With its tonal language of subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven's two masses opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary work to the Missa solemnis, it is an entirely independent work which set standards for the further development of settings of the Mass in the 19th century. Its newness, of which the composer himself was fully aware (I do not speak gladly of my Mass, or of myself, but I do believe that I have treated the text in a manner in which only few have treated it.), paves a way to an hitherto unknown, contemporary avenue to faith which today is still current. Carus presents this important work of church music history in a new critical edition by the Beethoven expert Ernst Herttrich. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4068800.

The primary source on which the new Carus Urtext edition is based is the first edition of the score from 1800. Contrary to normal custom, Haydn published the score himself in order to avoid unauthorized publications and to present an optimally designed edition from an authentic hand. With this original document, which has been compared with additional relevant sources, Carus now offers a musical text based on the latest musicological findings. The critical report provides all of the important data concerning the edition in a compact form suitable for practical use [practical performance]. A detailed foreword offers insight into the genesis of the work, its construction and reception and illuminates compositional and theological and spiritual-historical aspects. In addition to the score, with singing texts in two languages (G. van Swieten's original German and English text), in the interest of legibility, vocal and choral scores will be offered in two separate editions (German or English). This work is now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5199000.

In this occasionally unusual, expressive work, Cherubini sensitively follows the drama of the psalm texts, on which the work is based. In concert the work is suitable as an impressive pendant to the masses and requiem settings of Cherubini, Haydn, or Mozart, and also in combination with the great sacred works of the 19th century. Several elements contribute to the Christmas character of this mass, which is distinguished by the fine skillfulness of its composition: structural means, such as motives in triads, the symbol of gently rocking, traditional themes and a fitting instrumentation with trumpets and flutes. Because of its catchy, easiliy graspable quality this Messa Pastorale, published here in a first edition, is highly suited for liturgical use. C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. After Johann Adolf Hasse had ended his career as a composer for the opera stage and finally settled down in Venice, he wrote a number of sacred works. Since he had long been obligated to the Saxon Court, where he served as a composer for three decades until 1763, these works were originally intended for the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. The solemn-pathetic Missa in G minor (1783), with the inserted movement Ad te levavi, is Hasse's final work: a crowning conclusion to an oeuvre whose significance in music history has only recently begun to be recognized and has now received the fitting acknowledgement it deserves. While the solos in earlier masses form an integral part of the structure of the entire work, Christian Bach made the solo sections independent in the sense of the Neopolitan school. The orchestra is occupied with longer preludes and rustling figures. In the eleven movements, Bach was able to unite the compositional techniques and expressivity of the Baroque with the beautiful sound of an Italian cantilena. From the forward by Traugott Fedtke. The Carus program featuring music of the Court of Dresden has been expanded with the publication of the first edition of the great masses of Johann David Heinichen, who, next to Hasse and Zelenka, was the most important musical representative of this capital of Saxony. A peculiarity of this work is the fact that Heinichen inserted an actual concerto movement for solo flute, 2 oboes, strings and continuo between the Gloria and Credo, which recommends the Mass for concert performances. The oratorio Passions by Homilius were among the last compositions of their kind in the 18th century. In an oratorio Passion the chorus is restricted mainly to singing the chorales and the interjections of the crowd; only the conclusion of a Passion provides an opportunity for an extensive choral movement. In the St. John Passion the final chorus emphasizes the supreme importance of the Crucifixion as the climax of St. John's Gospel. The free elements of the composition take the forms customary at the time: da capo arias are predominant. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710300.

He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3710400.

The cantata cycle Die Tageszeiten, which was composed in Hamburg in 1757, is one of the outstanding late works of Georg Philipp Telemann. A Symphonie and four cantatas (each of which consists of an aria, accompagnato, aria, and chorus) portray, in a richly sensitive manner, the course of a day, beginning with the awakening of nature to the sunset. The poetry of Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariae and Telemann's music herald the beauty of nature, as well as the greatness of God revealed within it. Colorful instrumentation and pictures in sound corresponding to each time of the day, delicate compositional structure, and an ingenious realization of the text characterize this work, whose musical idiom is at times reminiscent of Haydn. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. Franz Suppe wrote his Requiem not as a humanistic or pantheistic lament for the dead, but as a work created on the basis of firm Christian and Catholic faith. The fact that Suppe succeeded in writing a Requiem which remains within the theological-liturgical bounds without sacrificing the values of an autonomous work of art is perhaps the greatest - although hitherto unrecognized- achievement of this work. After the Passions-Cantate ,,Ein Lammlein geht und tragt die Schuld of 1775, the Christmas Oratorio is the second major vocal work by Homilius to appear in print during his lifetime. With an unusually large instrumental contingent, Homilius set the, at that time, much beloved pastoral theme of the shepherds in a most sophisticated manner. Each movement presents a clearly differentiated, atmospheric scene, distinct from all the other movements. This applies to the varied pastoral music, as well as to the representation of the mighty God by an angel, whose entrance is accompanied by trumpets and timpani. Garcia, born in 1767 in Rio de Janeiro, and priest and music director at the cathedral there, is still hardly known. Among his spiritual works are four settings of the Mass for the Dead. The present ,,Missa dos Defunktos was commissioned by the Portuguese King Dom Joao VI in the memory of Queen Maria I, who died in 1816. The composition, in the key of D minor, shows parallels in several places to Mozart's Requiem, which Garcia performed two years later (1819) for the first time in Brasil. Uns ist ein Kind geboren is one of Telemann's most beautiful Christmas cantatas, which features an opening duet for two sopranos based on Polish-Moravian folklore, as well as two substantial choral movements. The two horns allotted to the second choral movement to the text Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe can be replaced by two flutes. This is supported by a source from the Telemann tradition in Frankfurt, in which these parts are present. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3911500.

With the edition of the Christmas Oratorio within the framework of the Stuttgart Bach Editions, Carus presents a scholarly edition for practical performance. The basis for this publication are Bach's autograph score and the original parts. The conducting score contains an appendix with a concise Critical Report which provides information about the sources and their readings; when necessary, the latter are discussed in more detail, especially with regard to how the editor arrived at solutions for questions of articulation which differ from those found in previous editions. The representative, clothbound volume is supplemented by a study score as well as a choral score, a vocal score and complete orchestral material. In the orchestral material short excerpts containing the conclusions of the secco recitatives are rendered with cue notes in separate vocal systems printed above the score where the instrumentalists pause, thus enabling them make their entrances in the movements which follow these recitatives. This work is also available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124800.

Telemann's cantata Now thank we all our God cannot be assigned to any of the composer's known annual cycles of cantatas. The given designation, Tempore Messis, which appears in the title in the sole surviving source, suggests it was composed on the occasion of a harvest thanksgiving festival, but the general nature of the text means that other occasions for performance such as New Year, Reformation Day, church or organ consecrations and weddings are conceivable. Musically, the work is distinguished by two spirited choral movements reinforced by trumpets which frame a duet for tenor and bass and an aria for alto and transverse flute. An unknown work from the so-called Buckeburger Bach, which at first was ascribed unjustly to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The story of the Suffering of the Lord is examined from a different perspective. Pilgrims have undertaken a journey to the Holy Land and when they arrive they are informed by a hermit of the suffering and death of Christ. An additional figure, an angel, lends this representation of the Passion a heightened form for communicating the importance of the suffering of Christ.. Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Composed in 1727 for a eulogy and funeral oration for Electress Christiane Eberhardine in the Leipzig University church, the music for the funeral ode is well-known today above all through reconstructions of Bach's St Mark Passion, in which large parts of this cantata were probably re-used, but of which only the text survives. With the funeral ode we have one of Bach's strongest and most fascinating vocal compositions. Although Gottsched's text is associated with a particular occasion, it is distinguished in its literary quality from many secular cantatas and it is entirely appropriate to perform this impressive cantata in concerts.
