Although often regarded as quintessentially English in style Elgar???s music is undeniably deeply rooted in the German Romantic tradition. Elgar???s gift for the creation of melody often sequential and frequently including one of his most familiar ???fingerprints??? ??? the falling seventh ??? might well be the most obvious attraction in his music. But underpinning those melodies is a sophisticated harmonic vocabulary which often reveals that wider Germanic influence especially in moments of drama.It is hoped that this set of piano duet arrangements suitable for intermediate-level players and beyond will continue to bring new performers to these Elgar favourites whether they are simply playing for their own enjoyment or preparing for concert performance and that they will find much to reward their efforts.

Salut d'amour op. 12 for Piano-Edward Elgar?s Salut D?Amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts the work became anenormous success early on. Notes in the surviving autographs for the versions for Violin and Piano (HN 1188) Violoncello and Piano (HN 1189) and Piano solo show that Elgar had intended making arrangements for numerousscorings but only the three named versions were authorised through original manuscripts.Amongst these the Piano version has a special significance: Caroline Alice Roberts was a Piano pupil of Elgar?s and thus thecomposer might have rewritten the original for Violin and Piano for his fiancée and later wife. Alongside the first print we have also evaluated Elgar?s autograph engraver?s copy for the first time.

Elgar's Serenade In E Minor Op.20 arranged for the solo Piano by Malcolm Kenzie. A beautiful pastorale work initially premiered in 1896 and characteristic of Elgar's poignant melodic writing. The piece was always a favourite of the composer with both a wistful charm and a genuinely 'English' eloquence. An ideal choice of solo piece that will forever warm the hearts of any concert audience.

Elgar wrote this Allegro his only major piano work at the request of the pianist Fanny Davies for a recital by her in December 1901. Elgar later took back the manuscript for revision and made the piece more concise by eliminating some repetitious passages. It appears in print for the first time in the composer's final revised version for piano solo. The duration of the work is approximately 11 minutes.

On November 6th 1929 at the Small Queen's Hall London Edward Elgar recorded five short improvisations at the piano. He used the piano extensively when composing and the recordings present a fascinating insight into the composer's genius referencing his work on the never-completed piano concerto and other themes in five remarkably cohesive and memorable pieces.Although these recordings were eventually released in 1975 there has not until now been a printed transcription of this music available. In this edition Iain Farrington has skilfully transcribed Elgar's playing to reconstruct the five pieces making a significant addition to the Elgar pianorepertoire.
