Two Contrasts (2018) is dedicated to Timothy Miller. The two movements (which may be performed together or separately) form contrasts to each other in a number of musical ways. However, in addition to the differences, there are also connections of motivic material that link the two movements together. Sharagan refers to a style of monodic hymn in the Armenian Orthodox Church. Madrigal alternates between declamatory, expressive music and buoyant, dance-like music. Leopold Hofmann, Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna from 1772 to 1793, where W. A. Mozart was his church music assistant, also set this strongly expressive text. Hofmann's setting, in C minor, offers an austere harmony, characterized by suspensions in a homophonic, through-composed four-part vocal setting (soloists or SATB choir), reinforced only by two trombones and organ continuo. Four concise instrumental transitional passages between the individual verses relieve the pathos laden Viennese church style of this composition. With its tragic air, in some passages it closely resembles Mozart's Requiem K. 626. For this first edition, the two trombone parts are available both in the original clef and in alto clef. The figured bass has been realized so that the piece can also be performed without trombones, with only organ accompaniment. French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a student of César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor and worked as the organist for Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death, which took place on the organ bench at a recital. He composed many works for organ, among them six organ symphonies and a Messe solennelle for chorus and two organs. His six symphonies express the highs and lows of his personal life, and all are written in minor keys. Vierne's Organ Symphony No. 2, Op. 20, is in E minor. Movements: I. Allegro; II. Choral; III. Scherzo; IV. Cantabile; V. Final.

The cantata is one of the few surviving vocal works which Wilhelm Friedemann Bach composed during the eighteen years which he spent as organist and director of music at the Marktkirche in Halle (1746-1764). This cantata, published here for the first time in more than 250 years, was written to introduce the autumn sermons in 1752. A musically and technically demanding composition, it consists of two substantial choral movements, partly concertante and partly polyphonic, based on two biblical utterances. They surround a sensitive, while at the same time strictly contrapuntal, duet for soprano and alto with basso continuo in which God's sweet teaching for the soul is described as the true manna of the faithful, forming a link with the sermons which are to follow. In the compactness of the musical construction and its intensity of expression W. F. Bach was clearly following in the footsteps of his father in this work. Characteristic of Powellâ??s writing style, Five Organ Preludes on Plainsong Tunes is very musical and expressive throughout. The melodies flow smoothly in and outâ?? sometimes in a polyphonic texture and sometimes clearly stated with a solo organ stop. The unmeasured notation and beaming of each tune matches the style of the original chants. Most of the sections are written for three manuals, but they can easily be adapted to a two-manual instrument. Registration suggestions are provided.

As its title indcates, this is a miniature symphony, its structure compacted as much as possible. The classical form is respected, dwon to the smallest details, so that the various development sections lead to a recapitulation of the two themes and to a more asservative conclusion. Throughout the work the style is extremely sparse and straightforward. The nostalgia expressed by the theme of the second movement leads us towards effects of perspective that modify the light thrown on the melody, at first distand and soon more insistent, more dominant, before dying away in the gentle mist.The third movement is somewhat facetious and sly. Despite its brilliantly luminous progress, the ending is nostalgic, whimsical and, once more, humorous.
