2nd Movement-Transcription of the slow movement of Rachmaninov's First Piano Concerto op 1. Programme note by Murray McLachlan: Rachmaninov's first concerto in F sharp minor op 1 was composed in 1891 and dedicated to Alexander Siloti. The work was substantially revised in 1917 with textures made much lighter. The revised version is also more concentrated and disciplined with the material eliminating some of the earlier episodic sections entirely from the score. The second movement is an exquisite 74 bar miniature a nostalgic nocturne that is contrapuntally rich. In this soloversion the use of all three pedals and the middle pedal in particular make it possible to project the multifaceted textures the 'colour counter-point' that along with Rachmaninov's chromaticism enhances his considerable melodic gifts. Was Rachmaninov the 'Russian Bach?' Certainly his genius for 'inner voices' 'inner melodies' and counter-melodies make his music an inexhaustible treasure house of possibility for the creatively charged solo pianist. In Rachmaninov's piano writing there is simply no such thing as 'padding' or anonymous accompaniments- every line can be vocally or orchestrally charged making the music glow with richness and inspiration. This transcription was given its world premiere on April 1- Rachmaninov's birthday- in 2017 in New York as part of a recital for the Lezetizky society. Further performances were given on what was an intense US Easter tour in Washington Texas Boston and Vermont. I've also performed the transcription in Canada and the UK.

In the Silence of the Secret Night is a piano arrangement of Sergei Rachmaninoff?s setting of Afanasy Fet, taken from the composer?s song cycle Six Romances, Op. 4 (1890-93). The poem describes a fitful lover?s nocturnal yearning. This three-minute piece draws on pianist Kirill Gerstein?s idiomatic grasp of the composer?s music, transcribing the song in a way that recalls Rachmaninoff?s writing from the early 1900s. It makes for an ideal vignette in a recital programme or elegant encore, suitable for advanced players. Corelli Variations op. 42-Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known Piano cycle in 1931 at a time when his great works for Piano solo and the Piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the ?work of an old man?.Thecomposer?s variations on the theme ?La folia? (taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the Piano. The Piano Works of Rachmaninoff Volume III: Morceaux de salon Op. 10 and Six moments musicaux Op. 16 Rachmaninoff Sergei (1873 - 1943) At the age of 20 having recently graduated from the Moscow Conservatory Rachmaninoff wrote his Morceaux de Salon Op. 10 in 1893 and 3 years later the six Moments Musicaux. Sonatas Op. 28 Op. 36-From an earlier Belwin Mills edition this is Volume 5 of a series of the piano works of the great Russian-American composer. Included are Rachmaninoff's Opus 28 and Opus 36 Sonatas. The Opus 28 in D-minor in three movements was completed in 1907 and was introduced in Dresden Germany. The Opus 36 in B-flat minor also in three movements was written and 1913 but was later revised by the composer.
