Written in tribute to all mothers, but especially the composer's mother Florilyn, who died at the age of 90 in 2008, each of the four movements in this grade 3 suite may be performed independently of the others with excellent results. Movement 1 is a plaintive waltz with lush romantic harmonies. Movement 2 is a comedic interpolation featuring portions of two etudes by Muzio Clementi and the tick-tick sound of the typewriter. Conflict, reconciliation, resolution, and acceptance is the conveyed essence of movement 3. And with a reverent duet introduction, the final movement of Elégie à nos mères commemorates the end of Florilyn's long life. Arranged for saxophone quartet (SATBar).

The Pavane for a Dead Princess is considered to be one of Ravel's most popular works. The solemn and stately court dance strutting along in an even pulse turns into a melancholic, yet not sombre dirge. The arrangement on hand is in line with the orchestral version written by Ravel himself in 1910 and constitutes part of the series Ravel for Saxophone Quartet including publications of, among others, Ma Mère L'Oye (Mother Goose), Trois Chansons (Three Songs), and Le Tombeau de Couperin.

For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his mother's death and the death of many of his friends who lost their lives in World War I. Hence, the suite he finished that same year can be considered as an elegy. Due to its classical, sonatina-like character, this piece does not radiate an atmosphere of mourning, but rather a light, cool serenity. This arrangement for SATB saxophone quartet is faithful to the original orchestral version. Titles: I. Prélude * II. Forlane * III * Menuet * IV. Rigaudon.

Originally conceived as a piano duet in 1908 and later arranged for orchestra in 1911, this popular set was inspired by the 17th-century fairy tales penned by Charles Perrault and Marie Catherine Aulnoy. Some of the compositions are preceded by excerpts from the corresponding fairy tales.

There is more light in this room when you are here is a fervently optimistic mood piece embodying the core themes of my song cycle The Lustful Mother. The title refers to another person - maybe a lover, child or friend - whose existence makes life more meaningful. In the first movement, the music wanders through the twilight, and the solitary recitation of the tenor sax is framed by answering sighs from the soprano and alto. In the second movement, the full quartet joins in the same hopeful song, that, endlessly swaying and discreetly circling, fills the whole space with its light. The work was commissioned by the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, to which it is dedicated.
