Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work in his use of Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. Some see composition of the Vedic Hymns as a turning point in Holst’scompositional life. The quality is not completely consistent and Holst remained true to his Western musical inheritance for the most part in setting them but as art songs they are deeply felt and moving to hear.The nine songsare scored for mezzo-Soprano or baritone Voice. The texts are taken from the Rigveda one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism and the oldest religious text in the world.The first set of three comprises Ushas Varuna and Maruts or Dawn Sky and Stormclouds respectively. The second includes Indra (God of Storm and Battle) Varuna II (the Waters) and Song of the Frogs. The third group moves into the human sphere with Vac (Speech) Creation and Faith.

Pour Soprano Et Orchestre (Piano Reduction)-Gabriel Fauré's Chanson De Mélisande for Soprano and Orchestra. Reduction for Voice and Piano.   “An enchanted dream” – poet Charles Van Leberghe’s words give us an idea of the audience’s enthusiasm at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Piccadilly on June 21st 1898 when the first English language performance of Symbolist play Pelléas et Mélisande by Maurice Maeterlinck was performed with incidental music by Gabriel Fauré.    The composer had tasked his favourite student Charles Koechlin with orchestratingthe score. The London theatre’s small number of musicians suited the apprentice musician’s ideals of clarity and transparency. It was 1936 before Koechlin returned to La Chanson de Mélisande this time to create a version with orchestra published the following year as a Piano-Vocal score. Using autograph manuscripts Roger Nichols and Otfrid Nies have created a new edition of the Piano-Vocal reduction that includes the text of the melody in English French and German. The score contains the 1898 and 1936 variations as well as an informative preface by Otfrid Nies.

Par NAOUMOFF EMILE. These songs by Emile Naoumoff are squarely in the tradition of French lied composition such as by Gabriel Fauré. Here, Naoumoff chose texts by late 19th-century French lyricists: Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Emile Verhaeren, Charles Baudelaire and René-François Sully-Prudhomme. In their elegance and suppleness, the four songs sound typically French. As they are all easy to sing and have not been composed 'against' the voice, they are perfectly suited for both music lessons and concert programmes. Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of eight, he began his career as a pianist and composer; he was a student of Nadia Boulanger for ten years until her death. At the age of ten, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. He then received numerous awards and prizes and gave performances as highly acclaimed pianist. Today, Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University at Bloomington. Comédie-ballet in three Acts. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. This edition presents a further dramatic jewel for the stage by Jean-Philippe Rameau. It comes with a vocal score for study and rehearsals as well as with a compilation of the purely instrumental parts for performance as a suite in the concert hall. In view of the wealth of the work’s musical treasures and the stylistic innovations – similar to the “Boréades” – the rather frosty reception of the premiere series in the spring of 1760 seems completely incomprehensible to us today. It led to this Comédie ballet not being performed until well into the 20th century. The story that the ballet tells is based on a fable by La Fontaine, “Le Petit chien qui secoue de l’argent et des pierreries” (i.e. “The little dog who shakes silver and stones”). In medieval Veneto, the guardian Anselme undermines the love affairs of his ward Argies. Scenes of tragic expression are contrasted with folk-comic ones: and last but not least, the sexually ambiguous fairy Manto may have caused difficulties for the bold work at the Paris Opéra. The critical new edition published as part of the “Opera omnia Rameau” series offers the final version, supplemented in the appendix by the variants of the original version. Since “Les Paladins” remained unpublished during Rameau’s lifetime and was also not included in the “Œuvres complètes”, this is the first edition of the work. Par LEVINAS MICHAEL. Précédé de Je, tu, il, prologue à La Métamorphose sur un texte de Valère Novarina. Au sortir d'un rêve agité, Grégor Samsa s'éveille pour vivre un véritable cauchemar, celui de sa transformation en énorme cancrelat. Tout le monde connaît cette nouvelle de Kafka - elle appartient désormais à nos mythologies contemporaines. L'idée d'en faire un opéra est tellement excitante qu'on en serait presque à se demander pourquoi une telle adaptation n'a encore jamais été tentée. Peut-être parce que la perspective donne le vertige et que l'histoire elle-même semble veiller à sa propre irreprésentabilité ? Il aura fallu attendre près d'un siècle pour que le texte se métamorphose en opéra grâce à Michaël Levinas et à l'équipe artistique qu'il a réunie. Avec Valère Novarina et Emmanuel Moses, le compositeur opère un travail sur la langue pour révéler sa vocalité lyrique. Le chant du 'sopraniste' Fabrice Di Falco et des autres interprètes est ensuite traité par des techniques d'hybridation informatiques [réalisées à l'Ircam, NDLR]. Toujours en quête 'd'une suggestion d'ébranlement dramatique dans la vibration du son' comme s'il y avait un 'au-delà du son dans le son', la musique de Levinas s'ouvre au fantastique. Ce sentiment de l'extraordinaire sera rendu palpable par les instrumentistes d'Ictus, imbattables quand il s'agit de faire advenir des univers inouïs. L'adaptation scénique est confiée à Stanislas Nordey, homme de théâtre insatiable découvreur de textes contemporains. Il s'est également distingué à l'occasion de nombreuses collaborations avec les plus grands compositeurs de notre temps, parmi lesquels Michaël Levinas.
