Together, Bach's Notebooks provide a fascinating glimpse into the domestic music academy of the Bach family home. This first Urtext edition Notebook for Bach's son Johann Christian has been reconstructed by renowned Bach scholar Christoph Wolff from copies from the estate of C.P.E. Bach. It includes pieces for keyboard by J.S. Bach, Johann Christian's initial attempts at composition (minuets and polonaises), and pieces by the older brothers Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christoph Friedrich and son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol. The collection is completed by two sets of short preludes and fughettas from Bach's early Leipzig teaching practice, which may have come from other lost notebooks for his family, possibly the one for C.P.E. Bach.

Jon Lord’s Sarabande was composed during 1975 and released as a solo album the following year. This new revised edition of the composer’s 2010 concert version represents the first appearance of the work in print in anyform. Lord intended it for his own use in live performance, as a companion to his celebrated Concerto for Group and Orchestra. It is a brilliant showpiece for the combined forces of rock band and orchestra, takinginspiration from the keyboard suites of J.S. Bach. This new full score is edited by Jon Lord’s long-time musical collaborator, the conductor Paul Mann, and makes use of many previously unavailable sources including themanuscriptscores of the original version and a copy of the score corrected in consultation with the composer following the 2010 premiere. It can therefore be said to represent as closely as possible Jon Lord’s final thoughts onthe work.

The most well-known piano version, by Myra Hess, is a literal transcription from the cantata, which not only presents several awkward and difficult technical challenges, but can easily sound dry and technical on the modern piano. Hall’s first arrangement in D-flat major is refreshingly different and original and less difficult to play than Hess’ version, making it more accessible to pianists by using more idiomatic fingerings and employing all five black keys.
