Translation: Engl. (S. Wadsworth) (1988) / (Norbert Rubesaat) (1993); French (Jean-Pierre Wurtz) (1997) Place and time: Jail Munchen-Stadelheim, in the hour before the execution on 22nd February 1943 Characters: Sophie Scholl (soprano) / Hans Scholl (baritone or tenor) >>Weisse Rose<< (White Rose) was the name of the resistance group to which Hans and Sophie Scholl belonged. Udo Zimmermann's composition is characterized by the varying structure of its scenes: dramatic, visionary scenes, e.g. the remembered wartime experiences on the front, Sophie's anxiety about the removal of the children and the wish to see her parents one last time, contrast with contemplative monologues that are intended to provide insights into the individual's particular situation. The composer interweaves into the structure of the piece dream sequences with sudden bursts of anxiety that are not triggered by the execution that is about to take place but by the consequences of one's own actions. The result is a deliberate fusion of the various parts into one another. More than 100 different productions prove that the topic is as important as ever and that the work is both artistically rewarding and practicable. Udo Zimmermann About the piece Two young people, the siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, are in a prison cell, one hour before they are to be put to death by their fascist executioners. Their christian convictions and sense of responsibility gave them the courage to put up resistance, resistance against the lies, the contempt for humanity and all human values. Sophie and Hans Scholl took their stand in the full knowledge that they were taking a deadly risk. They would simply not have been able to live with their feelings of shame had they not grasped the chance of fighting for what they believed in, even though it was a dangerous thing to do. Memories of past events, doubts, hopes and fears, justification of deeds and an acceptance of death, all these things happen and move in, and between, these two people during this representation of the hour before death. The orchestra provides a psycho-physical shorthand of their inner mental state. Musical effects and gestures search for their identity in human behaviour. The moments of stillness and silence provide moments of musical tension, which are just as powerful as the eruptions of fear and desperation. All songs and lieder composed in the years 1910-1937 by the composer Erwin Schulhoff from Prague, who was persecuted by the National Socialists, are now published in three volumes for the first time, documenting his very different creative phases and stages of life: Whereas Vol. I and II stand for the emancipation from being a successor to Wagner and Debussy, Vol. III contains not only the well-known atonal Funf Gesange from 1919 but also fresh jazzy popular songs and political songs for the masses written after 1933 when he turned to communism.

The Urtext edition (2023) of Jean Sibeliusâ Five Christmas Songs op. 1 for voice and piano is based on the critical edition presented in the volume VIII/2 Works for Solo Voice Vol. 2 of Jean Sibelius Works (JSW) edited by Jukka Tiilikainen. The lyrics are included in Swedish, Finnish and English.Sakari Ylivuori's introduction illuminates the history of the beloved songs: May 1, 1913 was cold and wet. Jean Sibelius (1865â1957) spent the day at home at Ainola composing two Christmas songs: settings of poems for children by Zachris Topelius. The two songs born on that chilly spring day were Nu stÃ¥r jul vid snöig port (Now stands Yule at the snowy gate) and Nu sÃ¥ kommer julen (Now is Christmas coming). He then put them together with three Christmas carols he had earlier composed and gave the set the imposing Opus number 1. He had previously considered giving the distinction to various other works, but from 1915 onwards the Five Christmas Songs had the honour of heading his catalogue. In 1918-19, Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs, commonly known as Sette Canzoni. They were initially intended as a stand-alone work, but became incredibly popular when they wereincluded as the second act of the composer's opera L'Orfiede. However, in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer's masterpieces.
Like all of the seven songs, the fifth, Serenata, is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment, it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time, unknown to him, shesits inside lamenting the death of a relative.
Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunieres, and into English by Edwin Evans.
