Franz Schubert’s popular German Mass of 1827 follows in the footsteps of Michael Haydn’s work Deutsches Hochamt by turning to a German translation of the Ordinary mass. Its homophonic texture and largely syllabic setting of the words make it more accessible to lay choruses than Schubert’s masses in Latin an advantage reinforced by its diatonic melodic writing and constantly slow tempos.The present edition reproduces the Urtext from the New Schubert Edition and presents the definitive second version for chorus and wind instruments. Franz Schubert’s song Ave Maria is among his very most famous works and one of the best-loved works of he classical repertoire. In this version published by the Spanish Musical Union in 1945 the song has been adapted for solo Piano and the key transposed from B flat to C.Schubert’s Ave Maria was originally composed in 1825 as one of seven songs created from the epic poem The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott written to set the German translation of the work. The song was fairly quickly adapted for the words of the Catholic prayer Ave Maria and the Schubert melody is now frequently performed in the religious context.

This important variation cycle was written in the year of Schubert???s death 1828 by Rinck who had studied with the Bach pupil Kittel. The date of composition places it firmly in the organ repertoire of the Romantic period. It is particularly suitable as a light-hearted encore piece but can be equally rewarding as part of any concert programme or even in a liturgical context at Christmas time. This is now the only available edition of the work and is based on the first edition in the collection of the Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek Darmstadt.
