This tiny piece was written as a response to hearing the premiere of Nicola LeFanu's momentous orchestral work The Crimson Bird on 17 February 2017. Nicola was my teacher and supervisor from 1986 to 1989, during my studies at King's College London. Although my formal study with her lasted just these three years, her influence on my creative life has been immense and invaluable, and continues to be felt in every piece I write. Luna ... is marked 'A starlit lullaby'. Its final notes, E and F, supply the letters of Nicola's surname missing from the title. The work was recorded by Philippa Harrison on Return of the Nightingales-Music for solo piano (Prima Facie 2017). - Sadie Harrison.

The present dedication composition Erinnerung by Engelbert Humperdinck is a discovery of historical significance. Until recently hidden in the poetry album of his sister Ernestine, who died at an early age, this little tune from 1871 already shows the only 17-year-old Humperdinck to be a romantically sensitive inventor of melodies and accomplished composer. Sadie Harrison is known primarily as a composer and lecturer, her music performed and broadcast across the globe, with works released to critical acclaim on Naxos, NMC, Cadenza, Sargasso, BML, Divine Art/Metier, and Clarinet Classics. For several years, she also pursued a secondary career as an archaeologist, specialising initially in the Irish Neolithic, and latterly in the prestige pottery of the Continental Bronze Age (also appearing on Channel 4's Time Team). Reflecting her interest in the past, many of Sadie's compositions have been inspired by the traditional music of old and extant cultures with cycles of pieces based on the folkmusic of Afghanistan, Lithuania, the Isle of Skye, the Northern Caucasus and the UK.

The work, which the composer counts among her favourite pieces, was inspired by the life and work of Marguerite Duras. In her play of the same name, a Flemish woman goes to Saigon at the beginning of the 20th century, marries a civil servant and has two children. After her husband's death, she also works as a piano player at the local 'Eden Cinema'. Eden Cinema, which is 'to be played like a traditional piano piece from the Romantic period' according to the composer, sounds poetic, but also cool, funny and extremely modern. Motif repetitions and ostinatos play a major role, as they do with Duras. In addition, quotations appear, literal ones from Beethoven's Hammerklavier Sonata as well as vague echoes of dance rhythms and commonplace music as used in silent film theatres. Thepreparation of the piano strings - metal parts on the high ones, rubber pieces on the low ones - creates a tonal patina and the impression of the past - 'in connection with Duras also recognizable as traumas sedimented in the subconscious, whose indistinct traces obsessively push to the surface' (Eckhard Weber).

This is a piece for rather accomplished pianists. There is purposedly a unique theme, which constantly generates its own development. The piece is an ample pianistic variation which unwinds and then gradually narrows down to the end. But colour and harmony dominate the piece, bringing light, contrast, and peace.

The 'Ten short piano pieces' with the title Sommerferie i Blekinge (Summer Holiday in Blekinge) (1916) have not been preserved in their complete form. The only existing source is a manuscript in Rued Langgaard's hand that lacks the first and last pages with sections of the music. This means that the entire first piano piece with the title Paa rejse (Travelling) is missing as well as most of Piece II, Mode (Meeting) (only the conclusion of this piece has been preserved). A large fragment exists of Piece X, Aften med Dans (Evening with Dancing), but the conclusion is missing. The manuscript is to be found at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen (RLS 83,2). On the first page,Langgaard has merely written 'Piano Pieces 1916': the real title and titles of the movements in the first two pieces derives from other sources. In 2008, the Rued Langgaard Society asked the Danish composer Niels Marthinsen (b. 1963) to add to the work, the aim being to create a 'performance version'. Marthinsen composed a complete new first piece - Paa rejse (Travelling) - and allowed it to merge with the preserved concluding fragment of Langgaard's second piece, Mode (Meeting). Niels Marthinsen further composed a conclusion to the incomplete Piece X, Aften med Dans (Evening with Dancing), and in it incorporated a reference to the first piece, so that his additions came to form a frame round what hasbeen preserved of Langgaard's work. This supplemented version was given its first performance by Berit Johansen Tange in 2008. The overall title and titles of the individual pieces refer to a summer stay in 1913, i.e. three years before the work was composed, when the then 20-year-old composed was on holiday in Kyrkhult in Blekinge (Sweden).
