A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is the second of two Hailstork organ works composed as variations on the British hymn tune Dundee. The present work begins with a carillon-like ostinato on the hymn’s opening phrase, which returns joyously toward the end of the composition. While the hymn itself is not specific to Nativity, the composer gave this work a Christmas title due to its bell-like cheer.A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is based on a larger single-movement piece written for the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia. That earlier work, A Dundee Fantasy, was commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church. That major concert piece, based on the hymn tune Dundee, was premiered by Alan Morrison.Several small units left over from drafts of A Dundee Fantasee suggested Christmas to me because of the carillon-style ostinato at the beginning that returns grandly at the end. The joyous momentum throughout the whole composition makes this vigil suitable for a Christmas Season concert.

Its bears the subtitle Lament on the Loss of Musical Thought - some Madrigals for Solo Flute or Flute with any other Instruments. This serves as a playing instruction but doubles at the same time as an outmoded programme: it refers back to the musical origin of the opening lamenting motif, a tradition which was once of its time but is not of our time - namely the Lamento genre which gave the title to the Chaconne in Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas. Almost simultaneously I wrote a second version for Piano (for Piano one-and-a-half hands), which already formulates possible approaches for the performer, in some detail, to the indicated, quasi-canonic version of the piece in the programme. The multiple version Ein Hauch von Unzeit III realizes a concrete version of a formal state which floats between strict canon and aleatoric principles: each of the musicians who are spread throughout the hall introduces their own idiomatic translation of the flute part. And so the music exists, omnipresent, not only spatially throughout the hall, but also formally in a sort of fluctuating simultaneity. For that reason, it was my express wish to any potential interpreter that they should construct entirely their own version of the piece. A healthy number of musicians have responded to my suggestion - versions of the piece have now been made for guitar (Cornelius Schwehr, Gunther Schneider), accordion (Hugo Noth), double bass (Fernando Grillo), violin (Hansheinz Schneeberger), viola, violoncello, and double bass (trio basso, Koln), violoncello (Michael Bach), trombone (Andrew Digby) and, created by myself, a sung version for voice (to words by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel und Max Bense), and for viola. The most important requirement for the whole piece is absolute stillness, which should as far as possible emanate from the performer. The pauses are occasionally in this respect the most important element. These may, if one can find the necessary stillness, become very long.Ein Hauch von Unzeit (A Breath of the Untimely) - time almost dissolves!(Klaus Huber, 1989/2014 - translation: David Alberman)CD:Jean-Luc Menet (Bass flute)CD Traversieres 120.270Jean-Luc Menet (fl)CD STR 37039Bibliography:Zimmermann, Heidy: Zeitgestaltung im Kompositionsprozess bei Klaus Huber - dargestellt anhand von Skizzen, in: Mnemosyne. The newly engraved scores and parts for the six op. 4 organ concertos follow the revised volume of the Handel Complete Edition edited by Terence Best and William Gudger [BA 8340 / BA 8341-BA 8346].The new scores and orchestral parts are free from the overediting found in other editions available today. This means performers can play just exactly what Handel wrote and not what others think he meant. In other words, you will not find trills, staccato marks and slurs sprinkled throughout the score, you will find what Handel wrote. In this new Urtext edition all editorial additions are clearly indicated.Additional string parts may also be purchased separately.

This toccata is based on the introit to the Christian Epiphany festival and solemnly announces the appearance of the Lord. As a toccata, the work is an introduction to Hakim's Adoration (Schott, ED 22614) for voice, flute and organ, a paraphrase of the first three introitus to Epiphany. The Toccata develops a series of symphonic variations with virtuoso movements that emphasize the expressiveness of the words of the Gregorian text: Ecce advenit dominator dominus: et regnum in manu ejus, et potestas, et empium. Deus, judicium tuum regi da: et justitiam tuam Filio regis. (Behold, the Lord, the ruler, comes: and the kingdom is in his hand, and the power and the dominion. God, give your judicial office to the king: and yours Justice to the son of the king.) (Malachi 3: 1, I Chronicles 29:12, Psalm 71: 1, 10, 11).

Joan Cabanilles was cathedral organist in Valencia and the towering figure in Spanish organ music of the late 17th century. His brilliant and diverse musical language, rooted in the traditional sounds of Spain, has not managed to reach a large audience outside the Iberian peninsula, although he is often called “a musician of European statureâ€. The aim of this three-volume Urtext edition is to grant access to his most appealing works. To this end, all available sources in the libraries of Astorga, Barcelona, San Lorenzo de el Escoreal, Felanitx/Mallorca, Jaca and Montserrat have been examined and newly evaluated. If Cabanilles’s oeuvre consists primarily of tientos, organ hymns and versets, the third and final volume contains three versos, three pasacalles, two galliards, two toccatas and such special forms as Paseos de tercer tono, Diferencias de FolÃas and a Jácara.„This is an excellent resource for organists interested in exploring this satisfying repertoire.“ (Brian E. Harlow, Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians 1/2018)
