Sonatas and quartets aren't my thing. Armed with this self-knowledge, composer Isabelle Aboulker placed singing at the heart of her creative activity and garnered huge success in a variety of genres such as oratorio (The Man who Staggered Through War, 1997), comic opera (Monsieur de Balzac fait son theatre, 1999), childrens tales (Douce et Barbe Bleue, 2002) and the theatrical adaptationof narrative works (Une fille quon appelle Boule de suif, 2014). Isabelle Aboulker also devotes much attention to melody, as can be seen in this collection presenting a few of her most enchanting successes. Her prosodic clarity and focus on the power of words crystallises a musical legacy that stretches from Rameau to Poulenc. This anthology of melodies for voice and piano - most of which are written for all voices - is delightfully eclectic: the melancholyperfume of the Lettre damour sits beside the unnerving eeriness of the merchant of souls (Au marche de Saint-Paul), while the limpid music of the La Fontaines Fables contrasts with the fever that animates Je taime, a passionate vocalise dedicated to Patritica Petibon. A subtle, sensitive art that enchants all who lend an ear.

The work of Paul Hindemith is encyclopedic in nature. From the outset, he worked in all musical genres and devised several of his musical ideas and projects not as individual, self-contained works but as work cycles with different functional relationships. These contrasting pieces complement each other if experienced as part of the overall structure. Hindemith himself not only wanted a complete edition of his collected works but had begun planning it; at his death he left a detailed list of Unpublished pieces for an eventual complete edition. The Complete Works contain all finished works in all extant versions, newly engraved for the edition. Sketches and fragments are published in appendices of the relevant volume, and are evaluated in the Introduction and Critical Commentary by the respective volume editor. Each volume contains a preface by the editorial directors and an introduction by the volume editor, delineating the genesis and performance history of the work, with authentic performance instructions, an evaluation of extant recordings by Paul Hindemith himself and a Critical Commentary. The Complete Works of Paul Hindemith are thus presented in a critical, scholarly edition which is equally appropriate for study and performance. Hindemith researchers will welcome the numerous first publications of works by the composer, and practical musicians will appreciate the newly prepared, philologically ordered performance material.

These two contrasing songs, setting poems by Emily Dickinson, are highly contrasting. 'Summer' is meditative and nostalgic, whilst 'Hope' is mercurial and fleet-footed, evoking the skittering of a bird.

Known for her Operas and Vocal works, contemporary composer, Isabelle Aboulker has won numerous prizes for her compositions. I love you makes for a sublime performance work for Soprano and Piano. Described as a love song for a distressed Soprano, I love you is technically challenging. Aboulker's love song addresses features including intervals, staccato, a wide range, altering time signatures and contrasting dynamics, amongst other aspects. As an exciting, alternative collection in the Vocal repertoire, Aboulker's I love you is an exquisite addition to the Soprano repertoire..
