The piece was composed for the project of the pianist Susanne Kessel: Commissioned until Beethoven's 250th birthday in 2020, she plays and releases new piano pieces of 250 contemporary composers of new electronic music, jazz, pop and film music which all refer to Beethoven and his works. Despite the historical distance, York Holler finds an intellectual proximity to his predecessor with regard to the permanent development. While sometimes reaching enormous dimensions in Beethoven's symphonies, the principle is compressed by Holler in his composed homage into three minutes. As a basis he uses two contrasting motifs which are derived from thetone letters of Beethoven's name.

Niels Gade (1817-1890), who was born in Copenhagen and spent most of his life there, went to Leipzig in 1843 for further training on a royal scholarship. There he became friends with Robert Schumann and found an eager patron in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He is regarded as the most important figure of the Danish musical scene in the 19th century. His charming cycle 'Der Kinder Christabend' was published in 1859 with titles and texts in Danish. Although the first German edition was published in Leipzig in 1860, the English edition was not published in London until 1880. With his five mood pictures 'Weihnachts-Glocken' - 'Weihnachtsbaum-Einzugs-Marsch' - 'Ringeltanz der Knaben' - 'Tanz der kleinen Madchen' - 'Gute Nacht', Gade portrays the typical atmosphere of a middle-class Christmas evening in the 19th century.

Kalevi Aho's Piano Sonata No. 2 Hommage a Beethoven (2016) is a tribute to that great giant of the piano sonata, Beethoven. The very opening bars already allude to the older master's most mammoth sonata, the Hammerklavier, op. 106. In many places, Aho has spread the texture over three staves in his search for a mighty sound. The third movement is in the nature of a scherzo, drawing on musical material from the second movement of the Hammerklavier. There are no allusions to Beethoven in the fourth movement, but its texture, with bells, is somehow evocative of Mussorgsky's Great Gate of Kiev. The last movement gathers the sonata's motifs together again until, little by little, they disperse and chirruping birdsong leads the sonata to an enigmatic conclusion. The sonata is dedicated to Sonja Fraki, who premiered the work at Mantta Music Festival in August 2018.

Stuart MacRae's Piano Sonata was commissioned by the City Music Society and first performed by Philip Fowke at a City Music Society lunchtime concert on 27 October 1998. The composer writes: 'By the time I started writing the Piano Sonata in 1998 I had been thinking for a while about the possibilities of making works out of two separate parts which would balance one another. In order for this to be effective the two parts would have to be more or less self-sufficient, and have their own internal balance: in fact the first movement has been performed several times as a piece in its own right; the second movement has its own material until near the end when a sort of coda mixes the material from the two movements (albeit inconclusively).'.

“Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony, melodies and his passion for ornithology, his Catalogue of Birds for Piano is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. Catalogue of Birds, composed in 1958, comprises thirteen movements, each depicting a specific bird. The first volume contains the first three movements; 1) The Alpine Chough, 2) The Oriole, and 3) The Blue Merle. Catalogue of Birds is essential to all advanced pianists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.â€.

Germaine Tailleferre first met Charlie Chaplin when she was living in New York City with her first husband Ralph Barton. Tailleferre and Chaplin spent a great deal of time improvising at the piano and Tailleferre convinced him to write his own themes for the music he used in his films. After her divorce from Ralph Barton, she did not see Chaplin until the early 1950s during a visit he made to Paris. At that time, she wrote this attractive waltz in Chaplin’s own style to give to him as a gift.

The present dedication composition Erinnerung by Engelbert Humperdinck is a discovery of historical significance. Until recently hidden in the poetry album of his sister Ernestine, who died at an early age, this little tune from 1871 already shows the only 17-year-old Humperdinck to be a romantically sensitive inventor of melodies and accomplished composer. Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester in 1857. Until the outstanding success of the 'Enigma' Variations in 1899, he was considered a 'provincial' composer - and a largely self taught one at that.In the earlier part of Elgar's career as a composer, he wrote several short pieces which became very popular indeed. Chanson de nuit is one such, the second of a pair (Chanson de Matin the other being), which carried his name far and wide before his larger orchestra works appeared. It was published in several versions at once: for string orchestra, for small orchestra, for violin and piano and so on - so it is almost impossible to say, with any degree of certainty, which was theoriginal version. This arrangement makes a useful addition to the repertoire for piano.

A solid finger dexterity, equally well developed with regard to precise touch and time, has been until today the alpha and omega of piano technique. The school Le Pianiste-Virtuose by H.L. Hanon, the object of which is above all the development of a brilliant five fingers technique, has therefore not lost any of its high pedagogic value; these exercises not only present a solid foundation for the pupil, but also help the expert pianist to maintain his technique on its high level. Hanon's exercises are an exhaustive compendium of piano-technical foundations.

According to the distinguished musicologist Juan Bautista Varela, the Galician Treboada is a musical term out of the songbook, as its sense is merely musical. From a lexicographical point of view it means thunderstorm, storm, squall, etc. It is almost an onomatopoeic sense, due to the great noise that the bass drums, fundamental elements of the Treboada, make. The Treboada is played always on the eves of celebrations or feasts and it is played by three or five bass drums, one or two Galician bagpipes and a drum. The dispersion area of the Treboada is much reduced, according to the poet and essayist Eliseo Alonso Rodriguez, it comprises the parishes of Forcadela and Estas, both of them belong to the town of Tomino. Xose Hernique Rodriguez Portela, from Tomino, says that they also play it on the feast of the Virgin of St. Mary of Tomino eve (Virgen del Alivio de Santa Maria de Tomino). I owe him the idea of this piece, because Xose Henrique described to me how the bass drums sound in the distance, early in the morning, like great roars along with blank bullets that are shot every time a particular house donates money for the feast and they gradually approach the house until it trembles. He sang the melody I wrote and he confessed he had heard it not long ago in the rehearsal of a popular folk group where there was only a percussionist and a Galician bagpipe player, as with the drums it is difficult to appreciate the bagpipe. I also mix the Treboada with an Alborada, because in Galicia almost all the churches have loudspeakers that play this melody at around nine o'clock in the morning, the same time that the Treboada of Tomino starts playing. Gloria Rodriguez Gil.
