Edvard Grieg's (1843-1907) Haugtussa (The Mountain Maid), Op. 67, the only song cycle that Grieg ever produced, sets eight of the poems from Norwegian writer Arne Garborg to music. Haugtussa tells the story of a young herding girl and her first love for a boy and its heartache. Not every poem from the collection was set by Grieg, but those that are included are as follow: 1. Lockung (Allurement), 2. Das Kind der Berge (The Mountain Maid), 3. In den Heidelbeeren (Among the Bilberries), 4. Stelldichein (The Tryst), 5. Lieve (Love), 6. Zickeltanz (Kid Dance), 7. Ein boser Tag (An Evil Day), 8. Am Bergbach (The Mountain Brook).

In 1918-19, Gian Francesco Malipiero wrote a collection of seven songs, commonly known as Sette Canzoni. They were initially intended as a stand-alone work, but became incredibly popular when they wereincluded as the second act of the composer's opera L'Orfiede. However, in recent years the collection has come to be recognised in its own right as one of the composer's masterpieces.

Like all of the seven songs,the fifth, Serenata, is designed as an individual mini-opera. Scored for a solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment, it tells the story of a young lover serenading his beloved. At the same time, unknown to him, shesits inside lamenting the death of a relative.

Serenata has been translated from the original Italian into French by Henry Prunieres, and into English by Edwin Evans.

Written after William Shakespeare, Ophelie?s death is a piece by Hector Berlioz. For two female voices (Soprano and Contralto) accompanied by a Piano, this piece tells the story of the death of Ophelie, while she was picking some flowers next to a torrential river. Even though the end of the story is sad, the music is highly lyrical resulting from the combination of the two voices, and the Piano part could be played by an upper intermediate player. Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a French Romantic composer who made a significant contribution to music. His best-known pieces are his ''Fantastic Symphony'' and his ''Requiem''..
