The cantata Nur jedem das Seine (Do justice to all men) BWV 163, for the last Sunday of the Church Year 1714/15, belongs among to those chamber music works which Bach composed for the Weimar Schlosskirche. The instruments are limited to strings, although two obbligato violoncellos are included which together with the solo bass singer and the continuo form a bass quartet unique in Bach's works. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello. Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. The Carus program featuring music of the Court of Dresden has been expanded with the publication of the first edition of the great masses of Johann David Heinichen, who, next to Hasse and Zelenka, was the most important musical representative of this capital of Saxony. A peculiarity of this work is the fact that Heinichen inserted an actual concerto movement for solo flute, 2 oboes, strings and continuo between the Gloria and Credo, which recommends the Mass for concert performances. Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Garcia, born in 1767 in Rio de Janeiro, and priest and music director at the cathedral there, is still hardly known. Among his spiritual works are four settings of the Mass for the Dead. The present ,,Missa dos Defunktos was commissioned by the Portuguese King Dom Joao VI in the memory of Queen Maria I, who died in 1816. The composition, in the key of D minor, shows parallels in several places to Mozart's Requiem, which Garcia performed two years later (1819) for the first time in Brasil. The text is concerned with suffering and the Antichrist, both of which are overcome by Christian faith. By employing all four ranges in solo capacities Bach creates the greatest possible variety.
