(+)
Giuseppe Verdi's Quattro Pezzi Sacri for SATB and Piano. The single works forming the sacred music cycle 'Quattro pezzi sacri' were composed as independent pieces between 1889 and 1897. The scoring ranges from solo voices a cappella to double choir with large orchestra. In 1898 the year of their first joint performance Verdi had them published together as 'Quattro pezzi sacri'. With the composition of the 'Quattro pezzi sacri' in the last years of his life Verdi thus returned to his church musician origins. Already at the age of 10 Verdi performed the duties of organist in his home congregation and later in Busseto where he received his first music lessons. Themasses at the collegiate church in Busseto formed some of his most important musical impressions. During the time Verdi composed 'Falstaff' his last opera he was once again composing sacred music this time in a conscious encounter with historical models such as Palestrina and Bach.

The ?Petite Messe Solennelle? is the finest work of Rossini?s late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet-Will for the consecration of her private chapel where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the ?Stabat mater? the mass is one of the composer?s most important sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two Pianos and Harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan Keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini?s day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositionsas written by for example Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later Orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements. The Piano reduction by Andreas Köhs is extremely idiomatic and largely preserves the charming character of the unusual instrumentation.- Based on the Urtext of the series ?Works of Gioachino Rossini?.- Foreword in two languages (Eng/Ger).- With a separate Harmonium part and one part for Pianos I and II.

(+)
The ?Gloria? RV 589 is one of Vivaldi?s most popular compositions today and one of the most regularly performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque era. The work was in all probability composed around 1716 during Vivaldi?s time at the Ospedale della Piet an orphanage for girls in Venice.Although Vivaldi?s ?Gloria? (BA 8953) was written for solo voices and mixed choir it is likely that it was performed at the girls? orphanage with female voices only. Taking this into account Malcolm Bruno?s careful arrangement for choir SSAA is of some relevance. The work when set for female voices or children?s choir remains a true masterpiece. The?Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8954)for two choirs and two string ensembles as arranged here for female choir displays its own charm. It can be performed together with the Gloria as a type of short mass. Both arrangements are based on the recently published Urtext editions of these works. The piano reductions by editor Malcolm Bruno are easy to play and preserve the character of the works.- Effective arrangements for female choir- Forewords in English and German- Straightforward idiomatic piano reductions- Kyrie and Gloria can be combined for performanceThe orchestral parts for the original SATB version can be used for the performance of these arrangements.

(+)
The material for Mozart’s azione sacra is taken from the Old Testament book of Judith the story of the beautiful Israelite who steals into the enemy camp of the Assyrians and decapitates their sleeping commander Holofernes.Often called a stroke of genius by the fifteen-year-old Mozart Betulia Liberata brooks comparison with his early operas in every respect. But Mozart was evidently concerned to distinguish between an azione sacra and an azione teatrale in the music itself e.g. in the accompanied recitatives and the sacred aura of the final chorus. Performance material available for hire.First vocal scoreof Mozart’s Betulia Liberata.Easy to play Piano reduction.Clear and uncluttered appearance on the page.Original Italian words underlaid with a new German translation.Bilingual preface in German and English.

The Mass In C Major was completed and premiered in 1807 and has been unjustly described as a preliminary step towards the great Missa solemnis. Yet it is a self-contained and for its time distinctly modernpiece of sacred music.Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper has drawn on a rich body of sources to suggests practical solutions to the work’s musical and interpretative problems. His in-depth study of the sources convinced him to include a fully realised Organ part in the score just as Beethoven envisioned it for the first printed edition. As stated in the original sources the parts for the soloists and choir are notated on joint staves to demonstrate that the soloists are also to sing the choral passages. This Barenreiter Urtext edition is rounded off with a foreword on the work’s genesis and a detailed critical commentary.

Apart from the many available recordings it is frequently performed in its entirety or in parts. The Urtext edition of this well-known work has unusual origins. It originated from a graduate seminar at the University of North Texas under thedirection of the Monteverdi specialist Hendrik Schulze. The result is an edition which combines the latest in musicological research specifically with the needs of the performer in mind. This has led for instance to a divergent evaluation of the ?Lauda Jerusalem? oriented towards performance practice with numerous additional accidentals and a new interpretation of the melodic variants from the different part books. These new musical and performance practice insights make a modern interpretation of this 400-year-old work possible.Full score & performance material available for sale.

No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach?s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprisingconsidering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work or at least re-work an existing one for every Sunday and festival of the church year as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately not all cantatas have survived. However over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi?s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period.Vivaldi wrote the ?Gloria? as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Piet around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ?Gloria? Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solopassages. The same mastery has also been applied to the ? Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The Piano reductions are straightforward clearly presented and preserve the character of the works.- Attractive choral pieces which can be combined to form a short mass.- Vocal score as well as choral score available for the ?Gloria?.- Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).

Joseph Martin Kraus [1756–1792] composed his Requiem in 1775at the age of 19 for the parish church in his hometown of Buchen Odenwald. This followed the Miserere of 1773 and is the second of his surviving sacred compositions. Already in this early work Kraus shows that he was a representative of the musical “Sturm und Drang.” With all its youthful unconcern towards compositional technique this music displays his seriousness and strength of expression together with a dark instrumental timbre as well as an abruptness or at times brusqueness. The publication of the Requiem in the Complete Edition is the first historical and critical edition of the work

Basso Continuo-Claudio Monteverdi?s Vespro Della Beata Vergine is without doubt one of the most popular sacred works of the 17th century. Apart from the many available recordings it is frequently performed in its entirety or in parts. The Urtext edition of this well-known work has unusual origins. It originated from a graduate seminar at the University of North Texas under the direction of the Monteverdi specialist Hendrik Schulze. The result is an edition which combines the latest in musicological research specifically with the needs of the performer in mind. This has led for instance to a divergent evaluation of the ?Lauda Jerusalem?oriented towards performance practice with numerous additional accidentals and a new interpretation of the melodic variants from the different part books. These new musical and performance practice insights make a modern interpretation of this 400-year-old work possible.- Scholarly-critical Urtext edition orientated towards performance practice- Detailed critical commentary (English) in the full score- Movements 10 13 and 14 are included in their original high clef in the appendix of the full score.- These movements are also available with Piano reduction as copy on request.

No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach’s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprising considering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work or at least re-work an existing one for every Sunday and festival of thechurch year as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately not all cantatas have survived. However over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then.

The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. (+)
?The Glagolitic Mass? one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge. This new critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes (B/5-I BA 6862 und B/5-II BA 6863): the ?September 1927? version which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928. This second version was then revised further and published after Janacek?s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the ?final authorised version? it has been newly edited for thispublication which is based on the engraver?s copy of the score prepared by Janacek?s regular copyist Václav Sedlacek. The new Barenreiter edition also contains an informative preface (Cz/Eng/Ger/Fr/Ru) as well as detailed critical commentary. The ?September 1927? version can be seen more as a supplement and appears without text commentary.

Among Verdi’s many compositions as a work of sacred music the Requiem remains unique. It was composed as a musical memorial for the Italian national poet Allessandro Manzoni deeply admired by Verdi and was first performed on the first anniversary of his death on 22 May 1874 in Milan Cathedral. The exploration of many extremes places Verdi’s tonal language with musical means wholly in the service of a dramatized liturgy. The edition is based on the autograph as the primary source and makes accessible one of the most important requiem settings of the 19th century in a modern scholarly edition. In addition to the musical text the score contains a detailed foreword in threelanguages a critical report with information on the source situation the edition and the various readings. The complete performance material will be available for sale.

D-Dur-The Gloria in D Major RV 589 is Vivaldi's most famous sacred work and it is among his most important church music compositions. An independent work in one movement it was probably composed between 1713 and 1717 for the Ospedale della Pietà one of the orphanages of Venice in which young girls received a thorough musical training. The musically representative work is divided into 12 sections which differ in scoring movement type key and expressed emotions.

(+)
Oratorio in three acts-Saul was given its first performance under Handel’s direction at the Haymarket Theatre London on 16 January 1739. The original libretto (dated 1738) refers to the work as “an Oratorio or Sacred Drama”. This libretto was written by Charles Jennens (1700–1770) a wealthy amateur writer from Gopsall Leicestershire. A letter of 28 July 1735 from Handel to Jennens suggests that a complete raft of the text already existed at that time. Saul occupies an extraordinarily important position in the English oratorio tradition that Handel brought to perfection standing alongside Israel in Egypt at the end of the first creative period of such works.- Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition - Full score (BA4020) & vocal score (BA402090) available for sale - Performance material (BA402072) available for hire
