stretches and flips the material. The little bass line from the opening re-asserts itself as a soprano tune, first in a quiet B-major episode, then triumphantly and in D major in the trumpet. Thomas was commissioned to write this work by Marilyn Biery in honor of James Biery's birthday in 2001; it was premiered by James in May, 2001, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul, MN.

This voluntary is based on what is arguably the most famous of Easter hymns in the Western Christian Church – Jesus Christ is Risen Today. Taken from a collection of various hymns and tunes entitled Lyra Davidica (1708), the Easter Hymn is used as the springboard for a rhapsodic opening and development before a full and ravishing harmonization of the entire hymn. The conclusion, an extension of the tune itself, calls for a volcanic organ registration, sure to elicit an eruptive outcry appropriate to the day itself! .

A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is the second of two Hailstork organ works composed as variations on the British hymn tune Dundee. The present work begins with a carillon-like ostinato on the hymn’s opening phrase, which returns joyously toward the end of the composition. While the hymn itself is not specific to Nativity, the composer gave this work a Christmas title due to its bell-like cheer.A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is based on a larger single-movement piece written for the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia. That earlier work, A Dundee Fantasy, was commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church. That major concert piece, based on the hymn tune Dundee, was premiered by Alan Morrison.Several small units left over from drafts of A Dundee Fantasee suggested Christmas to me because of the carillon-style ostinato at the beginning that returns grandly at the end. The joyous momentum throughout the whole composition makes this vigil suitable for a Christmas Season concert.

A majestic fanfare gives way to the melody played on the solo Great. A flowing interlude follows in a minor key on the Swell strings, building to a restatement of the opening material, a full maestoso setting of the melody with big crashing chords, and again, the fanfare material to close the voluntary.
