Szilvia Elek: Guide to Early Keyboard Music: Piano or Harpsichord: Instrumental
Piano solo

(+)
France 1-This brand-new series is intended as a guide to the keyboard music of the 16th to 19th centuries for pupils of the piano and the harpsichord as well as of other early keyboard instruments. Each volume contains pieces by well-known and lesser-known composers from one country or region. The main purpose of the series is to extend the repertoire and stylistic knowledge of both pianists and harpsichordists while also presenting fine pieces and typical genres based on original sources. Our edition retains the performance indications of the composers' manuscripts and contemporary editions. Each volume includes:- suggestions for stylistically appropriate performance bothon the piano and on period instruments- suggested elaborated versions of some pieces and excerpts- a fold-out list of ornamentation signs and the composers' own tables of ornamentation signs- biographies of the composers and the sources of the pieces- translations of foreign-language performance indications. The two volumes devoted to French keyboard music includes close to 50 showy and relatively easy works - preludes dances suites rondeaux and character pieces - from the early 16th until the late 18th century (ordered chronologically). This publication is printed on high-quality age-resistant paper that is produced in an environmentally-friendly climate-neutral manner using renewable raw materials.

(+)
It has often struck me as intriguing that The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book (a collection of keyboard music spanning the period c.1562-1612) occupies a virtually non-existent place in the literature considered viable by pianists.Needless to say harpsichordists continue to hold the music in the highest esteem while a number of transcriptions for instruments and ensembles have been made available in more recent times. How can it be that this ancient heritage - which in keyboard music terms might be regarded as the equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls - has hitherto seemed a no-go area for pianists? It is as if the first 'proper' keyboard music tumbledmiraculously out of some parallel universe around Bach's time i.e. the first half of the 18th century. While our modern piano is perhaps as different from a virginal as a washing machine is from a mangle there are in fact a good many facets of virginal music which read across perfectly well to today's instruments. For this to be possible we need to take the time to lookbeyond peculiarities in translation which to a significant extent comes down to issues resulting from burgeoning notational practices. It also becomes necessary to re-imagine the music in light of what is possible as well as what is desirable. Problems with accessing the sound-world of pre-Baroque keyboard music can be overcome quite easily just as it is possible to become better in resonance withavant garde musical styles given appropriate immersion. Since the writing of the performance notes to The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book more than a century ago (by J.A. Fuller Maitland and W. Barclay Squire) the momentum generated by the Early Music Revival has brought about immeasurable insights into the intentions of Renaissance and Baroque composers. Performances on periodinstruments continue to reacquaint us with a bygone age and stimulate a healthy fascination for the practices that were once fundamental to the craft. On balance however the potential for a major

Johann Sebastian Bach: Harpsichord Concerto no. 1 in d minor BWV 1052: Piano

(+)
Bach?s Harpsichord concerti extremely popular among pianists are presumably reworkings of pieces originally written for the Violin. Bach however succeeded in transferring the diverse idiosyncrasies of Violin technique to the keyboard with such ingenuity that most of today?s pianists also include these concerti in their standard repertoire. The first concerto in d minor is perhaps the most popular not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. Now as a prelude to a series of all of Bach?s Harpsichord concerti G. Henle Publishers presents a Piano reduction and study edition(score) of the d-minor concerto. None other than András Schiff the outstanding Bach expert has provided fingering suggestions.

(+)
Sonaten 38-50-The composer pianist and Piano teacher Leopold Koželuch (1747-1818) was one of the leading Czech musicians in 18th-century Vienna. His 50 sonatas for Keyboard bear witness not only to the transition from the harpsichord or clavichord to the pianoforte but also to the evolution of the classical sonata at the turn of the 19th century.Until now there have been few modern editions of this music. This Barenreiter edition prepared by Christopher Hogwood is the first to present all of Koželuch’s sonatas for solo Keyboard. Each of the four volumes contains 12 to 13 sonatas in chronological order by date of initial publication. The fourth volume edited with the assistance of Ryan Mark contains the last sonatas and those handed down only in manuscript form.First complete edition of the sonatas for Keyboard.Suitable for professionals and amateurs alike.Ideal for teaching purposes.Detailed Foreword (Eng/Cz/Ger) Critical Commentary (Eng) and facsimile pages.Overview of contents: Complete Sonatas for Keyboard:Volume I BA 9511 12 sonatas from the years 1780-1784.Volume II BA 9512 12 sonatas from the years 1784-1786.Volume III BA 9513 13 sonatas from the years 1788-1797.Volume IV BA 9514 9 sonatas from the years 1807-1809; 4 sonatas from the 1770s which exist only in manuscript.Complete Sonatas for KeyboardSet of all 4 volumes: BA 9515: Special set price

(+)
Volume 11 K. 507-555-Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day and it is for this reason that this eleventh and final volume is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord Organ or early Pianoforte the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portugueseroyal families. The eleventh volume comprising Sonatas 507-55 includes the popular and recognisable Sonata in E major (K. 531). Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families his Sonatas are composed with much experience understanding and expertise creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre.

(+)
Bach composed these suites early in life before any of the other suite sets such as the French suites. They portray a young Bach bursting with energy dexterity and ideas and rapt enthusiasm for the newest styles of the day - the Italian concertos of Vivaldi and the French harpsichord suites of D'Anglebert Daquin and Couperin. Melding these powerful forms with the already Italianate German fantasy or toccata Bach produced some of the world's first true virtuoso keyboard masterpieces. Little wonder that his contemporaries were dazzled. This Urtext edition edited by Alfred Durr provides you with a clear and accurate realisation of Bach's exciting English suites.

Volume 4 K.156-205-Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day and it is for this reason that this fourth volume is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord Organ or early Pianoforte the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. The fourth volume comprising Sonatas 156-205 includes the popular and recognisable Sonata in C major (K. 159).
