With the unfinished revision (1739) as an appendix. The St. John Passion ranks among the great vocal works from Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach's direction in 1749. At the same time, with the aid of the appendix it is possible to perform the work in the traditional mixed version.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124500.

The technical demands made on the vocal soloists (and also on the instrumentalists) are no greater in the soli than in the tutti sections. Therefore there ist no need for highly accomplished solo singers; members of the choir can take the solo parts. This Mass can also be performed accompanied only by an organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4063300.

The second movement of the cantata Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille BWV 120 became particularly well-known through its re-use in the Credo of the Mass in B minor. The cantata is one of six surviving cantatas for inaugurations of the Leipzig Town Council from the pen of Johann Sebastian Bach. Although the autograph manuscript score can be dated to around 1742, it is not known precisely which town council inauguration the work was performed at. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3112000.

Among Haydn's over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most Mozartian of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn's most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg church trio includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of Missa solemnis. The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history of the origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5454600.

Just by reason of its scoring the Missa Sancti Hieronymi occupies a special place not only among the settings of the Mass by Haydn, but also in the repertoire of church music at the Royal Court of Salzburg. Other than the Hieronymus Mass and the Proprium motet Timete Dominum MH 256, which is connected with it, there are no additional surviving works in the Salzburg repertoire with this type of instrumentation. The unusual instrumentation, the contrapuntal style in the fugal sections, as well as the melodic invention and harmonic elaboration show that this Mass is a masterpiece. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5425400.

Johann Michael Haydn worked for over 40 years at the Court of the Prince Bishop in Salzburg, in whose employment he composed most of his music. However, the Missa sub titulo Sancti Francisci Seraphici was composed in 1803 on commission from the Viennese Imperial Court, on the occasion of the name day of Emperor Franz I. Two years previously, his wife Empress Marie Theresia had already commissioned a large Mass with a gradual, an offertory and a Te Deum on the occasion of her own name day (Missa sub titulo Sanctae Theresiae, 50.328). Both Masses are impressive because of their size and their unusually large instrumental forces. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5032900.

In spring 1816 Franz Schubert, just nineteen years old, completed his second setting of the Stabat Mater in the midst of a highly productive period. In contrast with his first setting written the previous year, just five minutes in length, this time Schubert used the German translation by Klopstock as the basis for his composition. Stefan Schuck's edition is the first one of this work to be based on a critical evaluation of the primary sources, with complete performance material. The work, in a dark F minor, with its text by Klopstock, places Jesus Christ, rather than Mary, at the center of the contemplation. With his fugues, but particularly in the eight-part lamenting chorus Wer wird Zahren sanften Mitleids, Schubert shows himself at the height of his creative output. He composed his 4th Symphony, the Tragic, at almost the same time. The Stabat Mater is a rewarding work for choral societies and choirs to perform, because the choir has the largest portion to sing, and the choral parts are not too demanding. The composition is also a beautiful introduction to the choral-symphonic music of Schubert for less experienced choirs. Score available separately - see item CA.7006500.

Bach composed BWV 135 as the fourth cantata in the second annual cycle of Leipzig cantatas. The hymn Ach Herr, mich armen Sunder was written in the 16th century to the tune of Herzlich tut mich verlangen. The unidentified Leipzig librettist of the 2nd cycle of chorale cantatas made free use of this hymn as the basis of an exemplary cantata text. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3113500.
