Noels (the French spelling) are old but enduring carols that often tell a ballad-like story. Nowells (English spelling) are likely derived from and developed by English wandering minstrels. Both carols and nowells are often in 3/4 meter, lending themselveswell to dance. The First Nowell is one of a few carols that survived a ban on Christmas by the English Parliament in 1645. The tune is one of the oldest ballad carols, perhaps dating back to 1500, and likely originating in England. This arrangement of The First Nowell has multiple settings of the 3/4 time melody. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material throughout the ensemble. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

Mozart's Finale from Sonata No. 11, KV 331, also known as Rondo alla Turca, is one of his most recognized works. This tuneful, lively work was composed in the late 1770s, and since then has been transcribed for many ensembles. Two objectives were in mind while transcribing the Rondo alla Turca. One was to produce a relatively clean manuscript with a minimum of articulation and dynamic markings so as to allow interpretation by the performers. Such markings found here are provided only as suggestions. Secondly, rather than featuring just the solo soprano saxophone, the melodies were given to other parts as well.

Andante and Scherzo by Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) is a very enjoyable quartet for saxophones composed in 1938. Dedicated to the Paris quartet, this romantic piece is divided in two parts: it starts as a slow section, with a tenor solo followed by the chorus and it then jumps into an engaging quick staccato. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.

Tortuga is an island in the Caribbean. During the 17th century it was a venerable headquarters and hideout for pirates. As we like to say, crime doesn't pay, so surely these pirates (at least some of them) met grisly ends. Take pirate karma into account as well as Tortuga's close proximity to the fabled Bermuda Triangle and you are bound to find a curse or two! Curse of Tortuga is a fast-paced and fun piece inspired by the Pirates of Tortuga and their clearly assumed curse- bad guys never win!

Since music of the high Renaissance often featured voices in four-part harmony, it adapts very well to performance by modern saxophone quartets. This suite begins with In Te, Domine, Speravi, followed by the poignant Triste Espana Sin Ventura. A lively Spanish dance concludes this excellent set.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is an American traditional carol by an anonymous composer. St. Nicholas is associated with a priest serving in Asia Minor who was consecrated as Archbishop in Myra, then was made a patron Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church. Legend has it that he was generous and kind to children and practiced gift giving in secrecy at night. This charming, gentle tune blends well with Pachelbel's Canon in D, and performers are urged not to take a beginning tempo too fast that would rush the coming eighth notes. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar), rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment, strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

‘Bella Ciao’ originated as an Italian folk song, stemming all the way from the late 19th century. Many versions have since appeared over the years, but the song now has a new lease of life owing to a new dance adaption as well as its feature as the theme for the Netflix series ‘La Casa de Papel’, which has inspired Bert van Haagen to create this dynamic arrangement for quartet. Jahrhundert. Three works with quotations from well-known composers are contained in this tongue-in-cheek collection. Otto M. Schwarz has produced an outstanding recording of these works with members of the Slovak Philharmonic, which is available on all streaming and download platforms. 1. THE AMADEUS WATCH: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's own watch - if he had one - ticks away. The ticking carries us back in time with a piece that stylistically imitates the music of the 18th century in melody, harmony and rhythm. 2. COMPOSERS DINNER IN HEAVEN: At the music publisher De Haske, a composers' dinner was an integral part of trade fairs or meetings. The dinner was very popular among anyone who sat at it, not least of all because it offered one the opportunity to chat informally. Based on such a meeting, Otto M. Schwarz has composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR WOOD QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continuous eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts, and following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.

Up-tempo even eighth piece. The melody is very angular (kind of Dolphy-ish), and the harmonies are unusual, since they are not based on traditional chord voicings. This chart sounds best played fast with a funky, gritty, earthy quality, but can work well even at a medium tempo.
