Jazz Chords On Piano -2 by Tormod Vinsand (2017). This book is a follow-up on Jazz Chords on Piano (WH32971) and it is definitely an advantage if you have familiarised yourself with the techniques and terms used in Jazz Chords on Piano . There are many ways in which to play jazz on a piano. In Jazz Chords on Piano I describe some guidelines for how to prepare accompaniment and melody playing, but admittedly, there are of course many other ways to play or other techniques to use. In Jazz Chords on Piano - 2 I have chosen to focus on four typical techniques: Part 1 - Playing Arpeggio in left hand Part 2 - 4-stacked chords in a piano movement Part 3 - Left-hand chords Part 4 -Overlying triads when accompanying To illustrate the various techniques, I have made compositions that are stylistically adjusted so that the various techniques make musical sense and are playable. Since 1988 Tormod has been a jazz piano lecturer at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory, Copenhagen, The Institute of Musicology at University of Copenhagen, and the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen. In 1735 Bach published the Italian Concerto, presented here in a revised separate edition, together with the French Overture in the second part of his “Clavier Übung”. The two works were intended to respectively exemplify the Italian and French styles. Thus, the “Concerto” unmistakably imitates an Italian solo concerto, using only the means of the harpsichord. Tutti and solo passages can be heard as well as the dynamic gradations of the sound layers, which Bach explicitly marked with piano and forte. Energetic outer movements frame an Andante, in which a melancholy cantilena unfolds over unadorned chords. For the revision of this Bach classic, editor Ullrich Scheideler also evaluated, in addition to the prints, early manuscript copies which allowed interesting conclusions about the lost autograph.

Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the “work of an old man”. The composer’s variations on the theme “La folia” (taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano. He once drily said to a friend, “All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the theme”. Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing “la folia” – i.e. the “madness”? Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas 6â??8 are often referred to as â??war sonatasâ?, since they were composed in Russia during World War II during times of great hardship. The b-minor Sonata is part of a group of six piano sonatas which, according to Haydn's own handwritten catalogue of works, was composed in 1776. The autograph has not survived, and the first edition of 1778 was not authorised. However, numerous copyist's manuscripts have survived in which Haydn had his six sonatas disseminated. The separate Urtext edition from the volumes containing Haydn's complete piano sonatas presents this transmission, which is quite typical for the composer, in a way that is optimally comprehensible for every Haydn enthusiast. The musical text, edited according to all the rules of the art on the basis of the Haydn Complete Edition, is supplemented by ergonomic fingerings by Stephen Hough – and thus offers the ideal conditions to discover this treasure among Haydn's sonatas.

The toccata genre has undergone great change since Bach’s time. Originally denoting works of recitative or improvisatory character, since the 19th century the emphasis has been on a continuous pulsating rhythm. In Prokofiev’s masterpiece, composed in 1912, this rhythm grows into a hammering motoric drive that dispenses with developed themes or motifs. That which seems fascinating and enthralling to us today came as a shock to the critics of that time. But there were also proponents such as Prokofiev's friend Nikolai Myaskovsky, who wrote of the Toccata: “It is a fiendishly clever thing, edgy, energetic and full of personality”. Besides the printed editions that appeared during Prokofiev's lifetime we also had the autograph at our disposal for this Urtext edition. Yulianna Avdeeva, a master of virtuoso piano music, has been responsible for the fingerings.

Volume I of Liszt's Années de pèlerinage, entitled Suisse, is based on impressions he gathered during an extended sojourn in Switzerland in 1835/36. The most important piece of the collection, first published in 1841, is undoubtedly Vallée d�Obermann, which offers a vast richness of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic variations on the basis of two contrasting themes. The technically and artistically demanding composition owes its title not to a scenic valley in Switzerland, but to the epistolary novel of the same name by French poet Étienne de Senancour. Set in Switzerland, it presents an emotionally torn hero who articulates his weltschmerz in a dialogue with nature. The musical text of this separate edition of Vallée d�Obermann is preceded by an excerpt from Senancour's novel, which may provide impulses that are just as important for the interpretation as are Francesco Piemontesi's fingerings.

The Fifth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, emerged from several earlier versions. The double character indicated in the sobriquet “Héroïde élégiaque” is based on the two contrary themes: a “heroic” theme in minor and an “elegiac” theme in major, seasoned with characteristics of Liszt's “style hongrois” such as augmented seconds and sharp dotted rhythms. Thanks to the slow tempo, No. 5 is one of Liszt's less difficult rhapsodies and thus offers a wonderful introduction to these musical reminiscences of his Hungarian homeland. Involved in this Henle Urtext edition, which also takes the autograph into account for the first time, were two eminent Liszt specialists: Mária Eckhardt provided the preface, Vincenzo Maltempo the fingerings.
