HOROSCOPE is a collection of studies and performance pieces. In order to learn specific techniques, it is essential to put them into continual practice. For this reason, Bert Appermont has put together a group of interesting and musical-soundingstudies, which directly lead into the pieces themselves. He assigned each composition to a different sign of the zodiac and chose two characteristics per sign. As the sequence of the pieces is determined by the order of the zodiac, they are notarranged in order of difficulty. Lots of fun practising and playing!

HOROSCOPE bestaat uit zowel etudes als speelstukken. Om bepaalde technieken te leren is het immers belangrijk om ze meteen toe te kunnen passen, dus heb ik een aantal interessante en mooi klinkende etudes in deze bundel opgenomen - waar despeelstukken uiteraard op aansluiten. Omdat ik al geruime tijd geinteresseerd ben in astrologie leek het me een goed idee om elke compositie te koppelen aan een teken uit de dierenriem. Zo heb ik per teken twee karaktereigenschappen geselecteerd dieals inspiratie dienden.
Doordat de structuur is bepaald door de volgorde van de tekens, zijn de composities niet gerangschikt volgens moeilijkheidsgraad. Ik hoop dat dit materiaal mag aanzetten tot veel studeer- en musiceerplezier!

HOROSCOPE setzt sich aus Etüden und Spielstücken zusammen, die nicht nach Schwierigkeitsgrad, sondern nach der Reihenfolge der Tierkreiszeichen geordnet sind. Diese interessanten und gut klingenden Etüden ermöglichen es, bestimmte Techniken aufvergnügliche Art zu üben und aufzuführen. Jede Komposition ist einem Tierkreiszeichen zugeordnet, für die der Komponist jeweils zwei typische Eigenschaften auswählte. Viel Freude beim Einstudieren dieser besonderen, musikalischen Sternzeichen!

HOROSCOPE est une collection de morceaux d’étude et de concert. Pour apprendre certaines techniques spécifiques, il est essentiel de les mettre régulièrement en pratique. Afin d’y parvenir, Bert Appermont a rassemblé une série d’études intéressanteset musicales, chacune menant directement la pièce elle-même. Il a attribué chaque composition un signe du zodiaque pour lequel il a donc choisi deux caractéristiques typiques.
Les pièces étant présentées dans l’ordre des signes du zodiaque en commençant par le premier mois de l’année, elles ne sont pas classées par ordre de difficulté. Beaucoup plaisir !

The idea of composing 'Games' was suggested by children playing spontaneously, children for whom the piano still means a toy. They experiment with it, caress it, attack it and run their fingers over it. They pile up seemingly disconnected sounds, and if this happens to arouse their musical instinct they look consciously for some of the harmonies found by chance and keep repeating them. Thus this series does not provide a tutor, nor does it simply stand as a collection of pieces. It is a possibility for experimenting and not for learning to play the piano.Pleasure in playing, the joy of movement - daring and if need be fast movement over the entire keyboard right from the firstlessons instead of clumsy groping for keys and the counting of rhythms - all these rather vague ideas lay at the outset of the creation of this collection. Playing - is just playing. It requires a great deal of freedom and initiative from the performer. On no account should the written image be taken seriously but the written image must be taken extremely seriously as regards the musical process, the quality of sound and silence. We should trust the picture of the printed notes and let is exert its influence upon us. The graphic picture conveys an idea about the arrangement in time of even the most free pieces. We should make use of all that we know and remember of free declamation, folk-music parlando-rubato, of Gregorian chant and of all that improvisational musical practice has ever brought forth.Let us tackle bravely even the most difficult task without being afraid of making mistakes: we should try to create valid proportions, unity and continuity out of the long and short values - just for our own pleasure! Sadie Harrison is known primarily as a composer and lecturer, her music performed and broadcast across the globe, with works released to critical acclaim on Naxos, NMC, Cadenza, Sargasso, BML, Divine Art/Metier, and Clarinet Classics. For several years, she also pursued a secondary career as an archaeologist, specialising initially in the Irish Neolithic, and latterly in the prestige pottery of the Continental Bronze Age (also appearing on Channel 4's Time Team). Reflecting her interest in the past, many of Sadie's compositions have been inspired by the traditional music of old and extant cultures with cycles of pieces based on the folkmusic of Afghanistan, Lithuania, the Isle of Skye, the Northern Caucasus and the UK.
