Mozart's lieder reveal him to be a dramatist in miniature. Even if he failed to cultivate this genre systematically he nevertheless directed his creative powers toward the lied at all stages of his career. His first effort (now lost) was written at the age of six or seven and he took up the genre again and again at irregular intervals down to the final year of his life. None the less Mozart usually chose to write a lied only when there was a special occasion for doing so. Even the preface to the firt complete edition of his lieder published in 1799 by Breitkopf

This work possibly commissioned by Prince-Bishop Sigismund Christoph von Schrattenbach was assigned to three Salzburg composers: W. A. Mozart (part 1) Michael Haydn (part 2) and Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (part 3). Only the manuscript of part 1 has survived. Here Mozart drew heavily on the Salzburg tradition of church music and school dramas perhaps taking Johann Ernst Eberlin and even his father Leopold as his models. The first performance took place in the Knights’ Hall of the prince’s palace on 12 March 1767. The libretto was supplied by Ignaz Anton Weiser (1701 1785) town councillor and mayor of Salzburg. Mozart wrote out many of theappoggiaturas in this early work thereby providing a useful guide to the vocal practices of his day. Aria No.2 has come down to us with an instructive passage in which the Vocal part is ornamented in the hand of Leopold Mozart.

Das Veilchen-The elegant playful endlessly creative pen of Mozart wrote this short song on 8 June 1785 in Vienna. The three-verse poem by Goethe had already been set to music by at least four composers before Mozart was inspired to write.While the poem has three equal stanzas the song has three distinct moods relating to the words. They tell the sad tale of a violet symbolizing a young man who loves a young shepherdess. The shepherdess carelessly tramplesthe violet who manages to die happily for love. Mozart himself added a final sympathetic line of text. The range is not demanding and there are useful notes in this edition on ornamentation making this a charming addition toa younger singer’s repertoire as well as to an experienced singer’s collection.

The 0ffertorium de venerabili sacramento “Venite populi” à 2 Chori K. 260/248a – dated Salzburg 1767 by Mozart in his autograph score – clearly reveals a striving for more pronounced contrapuntal work. A short homophonic central movement is framed by two predominantly polyphonic movements that are fashioned from the same thematic material. The two-chorus texture offers many opportunities for interweaving as well as contrast and echo effects of all kinds. German singspiel in three acts-?I know for a fact that the Emperor is proposing to mount a German opera in Vienna and that he is making every effort to find a young Kapellmeister who understands German has talent and is capable of striking out on a new path. [...] I think it would be a good thing for me provided of course that the pay is good. If the Emperor will give me a thousand gulden I will write a German opera for him.?Thus Mozart in a letter of 10 11 January 1778 from Mannheim to his father Leopold. He continued by asking his father to ?write to every good friend in Vienna you can think of and say that it is in my power to do honor to the Emperor. If he won?t take meon any other terms then let him try me with an opera.
