Historical information about Händel's Water Music Suites is limited, but certainly these works were intended for two, possibly three, parties given by King George I on the Thames River, London, between 1715 and 1736. Händel and his orchestra played on a barge. Since then the some twenty-two separate original pieces have been organized into three Suites and nicknamed 'Water Music?, each having a separate key and likely corresponding to these river parties. This transcription of Water Music Suite II for saxophone quartet has two purposes: to make this music available to saxophonists for performance and education, and to provide in one volume the entire Suite II. The exception to the latter, because of the limits of endurance, is the exclusion of the short Adagio, a brief interlude between the fi rst two movements. Included though are the Allegro, Hornpipe, Minuet, Lentement, and Bourree. These works were originally meant for an outdoor performance, and one of the original intentions of the saxophone was to play in French military bands, also an open-air purpose. The original scoring of brass, woodwind, and string instruments (but no continuo) transcribe well for saxophones. Matching the ranges of instruments of the original to the saxophone quartet was a primary objective. In addition, this arrangement strives to disperse melodic material to all four saxophones so as to make the arrangement pleasing to all the members of the quartet while providing variety to an audience. Any dynamic, articulation, and tempo markings are to be taken only as suggestions so as to allow interpretation by the performers. The musical study and performance of all styles while using examples of composition and performance that represent excellence is necessary for saxophonists who wish to be well-rounded musicians. For the above reasons saxophonists are urged to listen to recordings of the original orchestration in order to learn and imitate proper interpretation of Baroque style. There are currently a number of excellent recordings of Handel's Suites on period instruments, such as (but not limited to) those by conductors John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, and the ensemble Tafelmusik. Three Jazz Settings. Par RICKER RAMON. This suite was inspired most notably by the saxophone quartets of Phil Woods and was written in a conscious attempt to wed certain stylistic elements of classical and jazz music. The players are not asked to improvise, but the piece does featuresections that sound spontaneous and freely created. The piece is difficult, but no more so than other quartets, like Glazunov and Desenclos, that are standard repertoire for this instrumentation. Talented high school and all college groups will findsuccess working on this piece. The first movement, subtitled Danse Macabre, is ominous, dark, sometimes bluesy and is propelled along by the use of intricate counterpoint and an improvised sounding solo section for the tenor saxophone. Par PIAZZOLLA ASTOR. Transcription pour 4 saxophones de Claude Voirpy. Bordel 1900: Le tango naît à Buenos-Aires en 1882. Les premiers instruments à le jouer sont la guitare et la flûte. Par la suite, s'y ajoutent le piano puis le bandonéon. C'est une musique pleine de grâce et de vivacité: elle donne l'image de la bonne humeur, de la faconde des Françaises, des Italiennes et des Espagnoles qui vivent dans ces bordels, aguichant policiers, voleurs, marins et mauvais garçons qui leur rendent visite. Le tango est gai. Café 1930: C'est une autre époque du tango. On cesse de le danser comme en 1900 et l'on se contente désormais de l'écouter - il devient plus musical, plus romantique aussi. C'est une transformation radicale: mouvement plus lent, harmonies nouvelles, beaucoup de mélancolie. Les orchestres de tango se composent de deux violons, deux bandonéons, un piano et une basse. On chante parfois. Night-club 1960: Cette période pendant laquelle s'accroissent considérablement les échanges internationaux, voit une évolution nouvelle: le Brésil et l'Argentine se retrouvent à Buenos-Aires. Bossa nova et nouveau tango, 'même combat'. Le public accourt dans les night-clubs pour y écouter avec sérieux le nouveau tango. Révolution, profond bouleversement de certaines formes du vieux tango. Concert d'aujourd'hui: La musique de tango rejoint, par certains concepts, la musique nouvelle. Réminiscences de Bartok, Stravinsky et quelques autres sur fond de tango.
