Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis also known as By the rivers of Babylon was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions â?? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano â?? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources.Saint-Saëns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This fourth movement of the larger work is inspired by the extraordinary story of Irena Sendler née Krzyżanowska, a Polish nurse and head of Å»egota, the Polish Council to Aid Jews in the Second World War, whose personal interventions saved the lives of approximately 2,500 Jewish children in the Warsaw Ghetto, smuggling them to safety, acts of humanitarian bravery that eventually caused her arrest and torture by the Gestapo. She is honoured as Righteous Amongst the Nations at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem. The Latin texts of this movement are taken from the Book of Lamentations (“My eye hath run down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. My enemies have chased me and caught me like a bird, without cause…â€) and from Psalm 142, the Old Testament being the meeting-point of Sendler’s Catholicism and the Jewish tradition of those whose lives she saved. Mozart and Haydn greatly admired the church music of their friend, the composer and Vienna court Kapellmeister Joseph Eybler. With its lyrical-pastoral mood, his Missa Sancti Alberti contrasts with his large-scale mass settings; in structure, extent, and orchestration it recalls Franz Schubert's well-known Mass in G major. Apart from two solo quartets which can be performed by soloists from the choir) the chorus is the main carrier of the musical action; the concise setting of the mass text is mainly set homophonically. Starting with a basic string group, the orchestra can be expanded ad libitum by the addition of two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, and timpani, enabling the work to be presented in its masterly orchestration.
