Rodelinda Regina de' Longobardi HWV 19; Opera in three acts. After Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano Rodelinda is the third masterly opera that Handel composed between December 1723 and January 1725. The words were written by Nicola Haym the author of many other Handel librettos. The first performance took place at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket London on 13 February 1725. Rodelinda thrives entirely on the ethical supremacy of conjugal love and thus prefigures the great operas by Gluck and Beethoven on the same subject. The plot is taken from the history of the Lombard royalty. Oskar Hagen’s revival of Rodelinda in 1920 ushered in the modern Handel operamovement. The work forms the climax to a series of dramatic masterpieces that includes Handel’s most significant operas. Handel returned to Rodelinda on two occasions in December 1725 and in May 1731. Many far-reaching changes were necessary owing to the different skills of the new singers. For example Handel wrote three new arias and a duet for the first revival. Yet the changes he made for this performance doubtless to accommodate the needs and wishes of the singers also improve the work’s dramatic substance. Our vocal score is based on the Urtext of the full score published in the Halle Handel Edition (II/16) and reproduces the various alternative readings and versions in an appendix.Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition.Full score (BA4064) & vocal score (BA4064-90) available for sale.Performance material (BA4064-72) available for hire

Par WEILL KURT. Trois Chansons by Kurt Weill is a set of three French songs for Voice and Piano. The lyrics have been written by Maurice Magre and Roger Fernay and the general level of difficulty is medium. The first piece, Complainte de la Seine (Complains of the Seine), is three page long and its lyrics are about what lies at the bottom of the river. The second song, Je ne t'aime pas (I don't love you), is a man telling someone that he doesn't love her, that everything is fine and that he is fine if she is happy. The third piece, Youkali is a highly rhythmic tango-habanera in fourpages, which depicts the island of Youkali. Kurt Weill (1900-1950) is a German composer who developed operas and some works for the concert hall./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

(+)
Written after William Shakespeare La Mort D'Ophélie is a piece by Hector Berlioz. For two female voices (Soprano and Contralto) accompanied by a Piano this piece tells the story of the death of Ophélie while she was picking some flowers next to a torrential river. Even though the end of the story is sad the music is highly lyrical resulting from the combination of the two voices and the Piano part could be played by an upper intermediate player. Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a French Romantic composer who made a significant contribution to music. His best-known pieces are his''Fantastic Symphony'' and his ''Requiem''.

(+)
Although almost unanimously condemned by contemporary Parisian critics for its overt sexuality and graphic final scene Carmen ultimately reached the public in a way that perhaps no other opera has. Bizet's aim (with Meilhac and Halevy who wrote the libretto) had been to transform the flaccid moralistic bourgeois genre of opéra comique into a more sophisticated type of staged work and he seems to have suceeded in Carmen. Each character has a musical significance and a unique expressive idiom the ultimate example being the dangerous exotic sensual Carmen herself depicted by an exotic and sinewy chromatic motive that also implies the insurmountable power of fate. Ina classic plot device she is contrasted with the 'good girl' of the opera Micaela whose main aria is set in the ternary form of the elevated bel canto French Grand Opera aria to imply her traditionally 'ladylike' retiring nature. Don José's musical styles reflect different levels in his descent from dutiful soldier to the underworld of obsession. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

Regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) had a distinctively nationalistic style. His Andalusian influences are clearly seen in his ballet El AmorBrujo which is often praised for its originality while at the same time preserving the beauty of the Andalusian folk themes. The libretto was written by Gregorio Mart nez Sierra and the ballet was firstpublished in 1915. The composer issued several revisions during his lifetime but his original work is given here. The Voice part has been paired with a Piano reduction making it ideal for rehearsal accompaniment private study or recital performance.

(+)
It was to her teacher Henri Busser professor of counterpoint at the Conservatoire de Paris that young composer and organist Henriette Roget (1910-1992) dedicated in 1934 the Four French Ballads composed to the poetry of Paul Fort (1872-1960). Nicknamed “the northern cicada” by Mistral this friend of Verlaine Mallarmé and Apollinaire began his career as a symbolist playwright at the Théâtre des Arts before deciding to focus exclusively on poetry. His French Ballads mingled popular feeling creative fantasy and rhythmic elasticity – an alliance that would inspire musicians as diverse asHonegger Caplet and Brassens. Roget detested works of bravura and bombastic grandiloquence; Paul Fort’s verse provided fertile material for her inclination toward sincerity spontaneity and unembellished lyricism. In “Le Bonheur” “Il nous faut aimer sur terre” “Si le bon dieu l’avait voulu” and “Le Diable dans la nuit” the music translates the beating of hearts and the vibrations of light with a delicacy and a naturalness that brush the very depths of the soul. Through each of these pure crystals a precious gift shines: the art of suggestion. I. Le Bonheur II. Il nous faut aimer sur terre III. Si le bon dieu l’avait voulu IV. Le Diable dans la nuit

(+)
Elgar was pre-eminently the composer of large forms. Complex, lengthy development of musical ideas was for him a measure of genius. His songs, with the exception of the orchestral cycle Sea Pictures , were not often the vehicles for his most striking ideas. Paradoxically, he was also bedevilled by a fine literally taste. He once told a friend that he felt it better to set the best second-rate poetry to music, for the most immortal verse is music already. Some of his songs are therefore settings of poets now all but forgotten, such as Arthur Salmon and Gilbert Parker: to their verse his music might make a vital addition. Elgar's songs offer authentic Edwardian reflections which we can value now in their own terms. These songs are full of echoes of a master's thoughts - and especially in the songs written for the stage - flashes of his genius. / Chant Et Piano

(+)
In his libretto for “Riccardo Primo” Paolo Rolli drew on Antonio Lotti’s opera “Isacio tiranno” which had been performed in Venice in 1710. Handel needed a text with two great women’s roles for the two best female singers of the day were members of his troupe – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. He had already written the operas “Alessandro” and “Admeto” for them. He began composing “Riccardo Primo” in spring 1727 completing the first version on 16 May. However following the death of King George I on 11 June 1727 the theatres remained closed. For Handel who had become a British citizen in February 1727 the accession of George II to the throne offered new possibilities and he embarked on a revision of the opera. With this he was able to offer a new opera for the coronation festivities the hero of which was one of King George’s charismatic forebears. From May onwards Handel thoroughly revised the present score wrote some parts anew and expanded it with particularly splendid music. Handel and Rolli also improved the plot and introduced patriotic elements to honour the British monarchy. The historic background is the third crusade against Saladin the Sultan of Egypt and Syria who had recaptured Jerusalem in 1187. Although King Richard I captured Cyprus and together with French crusaders stormed the fortress of Akko in the Holy Land the crusade ended with a ceasefire and Jerusalem remained in Saladin’s hands. Richard was given the title ‘Coeur-de-lion’ by the English for his great military ability and bravery although the Sicilians had first given him this name because of his relentless cruelty in clashes around Messina . The vocal score is based on the Halle Handel Edition volume published in 2005 edited by Terence Best and contains the second version of the opera which was premiered in November 1727. Performance material available for hire. Based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition. Original Italian text with German singing translation. Straightforward and easy-to-play Piano reduction.

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum. This edition is enriched with twelve additions which enable the performance of the 1763-1764 version when the work was restaged. / Date parution : 2023-06-16/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Ed. critica A. Borin - A. Moccia - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. With Il Teuzzone, RV 736, the collected edition of operas by Antonio Vivaldi gains a new volume that brings to completion the pair of operas written by the ?Red Priest? for Mantua. Premiered during the last days of 1718, the opera preceded by a few months the production of Tito Manlio, RV 738 (PR 1411). This edition of Teuzzone, the first in modern times, is based on the two complete sources to have survived: a copy originating from the composer?s own archive (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino, Raccolta Mauro Foà 33) and the one today housed in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung, N. Mus, ms. 125), which was made for the Mantuan production. Additionally, numerous secondary sources have been collated. An appendix to the volume contains the musical materials discarded by Vivaldi during the period preceding the opera?s premiere. The supporting texts for the edition report on new findings that have emerged from archival and documentary research. It has been established, for instance, that the aria Tu, mio vezzoso (I.03) is a borrowing from Alessandro Severo by Antonio Lotti, while the aria Tornerò, pupille belle (II.02) is a reworking of Nelle mie selve natie, an aria in Scanderbeg, RV 732. These examples reveal the pasticcio-like nature of this Vivaldi opera. In the section concerned with the description of the sources, which includes a meticulous codicological examination of the source in Turin, a bold attempt has been made to reconstruct the phases that the composition of Vivaldi?s opera underwent, an operation that sheds light on the inner workings of Vivaldi?s atelier. In addition, the close relationship of this score to a work with the same title staged in Turin with music by G. Casanova and A. S. Fiorè is analysed./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Ed. critica di Ivano Bettin - Riduzione per canto e pianoforte di A. Frigé-The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score published in this catalog in November 2019. Antonio Vivaldi?s La Dorilla a heroic-pastoral opera on a libretto by Antonio Maria Lucchini was premiered at the Teatro Sant?Angelo in Venice on 6 November 1726. Six years later it was revived in a much shortened and altered form at the Sporck Theatre in Prague. In 1734 it returned for the last time to the Venetian stage at the Teatro Sant?Angelo where despite being greatly revised it was once again successful. Many of its recitatives had been shortened and several arias replaced some with movements borrowed from other operas by Vivaldi and some with arias taken from ones by other composers such as Johann Adolf Hasse Geminiano Giacomelli Domenico Sarro and Leonardo Leo. The adaptation was the work of the Venetian man of letters Bartolomeo Vitturi who adjusted the libretto with the precise aim of satisfying the demands of the public which wished to hear the most famous pieces by the composers who were fashionable in those years. This vocal-score edition includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context the description of the main source employed and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text.
