The Little Quartet for Four Horns op. 185 by Erkki Melartin was commissioned by the progenitor of Finnish horn playing, Holger Fransman (1909-1997). The Helsinki Music Institute's horn class received this three movement quartet from their principal for the spring concert in May 1936. A composition for four French horns was a rarity in 1930s Finland. The quartet was performed for decades as Holger Fransman's arrangement. This edition is based on the original version of the composer.

James Pugh has written a short work of chamber music in one movement called Short Scherz, Quintet for Saxophone Quartet and Trombone. This music is appropriate for very advanced performers and is about 2 1/2 minutes in length. The work begins with a bouncy melody (A Theme) that works it's way up through the instruments, comes to a climax and continues on into a languid melodic section (B Theme) and works its way by adding speed and dynamics to the conclusion (A Theme repeated). This work was written for and first performed in 1989 by George Marge and the American Saxophone Quartet with Mr. Pugh.

Featuring four distinct movements in contrasting styles---Grave * Allegro * Adagio * Spirituoso---this adaptation of an 18th century masterwork gives everyone equal responsibility for presenting technically challenging passages and produces antiphonal effects when they play in opposing pairs. Detailed historic notes are included.
